Just thought how similar Norwich’s goals were against Chelski and us.

In the cup game it wasn’t a corner but a cross that came in from the left and their left back was at the near post and flicked it over the keeper and in at the back post.

Against us the corner was from the right and their right back came in at the near post and flicked it past Simon and in at the back post.

Our best headed attempt recently was also similar, Big Magic Don against Wendy, but Wildsmith tipped it over.

As our corners in general haven’t produced much, although we scrambled one yesterday, maybe a few late runs from a smaller guy from deep to or around the near post corner of the 6 yard box may yield a bit more?

Basset's team used a great corner ploy and pinged it to between the goal and 6 yd box line at head height.
Can't remember who but someone was detailed to get there and deflect the ball towards the area between the pen spot and 6 yd line where we would have a few lined up to attack that area.
This gave defenders very little time to react and change position and we scored a lot of goals from these.
We also used same approach with long throws if my memory serves...

John Gannon to Paul Beesley if memory serves me right?

The guy was totally unmarked, someone didn't do their homework or their job.

For near-post corners to work they need to be hit with power - so far this season we don't seem to have anyone who can hit them hard enough. A bullet near-post corner , deflected slightly by our first man , can cause havoc.
Whereas floaters , in the box or in the bog , are just embarrassing.

The Norwich goal was a good goal but made easier as there was no challenge to their player. However I do wonder how many times their player would score from that position. He has to glance the ball with back to goal and really has little control where it goes. Not only does he have to get it on target but it needs to beat the keeper. One in twenty chance?

I was thinking the same thing when I watched it. Not often you see that sort of headers go in and I expect he was aiming to flick it on rather than score.

If it doesn’t go in the keeper can palm it out, it can hit the bar and rebound or it can go beyond the far post, all of which can lead to second ball goals. At worst the keeper palms it over and you get another go.

There’s no reason whatsoever to not put a player on each post, schoolboy defensively from us.
