Well another disappointing result today. I shall await a report for the post mortem.

However it does show United are again right in the shit and that just staying up is about the realistic ambition right now.

A look at the current table shows we're just one point above the relegation zone and of the teams down the bottom we've got the fourth worst goal difference (and a crap goals scored too).

Interesting it supports the quite reasonable assertion put on Sunday that United threw away a chance to stuff Tranmere (in contrast to Notts County today who thumped Bradford and who incidentally are also in the clart).

Whilst I do expect United to survive, by being dragged back after a great run, shows how slim the margins are and it is easy to think we'll scrape clear by a big margin.

There is still a long way to go but I hope we don't fall into the trap we did in the Prem, when we thought we were well clear only to be let down by a lack of goals (away from home) and Mr Scudamore and his cronies. It is also interesting that he is a Bristol City fan.

We must find a permutation that gets us some goals otherwise it's gonna be one roller coaster of a season.

dont agree we look upwards one lousy penalty decision should not deflect us from trying , Wednesday lost at Walsall going up on both occasions, so it shouldnt put us off

Only narrow margin that concerns me at the moment is the one point margin between us and the bottom four, a draw today would have been a good holiday period, but today's defeat and the failure to beat Oldham on Boxing Day means it was below par.

I don't think Mr Scudamore gets to decide who stays up every year...... ;-)

What exactly are you insinuating? Promotion is far from the current picture.

I'm still quite perplexed by some comments suggesting we're safe and certain not to go down. After the Gillingham game I thought we were going to end up getting relegated, I've still not changed my mind. Take a look at the teams around us and the results against them. We lost Gillingham, Shrewsbury and Carlisle and failed to beat Oldham, Colchester and Crawley at home. The Tranmere game was the only game this season that I've felt we've won comfortably.

Who knows what's going to happen? We might purchase an amazing striker on top form this month. OR, we could sign an old, decrepit striker who can't hit a barn door (like Miller for example). OR, injuries to key players could occur, didn't Baxter and McGinn exit the game today with suspected ankle injuries and are likely to miss out at Villa?

The way it's going for WHU this year he will need to get his thinking cap on to keep them in the PL again!

I can remember Walsall beating Arsenal once too. Look at them now!

It only took Mickey Adams one month to ensure we went down in 2011.

February 2011: played 7, drew 2 lost 5, scored 4 goals. Giving us no chance of recovery.

A maestro at work

Unrealistic ambitions, aren't they lovely. Before Cloughie arrived who would have realistically expected a result away at Walsall? Get real Blades. Never agreed with the idea that we may just get in the play-offs and I don't agree with the idea that we're still in the mix for relegation either. Today was a set back (and there will be many on the way) but hardly a disaster requiring a wringing of hands. Anyway Happy New Year everyone ,2014 will not be as bad a year as 2013, trust me ;)

Apart from the opening 15 minutes, was a really poor performance today, after that no threat of scoring whatsoever. McMahon, Coady and McGinn were probably the poorest out of a really bad bunch! the game was crying out for someone like Brandy to be introduced but he only got given 7 minutes at the end.

The Tranmere game was the only game this season that I've felt we've won comfortably.

CREWE game was won comfortably, we just decided to stop playing 20 minutes early, but yeah, we rarely win games with ease.

We rarely win games full stop.

The 1-1 draw v Crawley was a comfortable victory? Christ, no wonder we're close to relegation.

so we lost a game , I expect us to lose 4 maybe 5 more doesnt by any way mean we cant still sneak 6th , weve played all the hard away games now, weve despite what some think still got one of the better squads in this division , was just fucked up for the first dozen games by Weir, and now hes gone we are only just getting beat by a dodgy pen at one of the play off contenders

After reading some posts on here I can't seem to get a quote out if my head:

In the words of Dads Army Lance Corporal Jack Jones "Don't Panic Mr Mainwaring"

At least not yet anyway ;)

no under blackwell we had 40 points from 34 games in 18th when he took over , we can piss that total and we only missed out on a play off spot on the last day

we only need 5 wins in 10 to match that total
and that was against championship teams

we have played all the top 12 away
66 points at stake 74 secures a play off 4 in 5 seasons

But why are you bringing Wednesday into it?

Are fans being critical of Clough living in the real world here?

Clough took over a team in a shit league position, with a squad of shit players getting shit results and no transfer window to remedy the situation. Did anyone realistically expect us to instantly start turning limp defeats into convincing victories overnight?

I think the problem is (still) fan expectation. Instead of accepting the reality of our situation we still romance with the idea of promotion and cite Bournemouth and Crystal Palace as examples we should follow whilst blissfully ignoring that there are also the likes of Bradford City who probably, at around the same point where we're at now, thought they were too good for L2.

For anyone who thinks we aren't progressing simply look at the points per game rate for Clough then compare that to Weir, I just hope it'll be enough to keep us up.

I think Cluff has done a very good job so far. He has arrested the slide and got the players facing the right direction.

But the team is at the limit of their individual and collective ability. They cannot beat teams a few seasons ago we would have shat in the pockets of. In fact, they can't stop these teams - Walsall for fuck's sake - capitalising on our shitness to take three points off us.

No one can change that except our exciting new co-owner.

So, over to you, eh?

I don't think anyone is criticising Clough. I know I am defintately not. I think today just highlights what we all know and that this team is not up for the fight and how much work is still to be done here.

How can a team that played so well in the 1st half just not come out in the 2nd. Not only that, give no resistance. These guys should be fighting for their careers right now and are just not up for it. In nearly every game we concede we vary rarely win and have not won a game where we have gone behind. When a team has equalised against us, only once in the league have we come back to win

So where do these players think their career is going to if they can't even cut it at the bottom of the 3rd division. Nobody is excluded from this from the players I like to the players I don't. They should be all in this together.

Give them a pass for today because they have lost only 2 in 10 games (including cup). Not at fucking chance, technically we are not that bad yet the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz had more heart than this lot put together.

Most deluded post in internet history. Please tell me you're a Pig on a wind up because that kind of ridiculous blind........, can't call it optimism so I'll have to settle for stupidity is cringeworthy. How the fucking hell can you talk about play offs when we have 4 points from 3 winnable games against shite opposition? When we draw more than we win, and when we aren't very good no matter how brainwashed you are to come on here bragging us up as a potential play off team is madness.

I swear that no one would be happier than me if we suddenly became even half decent, but to still be talking about us as a potential play off team simply makes you look ridiculous.

I think you're being extremely downbeat here. We've just lost 1 in 9 and are picking up points we definitely wouldn't have under David Weir. If we kick on again and lose only 1 in the next 9, I'm sure we'll be nearer the top half than the relegation zone.

Whilst the Play Offs are an unrealistic aim, 9th / 10th is very much achievable. We will not get relegated from this division. No chance.

I think a lot of people are being disrespectful to Walsall. They have won 10 games and are 1pt behind 6th placed Rotherham.

I seem to remember people slagging off our 2-0 defeat to Brentford last Novemeber saying similar things "losing to shit opposition" etc.

Who's to say Walsall won't be favourites for the title next year?
