I too thought the worst when I saw our line up but our tactics were bang on in the first half. Those big lumps in Millwall's defence don't like running backwards and hate having to turn. The forward runs of Anel and Sander Berge had them terrified and even Fleck and Norwood looked competent up to the point when Norwood stroked a poor spot kick that most keepers would save without diving 10mins before the ball was kicked like the Millwall keeper. It should have been game over by half time.
Second half Millwall do what Millwall do not pretty but they get balls in the box but we defended well, Clark looks much more comfortable on the left side against their bruisers not sure he will do so well against the pace of a cavalry charge but the set piece battle seemed to suit him. Thought Jebbo wasn't too bad, I'd have given him a 5.

The thing with Norwood is that he never hides
Whatever his form he will always keep trying to make things happen
Whatever the outcome this is a quality I greatly admire
I admire it too

Been a great player

But he was rubbish today sorry to say

Ndiaye has a remarkable football brain for one so young (to go with his other qualities).
We have a truly make or break season on our hands.
If we can keep Ndiaye & Berge , not only do we have a chance of promotion , we actually must achieve it.
If not , those two will be gone and you know what'll happen then.

'Cunteyed Tossers'? Have some respect, Pommps. Deano and Gagey were excellent servants to our club, and they continue to show a lot of affection and have a great bond with the club, despite not being from our city.

To be honest I was addressing those incompetent pricks who can't run a fucking media studio and balance the sound.

I'd never address Brian Deane as a cunteyed tosser. Firstly because I am scared of him and secondly because he isn't one.

Some players putting in good performances undermines some fans self-opinionated ultra egos.

How does that work, Dr Peterson?

Hoping/praying and constantly sniping and insisting they move on to justify their "expert" analyses does provide a form of alt-entertainment I suppose!

Sliding into a thread to criticise the commentators and not comment on the match at all shows you to be a bit of a chopper, to be honest lovey. How's about you play the game like most on here for once, eh? Those that dislike me and 'My take ... ' ignore the fuck out of it. They're happy, so am I. Those on here disagree but offer why. It's called debate and it's what is done on a forum board, see?

Fucking 'egos'. I've shit 'em.

N'Daiye is always positive, forward looking and seeking out opportunities. On the ball he is dangerous, near goal threatening and when dispossessed or withing sight of tackling he is tenacious. Great player.

Trouble is he only has sixty minutes in his tank.

True but with 5 subs his 60 mins will do me for now coz he's a joy to watch.
And maybe if we foster the belief that's all he can ever manage , it might dissuade some of the suitors.

Ndiaye found a spark with MGW last season and the fire is still burning. One of the best things this season could be similar connection with one of the new faces we have brought in (not played much yet).

Fodders - 7 did what he needed too well, one really good punch under pressure second half.

Baldock - 6 furious puts in a shift, great defensively but blimey, give him the ball in space, in behind and his only go to is 'close my eyes and hit a cross hard as I can'

Anel - 9 superb, like Bash but better. That slide tackle/block on Bennett was class.

Egan - 8 much better today, made a great block with his nut.

Clarke - 7.5 again much improved, just one crazy clearance when under no pressure that nearly let them in.

RND - 5.5 not awful but kept getting skinned by their right winger and was caught out of position a couple of times. Still not convinced.

Norwood - 5 I'm a fan but a very meh performance, Norwood plays shit and we still win fairly comfortably makes a refreshing change though.

Fleck - 7 ran out of steam but lovely vision and pass for the 2nd.

Berge - 8.5 Rolls Royce isn't he?

N'Diaye - 8 lots of skill, clever play and a great finish. Just needs to last 90. Cramp again, does he need to learn to conserve energy at times?

Brewster - 6.5 Good outing, worked tirelessly and did well for the pen. Still thought Billy looked brilliant in terms of ball control and that lovely cross when he came on, Rhian doesn't quite have that about him which we may need in that lone striker role with a number 10 behind.

Great win. UTB

I think you've called it just about right there Pommpey. I was half expecting a real roasting from you for Norwood's performance, but you acknowledge he did put in a decent performance in the first half. Alas, I fear the penalty miss severely affected his game in the second half, although one crunching tackle he made was notable. Fleck also was largely anonymous after half time and was rightly substituted. I do wonder if he's struggling with some injury, be it physical or mental, but I'd hate to write the real John off just yet.
We need to keep playing Brewster, who I believe is a confidence player, who will come good, and seems to be developing a good understanding with the excellent N'Diaye and Berge, who we need to keep at all costs.
Defence looked much more solid and, at the moment, picks itself.
There will be sterner tests in the next few weeks, and it will be interesting to see what impact the new lads can inject when introduced.
Edit:Oh, I nearly forgot...Jebbison. I really don't get it. He seems miles away from being a Championship level striker at present, weak as piss. Another loan spell away would do him good, or even better, flog him to some saps like Everton for a couple of million.

