"never given a chance players"

I remember seeing Barry Hayles play for us in a pre-season friendly at Boston United.

In their team was none other than Gazzer!

On both counts, I remember saying "oh, my goodness".......or something along those lines.

I went down to Cornwall pre-season that year, and went and saw the Blades at Tavistock, and Barry Hayles looked garbage down there, Ian Ross skied a penalty and the moment of the match was Tony Daley coming on the pitch as a player, coming on the pitch, skinning his man, cutting inside and firing a shot straight in to the top corner. It was a moment of class, and had a few people wondering if he could still be a player for us. The same night we had Noel Whelan playing the first half, and he spent the second half in the bar with a fag and pint.

The pre-season tours of Cornwall, whilst being criticised by many, used to be a good week long piss up.

Fathi - the best midfielder in the African Cup of Nations.

And of course there was the genius that was T. Dellas - regular at Roma in serie A, Euro 2004 gold medallist with Greece, voted onto the all - star team for that tournament. But.........never really trusted at the Lane, oozed class and skill but didn't have the Monty engine/ work ethic ( plus he found it a bit cold in these parts)

Dellas was more useful playing in a formation that has a sweeper system

Except of course that he wasn't a regular at Roma - see from this thread especially here, Tri only played 44 matches in three seasons.

Didn't think Dellas was that good at the lane.

Lee Morris - went on to be pants. £3M!

Curtis Woodhouse - I threatened to throw my season ticket when I heard a rumour we were thinking of selling him to Rangers for £4M. No, really.

Both given a chance with us so don't really fit, but worthy of a mention.

He was out of his depth at 2nd tier level.

The evidence doesn't support this conclusion about Beckett. In his only decent period of playing time in the 2nd tier, he was top scorer for a dreadful Stockport team.

Warnock started him in 1 game and he had fleeting sub apperances in 4 games before he gave up on him. we then sent him out on loan where he scored freely at Huddersfield and Oldham (saving the latter from relegation). Meanwhile, we had to put Chris Morgan up front against Millwall and missed the playoffs because we stopped scoring goals. Shocking management.

Beckett may not have cut it at that level, but there is no way of knowing, because he was never given a chance to find out.

So far... Jacob Mellis.

Languishing in the Chelsea reserves until sent to Southampton in August, where he's made a grand total of 7 league starts and according to his Wiki...

Mellis is currently on probabtion after an altercation in a Nottingham club with a young woman.

Do you have the text of the response he gave to the blade who asked him for an interview on facebook?

He did sound like a jumped up twat then, so the fact that he's had a brush with the law doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

What about Nicky Law? Started a few games in the Premier League for us and did well.

Imre Varadi and Simon Stainrod, purely on the basis that the highlight of both careers after leaving Bramall Lane, was a spell at the Swinery! Can a career go any further downhill than that?

So.....

Now we have a thread about players who, when we sold them, there was a degree of uproar on the lines that they were "never given a chance", but whose subsequent career shows them to be less than the world beaters some people thought.

I'll start with Simon Francis and Christian Nade.

I was thinking the other day how Messers Howard & Hendrie are getting on? Do Clough & Rodgers not play to their strengths either?

Quotes from hobnobanyone about Brian Howard:

Brian Howard could be one of the worse centre midfielders we've ever had.

i really dont like Brian Howard - pie boy number 2

...Brian 'carrying a bit of Christmas weight' Howard in the middle then it really is no surprise why we are struggling second half of games

what is our managers obsession with Brian Howard?

And an interesting thread HERE

Must be the ball going over his head again  ;)
