A rare event for me being in the city off my birth and a match on to boot. So, armed with a ticket and couple of buddies we fuelled up in the Cremorne (where I was approached by a Blade with reference to last years SUTV offers) and moseyed down to BDTBL and up on the BLUT, after being shifted from gate to gate for no reason than bad planning and shit organisation.

What a gorgeous experience it is being inside that stadium. It firmly ranks as a marker of absolute favourite places in the world. Earlier I'd dropped a PA speaker off at Real Electronics and went to visit my parents grave at Hutcliffe Wood so with this boxes ticked watching us batter Wigan was a bit of light relief.

First half we looked terrific across the park, despite kicking up toward the kop unusually. Our formation, a nicely modified 3-4-2-2 suited our abilities and although Wigan tended to exploit our left flank with George on his wrong foot we managed them and created chances from open play and set pieces alike. We do however tend to spread it wide too much but battled well to dispossess and get back on the front foot. Our goal came from such endeavour and also came from a channel run at their defence squared to the other channel in NDaiye.

We also created some great chances which were either smacked into the kop or were well blocked or saved by their players. This continued into the second half, however there was a glorious twenty minutes from about 55 to 75 where we pressed and harried and got at them, unfortunately to no avail. Wigan looked a bit shell shocked and the Hecky pulled McAtee off who had worried Wigan all afternoon and stuck Norwood on, pushing the already overworked Doyle to the tip of the midfield and with Norwood on we seemed to lose all our Mojo somewhat. This improved when the knackered Doyle was hooked for Fleck who added some bite to our midfield and was dead unlucky not to win a penalty. Second half we huffed a puffed somewhat and passed it about a lot and settled for safe game management which saw us win the deserved three points and make our claim more secure

Foderingham 6/10: Not a massive amount to do. One decent flick over from a header and some scary moments with backpasses and pressing attackers
Bogle 5/10: Pretty anonymous to be honest. Got up the pitch but was characteristically wanting when we were under pressure
Anel 6.5/10: Some decent forays forward from what was an extended RWB billet. Safe and tidy in defence
Egan 6.5/10: Found it tough getting in front of their forward pair to intercept the balls pumped up the pitch but otherwise pretty solid
Robinson 6/10: Also got forward well but seemed fragile at times
Baldock 6/10: Exposed as Wigan concentrated their switch play in his area, and was found mixing it up with the ref more than he was with their players at times
Doyle 8/10: Great game. Was everywhere. Sweeping through the midfield, front post to intercept corners, muscling their winger and providing the anchor our team needed. Knackered when he went off. We're gonna need him on Monday
Berge 7.5/10: Shocker. Today he showed so much more of what we need. Got stuck in, ran at their backline, shot for goal and challenged headers. Very good.
NDaiye 8/10: Dangerous all over the park. They shat blood when he gained possession and looked a full league above everyone on the park. Well worked goal from the inside channels
McAtee 7/10: Another good game from him. He's becoming a very similar comparator to MGW filling those inside left channels and running at them
Sharp 6/10: Showing both age and pedigree with todays performance and damned unlucky not to score with his header and other half chances

Norwood 5/10: We seemed to deflate with him on the pitch and he looked out of place and made some poor judgements
McBurnie 6.5/10: I thought he tried well to get involved today especially in the late stages
Fleck 7/10: Much improved small cameo from JF. As said, should have earned us a penalty

Ref: 3/10: Shite

HJ&SMcC 7/10: Went at them, first half. Earned the goal but we spent a lot of wasted time passing it across the face of the box retaining possession instead of getting the ball and player in the box. Some decent shots and chances on goal but our lack of finishing the game off nearly cost us

Always a pleasure your reports, never a chore!

Good to see you managed to get a chance to take in a return to the Taj Mahal of football.

When I read the bit that said “Earlier I'd dropped a PA speaker off at Real Electronic” I did wonder if this was a euphemism. Maybe it was!

At the risk of being a negative ninny, the sight of Norwood and Fleck on the pitch at the same time, and their respective outputs, does make me wonder why I've just paid £90 to go to watch us get dry bummed by Citeh...

Doyle really has evolved into our most important player hasn't he!

Hopefully Dozy et al have most of our PL lined up to dump at Man City's door for his services!

Did what he had to do & got the result yesterday , no classic but no complaints either . MOTM for was joint effort for Illy & Berge today , that latter really upped his game yesterday .
Thought Wigan were a well organised team not offering s lot up top but with a bit more luck we could had a couple more .
A mention for both keepers who both made 2 outstanding saves more so for Wes as he was redundant for the other 89 minutes .
Had a great day out in the sun yesterday , topped off by watching Burnley sink Boro in the Genting ⚔️

Good assessment,Pommpey.Totally agree.
Told you, you’d appreciate Berge more, when you get that panoramic view, a live game gives you.Good isn’t he?
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, in `God’s own city.

Hopefully Bogle will find his form again for the crucial next few weeks. Would love it if City would agree to sell us Doyle and loan us Mcatee again IF we go.up.

Good review shippers always enjoy reading them

I think the first thing you mention about Berge “got stuck in” was really noticeable right from the start. He seemed to do his defensive work with far more urgency. He’s gone from not even attempting a single tackle against Norwich to making the most tackles in this game. Was really pleasing to see.

Cheers for the report.

Hope you're enjoying your visit to the Steel City of Dreams. The Blades didn't let you down.