Given what we'd seen on Monday and Hecky's insistence on playing the daft lads in midfield, today I was a bit dismayed and feared Millwall burying us by half time and HJ&SMcC panicking all of our signings into a second half disasterzone. It's great to be wrong.

It was a game of two halfs though wasn't it? First half we set ourselves up versus an uncharacteristically clueless Millwall outfit and capitalised on some poor understanding of capability from some vastly improved playmakers. In the first 45, our midfield performed (largely) like you'd want them to play. They put Millwall seriously on the back foot and coupled with some graft from Brewster we literally ripped them to bits. The 2-0 lead gifted to United could have been more and really should have been. We could have, at 3-0 just stuck on five subs for a run about but as many people pointed out on shoutbox, a goal to them and we are in trouble. It was also nice to see one shoutbox contributor was happily holidaying in his home in Portgual. Yay!

Our first was wonderfully Wimbledon. Big Davey Beasant puts some snow on it and it bounces onto the feet of the runner on goal. Brewster did well to get involved and N'Daiye slotted it away coolly. Anel was simply scintillating (the cunteyed tossers on SUTV used that word excessively, so why not?) and his class showed through emulating Bash with his probing runs past their defenders. Take note, Norwood. Fleck had a decent first as well and the triangles were back out wide. It was a vintage Blades first half, extremely crowd pleasy and redolent of those heady days of mid-Wilder or mid-Bassett where we simply took the game off the opposition and refused to let them have it back. We even got a penalty which, although squandered, mattered little.

I expected Rowett to have a word at half time and oddly, although Millwall came at us for the first twenty minutes without much effect. A few close shaves were cleared but something had happened in midfield to turn Johnny into Jimmy, not let Sander be so effective and continue Norwood's desperate efforts. We tried to penetrate but didn't make a great deal of headway even with subs on the pitch. Glad to see we managed the result to three points and in all, United deserved it. But we still lacked the capacity to deliver more sword strikes after looking clinical in the first half. Not moaning about the result - yay for us. But had we not scored and Norwood's penalty miss been the difference between one and three points today, we'd be asking questions of Hecky and his inability to start with supposed talent to sustain the momentum and destroy the opposition.

Foderingham 6/10: Not because he played badly. He just didn't have much to save but collect or punch crosses
Baldock 6.5/10: Again, George plays one character like Bill Roache plays Ken Barlow. He's predictably committed and works his arse off but sometimes he is a bit unsighted and clumsy which takes a full mark off him today
Anel 9/10: Tremendous debut for the lad. Surging runs past players, positionally great in attack, committed in the tackle, difficult to get round and times his interceptions even in the box with experience and knowledge. Possibly the new Basham there
Egan 8/10: Solid if unspoken game for him and obviously more comfortable with Clark and Anel alongside him
Clark 8.5/10: Another great performance and better than Monday's which was more a 'what the fuck have we signed?' Today was 'Reyt Player! Gerrim signed!' Real commitment and made it difficult for Afobe and their front line
RND 6/10: Had his hands full with their right winger in more ways than one
Berge 8.5/10: faded in the second but that first half was showreel stuff. When he's got the ball and sets off past players, he looks and runs like Currie. Tremendously taken goal
Norwood 5/10: I won't give him below that because on balance, he did make some passable challenges and interceptions. But he is frequently robbed or makes a shit decision in passing and turns over the impetus and possession. Slate me all you want. I remain unconvinced this bloke 'makes us tick' or out team is 'better with him in it'. Still think watchers are easily pleased by the window dressing and fail to see it is old stock, well past it's sell-by-date. And despite the keeper moving, he needs to not take another penalty for us again because he doesn't have 'sweet feet' at all.
Fleck 6/10: A far better performance from John-not-Jim today particularly the first half. Second half he reverted to type and was subbed
N'Daiye 8/5/10: Another great outing from the danger man. Quick, effective and threatening. Just what we want if its only for two thirds of every game
Brewster 7/10: Good effort from the lad today running at them and looking less clueless and lost. Great endeavour buying the penalty too

Sharp 5/10: Dug in solidly if winning not much because we'd pulled back into our shell by the time he came on
Jebbison 4/10: Not really impressed to be honest. Fluffed a great goalscorers opportunity near the end
Osborn 6/10: Did his usual whriling dervish act

HJ&SMcC: 8/10: Shame we didn't see the real potential get a run out today but in a way understandable. Good strategy throughout mind - kill them off early with pressure and pressing and manage the game to three points at the end

It was a game of 2 halves but I think that was a tactical change by the management, rather than a team climbing into it's shell. We got involved in too many basketball games last season, that bit us on the arse, Preston away being the most obvious example and I think our 2nd half plan was very much to take the sting out of the game and play on the break, and I'd say it worked as planned as I don't think Wes had a save to make.

