I would have put this in one of the existing threads but this forum is taking a bit of getting used to due to multiple threads that sort of skirt around the same subjects. Not knocking it at all just taking some getting used to.

Anyway I thought today was a much welcomed improvement. I think the main breath of fresh air was the fact that we actually had some sort of composure at the back. That Edgar bloke looks nice and steady and just what the doctor ordered, the lad won pretty much everything in the air and he threw himself in the way of everything the opposition threw at us. Can't ask for anything more really. I think with Edgar in there the confidence levels within the back four were much improved and long may it last. I'm not going to sit here and say that the defence are terrific and that they will take some beating because they are still far from perfect and need to be a bit tighter and they need to get out a bit quicker. Loads of work to do back there but a big step in the right direction after last weeks serving of tripe.

Sammon! I wasn't sure about him if I am honest but today I think we saw a good idea of what he is all about. He should have had his first goal today, I didn't see enough of it but from what I did see it looked good enough to me. I was impressed with Sammon today anyway, I think his work rate and desire were superb in both ends of the pitch. He had a bit about him and he was always looking to chase down and get on the end of things. I put my hands up, I didn't know what to expect of him but I think he looks a great signing and I think he will pitch in with a few goals.

I know it's early days but I still see a trait in this team that reminds me of last year and I want us to hurry up and get out of the habit. I always feel that this team have a tendency to become content and complacent and this frustrates me. I want to see this team really take the bull by the Horns. Ok we had a two goal lead but we weren't runaway winners, in fact I though Chesterfield were pretty equal for large parts of the game. The opposition were a threat but equally I think the manner in which Chesterfield brought the game to us to try and get something out of it left them very open at the back at times. We didn't seem to bothered about this, I think a good few of them saw it as "Oh we are 2 nil up, let's shut up shop and go home". We have done this a good few times of late and it has cost us points, we need to kick on and really take the game by the scruff of the neck.

This sort of links with the paragraph above but our central Midfielders? What has happened to Baxter and Scougall? I remember both of these players in their early days at the club and both had a real desire to get forward and attack the edge of the box. We used to win a few free kicks from it bare minimum. I am all for composure in Midfield but these two cause the opposition nightmares when they go forward and join in the attack, both are composed and skillful enough to do it.

Is it wrong in the wake of the Murphy sale that I am shit scared of Adams performing too well prior to this window closing? The heads are already turning and I am sure the lad is gathering a bit of interest. We need to keep this lad, what an asset he will be this season. I asked what others thought of him playing in midfield and received mixed opinions. I am now certain that he can play at Midfield and still bag us a good few goals. Just hope his head and heart is still at United and that the board do everything they can to safeguard this lads future at the club.

Early days and very glad with the win however I do think we rode our luck at times and a huge improvement is required if we are to kick on and take this league by the scruff of the neck.

Great post

Agree with a lot of that TGM..Edgar looked quality, must have won every header, got blocks in and decent on the floor..Collo played well alongside aswell, and I thought Howard did ok in Goal.
The 2 lads up front did well...Sammon especially...he might not be a prolific goalscorer but holds the ball well and links the play...not sure why his goal was disallowed..Sharp worked hard and nearly got a deserved goal.
Che scored 2 quality goals and was involved in the build up to both with some quality play as was Sammon.
I don't know why we are sitting so deep..I did here NA say in pre season interview about defending deep,so maybe it's deliberate..Looks like .Baxter is charged with getting the ball off the defenders and then setting up the play from there..he drops deep and then tries to move it as quickly as possible to get us up the pitch, but the big problem is we didn't retain the ball well Bash,Baxter,Che,Scougs,Freeman all guilty of giving the ball away at different times.
Thought we deserved the win though..Chesterfield had a lot of possesion, but hardly did anything with it..plenty of crosses coming in but we defended them well, which was good to see..We created the better chances..Che nearly got a Hattrick,Sammon(disallowed)Sharp,Scougs,Woolford all had good chances aswell.
Still work In Progress, but good to get the 3 points and plenty of positives..UTB!

Much better but room for improvement.

With Howard and Edgar coming in in, our defence looked much stronger. 14 corners conceded is a concern but last week 10 of those would've been converted into goals.

There were also in swinging crosses and shots that were bouncing in front of Howard that he was gathering up. They would've flashed into the net last week. Howard also punched numerous crosses out of the area and generally commanded his area well. For me confidence in your GK gives your defenders more confidence overall. If Howard had played last week, we wouldn't have conceeded 4 goals, no chance.

Adams looked good on the left. Not sure if he will burn himself out if played there every week, he's still young, but what a fantastic player we have there. His composure is that of a seasoned pro. That brings me on to Sharp - totally different player to the one we had before. His all round game has improved. He can hold it up, get in behind defenders and can pop off a shot with little thinking time. The bloke behind me must have been watching some 2008 highlights on his phone as his view was "he's dun nowt him, still crap".

Sammon looks to be the player we wanted Higdon to be. He could form a fantastic partnership with Sharp if they are given time, I'm sure they will be.

I wouldn't have minded seeing JCR on for Scougs in the second half. For me Scougall needs to play central, however, he's not going to be a first choice CM anymore. I think over the season we will see a few short lived cameos from him.

I enjoyed it yesterday. New seats. Great view. Far from the finished article but much better than last week. Roll on Tuesday.

Adkins addressed this in his post match interview. He wasn't happy that we didn't control the game although he was pleased with the win and the clean sheet.

I'm sure it's something he'll be working on with the lads and the fact the majority of the squad were cloughs signings it's probably more of a mindset they're stuck in.

Always good to read the opinions of those who went to the match and saw us play.
