Will be out for a while.

United's worst fears about Gary Naysmith's injury have been realised and the defender has already been under the surgeon's knife.

He clocked up 37 Championship starts this season before breaking down at Turf Moor but has ended up sharing his bad luck story with ex Blades, Phil Jagielka.

"We hoped that there was no serious damage to his knee but Gary has undergone surgery on his cruciate ligament and will be out for six or seven months," said Kevin Blackwell.

"It is extremely disappointing because he has been such a solid player for us all season and to lose him at this absolutely crucial stage is desperately bad luck for him and the Club."

The Scottish International will miss the crucial closing stages of the Blades promotion bid, just as Phil Jagielka has suffered knee damage that prevents him from appearing in his first FA Cup Final with Everton.

By sheer chance, the United boss explains, the pair have been thrown together:

"Gary has his operation in hospital in London and 'Jags' was the next one in! They were virtually in adjoining beds and will travel back up north together on Friday."

Gutted. I thought Naysmith had been one of our better performers this season. Very consistent and steady. Hope he gets back soon.

Bad news indeed.

I hope we go up and Naysmith gets the credit he deserves for his steady performances.

Now I must ask, what is your take on Naysmith since joining the Blades? I remember him being a cracking defender at Hearts a few years back (

, he gets the second for Hearts in this 3-2 win at Celtic) and was sad to seem him go to Everton.

Now however the only exposure we've had to him up here is when he's in the Scotland squad and although he puts in a solid shift he's prone to making some defensive howlers (miss-kicked clearances being a speciality!).

So, what are your thoughts (out of curiosity more than anything).

Still, it's sad to see him injured.

When we first got him i was unsure. Under robson, IMO he was under average, his fitness was poor, his tactical positioning was crap amonst things.

Under blackwell he gained a better fitness and looked a different player. Although nothing fantastic he does a good solid job and sometimes overlooked for his performance. He's good at sticking the boot in but at time its shut your eyes and hope for the best!

i think steady is the word.....sometimes he's great most of the time he,s ordinary.... but hope he gets well soon:)

I'm guessing if you get promoted he's probably not going to figure in the plans for next season?

I'm already hoping that it's not going to be long before he's dropped from the Scotland setup (perhaps paving the way for another good left back, Lee Wallace).

I wasn,t convinced at first either - though he's has some tough acts to follow like Armstrong, Geary and all the way back to Wayne Quinn. Have to say he's grown on me - solid in defence though we don't see much of him up front (apparently to allow Naughton to get forward). Think he's good enough to be given a go EVEN IF (not tempting fate!!) we go up. Folk didn't think Geary was prem quality, but he turned out to be a star - really pissed Ronaldo off :D

Don't think anyone was convinced to start with, but we are talking about the abject failure which was Sornob's reign. He's still caught out of position a bit too much for my liking, but all in all I think he's been very good this year.
