I would have put this in one of the existing threads but this forum is taking a bit of getting used to due to multiple threads that sort of skirt around the same subjects. Not knocking it at all just taking some getting used to.
Anyway I thought today was a much welcomed improvement. I think the main breath of fresh air was the fact that we actually had some sort of composure at the back. That Edgar bloke looks nice and steady and just what the doctor ordered, the lad won pretty much everything in the air and he threw himself in the way of everything the opposition threw at us. Can't ask for anything more really. I think with Edgar in there the confidence levels within the back four were much improved and long may it last. I'm not going to sit here and say that the defence are terrific and that they will take some beating because they are still far from perfect and need to be a bit tighter and they need to get out a bit quicker. Loads of work to do back there but a big step in the right direction after last weeks serving of tripe.
Sammon! I wasn't sure about him if I am honest but today I think we saw a good idea of what he is all about. He should have had his first goal today, I didn't see enough of it but from what I did see it looked good enough to me. I was impressed with Sammon today anyway, I think his work rate and desire were superb in both ends of the pitch. He had a bit about him and he was always looking to chase down and get on the end of things. I put my hands up, I didn't know what to expect of him but I think he looks a great signing and I think he will pitch in with a few goals.
I know it's early days but I still see a trait in this team that reminds me of last year and I want us to hurry up and get out of the habit. I always feel that this team have a tendency to become content and complacent and this frustrates me. I want to see this team really take the bull by the Horns. Ok we had a two goal lead but we weren't runaway winners, in fact I though Chesterfield were pretty equal for large parts of the game. The opposition were a threat but equally I think the manner in which Chesterfield brought the game to us to try and get something out of it left them very open at the back at times. We didn't seem to bothered about this, I think a good few of them saw it as "Oh we are 2 nil up, let's shut up shop and go home". We have done this a good few times of late and it has cost us points, we need to kick on and really take the game by the scruff of the neck.
This sort of links with the paragraph above but our central Midfielders? What has happened to Baxter and Scougall? I remember both of these players in their early days at the club and both had a real desire to get forward and attack the edge of the box. We used to win a few free kicks from it bare minimum. I am all for composure in Midfield but these two cause the opposition nightmares when they go forward and join in the attack, both are composed and skillful enough to do it.
Is it wrong in the wake of the Murphy sale that I am shit scared of Adams performing too well prior to this window closing? The heads are already turning and I am sure the lad is gathering a bit of interest. We need to keep this lad, what an asset he will be this season. I asked what others thought of him playing in midfield and received mixed opinions. I am now certain that he can play at Midfield and still bag us a good few goals. Just hope his head and heart is still at United and that the board do everything they can to safeguard this lads future at the club.
Early days and very glad with the win however I do think we rode our luck at times and a huge improvement is required if we are to kick on and take this league by the scruff of the neck.