Disagree on Jebbison. I thought he offered an ideal physicality when he came on. Able to stretch their defence and got physical with the centre backs. I appreciate Anel was pissed off having run 70 yards, when Jebbo dragged his shot wide instead of playing him in but strikers going for goal when they get a sight is not necasarily a bad thing.

As for the midfield two, we really need a stronger option in there and hopefully Doyle is that man.

This season is huge for him personally & so it is for us. Totally agree with your thoughts here - he looks like a proper player & miles further forward than he was this time last season.
Makes me wonder where he’ll be in another 12 months in every respect.
It’s sort of funny what happens after an hour though. He’s put that much into minutes 1-60 that in minute 61 it’s as though he goes into ‘limp-home’ mode.
Great player indeed & I’m gonna enjoy watching him this season if he keeps this standard up.

I always get the feeling that Norwood looks like a scared rabbit when he is put in the spot light he’s more of a team man not an individual and definitely not a penalty taker

Norwood was poor again, continually gave the ball away and we lost possession, crosses as ever over hit and miss every one
I thought Jebbison looked ok when he came on, very fast and quite skilful and effective
Anal very good
Shame we dropped so deep second half, if they had pulled a goal back would have been I real problem
Great to get a win and we are off

The Ken Barlow - Baldock thing is superb. Can't stop laughing at it.

The thing with Norwood is that he never hides
Whatever his form he will always keep trying to make things happen
Whatever the outcome this is a quality I greatly admire
Unlike fleck, poor lad has done great to recover after

At least with five subs and our bench options, we can and must avoid running him into the ground.

An hour of him full tilter will be sufficient to worry teams and influence games, and with flair players to replace him I’m optimistic we can create chances, much better than I thought we would post gibbs white.

Thought Jebbison did reasonably well when he came on, certainly put himself about and tried to make things happen
Agree jebbo looked far more of a threat than brewster imo, fast and direct causing problems, he did scuff a chance but people forget the lad is just 18, he's going to be a star, he's way better than Calvin Lewin was at his age

I wonder how much better our forwards would be if we had an upgraded midfield? It’s not that Norwood and Fleck don’t do a job more of a good consistent job which really would put us in an advantageous position.

N'Daiye is always positive, forward looking and seeking out opportunities. On the ball he is dangerous, near goal threatening and when dispossessed or withing sight of tackling he is tenacious. Great player.

I have now started timing my piss break with N’Daiye removing his shin pads from his socks waiting for physio

I would have marked Billy higher. I know he wasn't on the pitch long, but he showed his strength, holding players off, holding the ball, bringing others in. Brewster and Jebbison don't have that strength and were often knocked off the ball. They have time on their side though, and can improve.

Ndiaye is just a joy to watch, I think this could be his defining season, if we can keep him fit.

I would have liked to see the two young lads (Khadra and McAtee) come on for 10 minutes, at the end, but Hecky (without mentioning them by name) did say in his interview that the "new lads" need to get up to match-day speed.

Ahmedhodzic wins the "best debut in a Blades shirt, for years" award. Clark looked solid in his proper position.

Up the Blades.

Excellent first half some slick football played at a high tempo that Millwall struggled to handle and should have gone in with a larger lead .
Took our foot off the gas second half but never liked in trouble at any stage & Fodders didn’t have a shot to save . Thought the 3 centre backs were outstanding , with the new lad having a cracking debut .
Berge looked very good & Illy & Brewster worked tirelessly. Good three points against one of our jinxed teams , only a very small moan I thought bringing on Khadra or McAtee for last 20 mins might have livened us up a bit .
All in all a good result & performance ⚔️⚔️

How long does this take and what does it actually mean?

Most managers don't say anything much of substance in any of their interviews, they just keep it positive, keeps the fans happy.

It means they’ve barely trained with us so probably aren’t very familiar with their roles in the team and their positioning. I’d guess he wants a few more training sessions with them, working on team shape.

Bit late today, nice long lunch in 30 deg' of loverly heat.
Good report and interesting read, thanks.

Egan has his (new) trustworthy mate(s) alongside him, now watch him turn back the clock and become the best defender in this division.
Agree about Norwood.
Agree about Anel.
Everybody had a descent game.
Has to be said Millwall are a really poor side on yesterdays showing.
The next Champ' match against a struggling (after two games!) Middlesbrough might be more of a test.
Enough!! the tinto vino calls 😀 😀 😀

Like the comparison with TC, although lacks the showboating/showmanship of TC, not surprising though as the professional footballing world seems to take itself too seriously these days. Jebbison’s athleticism towards the end gave the Millwall defence something to worry about, along with old stager and wily pro Billy Blade
