remember that game with city at the lane when marsh broke tom mcallisters leg horrific challenge went right over the top of the ball cowards challenge 🤨

Since 1979

1Kelly
2Tracey
3Henderson - would be higher but only based on 2 seasons
4Kenny
5 Moore - but not with any great enthusiasm.

Hopefully Ramsdale takes over the lot of them

Honorable mentions for Keith Waugh & Mel Rees

1. Hodgy (just coming to the end of his career when I started watching)
2. Alan Kelly
3. Hendo
4. McAlister
5. Tracey

Close, but no cigar: Jim Brown
Kenny was alright, but a bit prone to daft errors of judgment.

In my time of watching the Blades (1975 onwards), I'd go:-

1) Tracey
2) Kelly
3) Kenny
4) Henderson (perhaps could be the best of the lot, but only two seasons at the Lane and never ours)
5) Budgie

Watched live for me is

1, Kelly
2, Tracey
3,Deano
4, Kenny
5, Alan Fettis (3 games 2 clean sheets. Stats to die for)
Alan Fettis one of the best goalkeepers York City have ever had, I watched him pull off some great saves and keep York in a number of games they had no right to stay in. He was far too good for that level, he should have played no lower than Championship throughout his entire career.

He’s been a coach at Man U academy for a few years, not sure how much he had to do with Henderson coming through the ranks but he’s really respected as a coach now. Just like Ian Rush though, career peaked at lane 😅

Budgie was one of my favourites, he always had a good connection with the crowd especially at away games. I remember an interview with him where his main advice to become a top goalie was to live with the ball, ie take it everywhere with you 24hr a day. The ball then becomes part of you, he said.
I think he slept with the ball for many a year, much to the annoyance of his missus.
Tom McAllister was always my favourite as a kid and was definitely heading for the top with some club.

Mel Rees was fantastic in the short time we saw him so I’ll put him top
Tracey
Hendo
Kelly
Paddy

1. Tracey
2. Rees
3. Kelly
4. Kenny
5. Budgie

Not included Hendo and may push 5 if he was ours.

John Burridge was the one I watched and Paul Thomlinson was emerging. Hans Segers was also very decent when Bassett came in, who would have known?🤦‍♂️

It gets difficult when you aren't old enough to remember the really God ones.

I think Kelly, Tracey and Henderson would be in my top three though special mention to Mel Rees who's time was far too short.

However Ramsdale could be in a position to usurp all three given his age.

Hated that dirty snidey bastard ever since
Could hear the crack from where I was on the kop and toms scream of agony
Never forget or forgive that
Making me rage even thinking about it

1/ Hodgy his only downside was his lack of height which he more than made up for by positioning but he could never come and catch a high ball in the box it was always a punch away. Don't forget though he was a top goalkeeping coach right up to his retirement some of the best keepers learnt their trade from Hodgy.
2/ Alan Kelly although prone to the odd mistake he gained us more points than he cost us and some of his saves were just breath taking.
3/ Tom McAllister career cut short by injury he would have been better than Henderson if that is the benchmark some of you want to use.
4/ Tracey a solid dependable keeper most of the time
5/ Paddy Kenny as above solid most of the time

One or two more deserve a mention notably Mel Rees in their short spells with us. No mention for Henderson still too many mistakes in his game and he plays to the camera too much for my liking he will be a top keeper though. Ramsdale I don't think he will be that far behind Henderson but he will get more game time than a bloke sat on the bench at Man Utd so who knows.

Judged by the few games he played for us, no one is better than Mel Rees. Unless you were there to see it, it's hard to believe/explain that a keeper came from nowhere and was basically world class for a handful of games for us.

Kelly's performance v. Wednesday at Wembley takes some matching as well.
As did Mel Rees' lap of honour that day, fair crack to the pig fans giving him a standing ovation too.

Got to find a spot for Paddy Kenny, think i would put him at 3, and swop Kelly and Tracey round in spots 4 and 5.

Alan Hodgkinson,exceptional keeper.
Kenny was excellent for us, never gets the plaudits though. Why? I think the ones I've seen like ST & AK & MR were better but he was bloody reliable, Much as I love ST, he made a lot of bad errors too.

1. Tracey
2. Kelly
3. Henderson
4. Kenny
5. Rees/Ramsdale

Rees, if he’d carried on as he was, would have been top three, easy.

Ramsdale will also be challenging to push out Henderson if he carries on as per the last few months of last season. Can’t put him any higher based on one season though, especially as a third of it was sloppy at best.

Never heard of mcallister, what year was that?

My top 5
Henderson
Ramsdale
Kenny
Bennett
Blackman

I know its all opinions, and I'm guessing your a youngish blade, but Bennett and Blackman?? I'd have jags ahead of both

Just the keepers in my time. We really don't have many to choose from considering the ones who missed out of my list were, Simmonsen, long, bunn, Moore and verrips.
On bennet though the games I saw I remember thinking he was nearly as good as paddy although it was early days of me watching. I have no pre paddy years.

1.Kelly
2. Rees (sadly only played a few games but he was unbelievable)
3. Kenny
4. Henderson
5. Tracey

A bit too soon to decide if Ramsdale is in their class.

1. Kelly
2. Tracey
3. Rees
4. Hendo
5. Ramsdale

Amazing that we had my top 3 at the same time! Incredible really. Mel Rees's performance at Everton is still the finest goalkeeping display I've ever seen. It really was something else and feel privileged to have seen it. Neville Southall clapped every save while we sang "Wales, Wales number 1" (Southall was Wales number 1 and must have been worried for his place after that display).
