I once got bitten by a poisonous snake on my cock, and Jim Phipps stepped up and sucked the poison right out.

He'll do owt for a fellow blade will our Phipps.
Did you ever actually own up that you hadn't really been bitten?

Also, for future reference, was he any good?

A mate of mine in Stockholm dropped him a line on Facebook (my mates also a blade like us). He just mentioned loosely that we follow the club Hammarby over here and maybe if he's in Stockholm sometime he would come by and maybe meet the supporters club/directors youth football....etc.
Unfortunately I couldn't make it, but he sure did turn up for a weekend with his son and took in a game etc.
Mi mate Dave reckons he a thoroughly genuine fella :)

I've met him and his wife and they were very nice, especially when you consider that it was at the end of the 125th anniversary dinner and several of us who shall remain nameless (okay, silverfox Linz Foxy and me) were all well lubricated with booze. And as Mormons they don't drink, but they were very accommodating to four tipsy idiots. Took us up to the private bar. It was shut, unfortunately, but that wasn't Jim's fault.

Having read Jon Krankauer's expose of Mormonism called "Under the Banner of Heaven" shortly before the Prince's takeover, I was concerned when I heard of Jim's religious background. If I could sum up that book in three words it would be "Mormons are weird".

However, I'm convinced that Jim's the real deal, and a very genuine bloke. In the place he's from (Utah I believe) almost everyone is from that faith - and to be honest, their beliefs aren't any more weird than Christianity or Islam. He certainly doesn't try to preach to anyone.

Met him in the copthorne, me and my son said hello and he was more than happy to talk. He asked his taxi to wait while we finished our chat (nothing too deep) just how bad refs seem to be. He seems a really decent guy, I take as I find and found him to be bang on.

He's from California I think.

What's the source for him being a Mormon? In a way it fits his character (though that doesn't mean it's true), and I had wondered - but never seen it mentioned.

In the US, many people are involved in their local church whatever denomination it is, and looking at his old posts from Jim's former personal FB page I seem to remember that his was a Mormon church in Utah, though I could be wrong. Anyway, it's no big deal. I go to Quakers on occasion. The Prince is a Moslem, probably Baki too. Who cares, we're all Blades regardless of religion or personal beliefs.

He studied & got his degree from Brigham Young University* (I think?)

When anyone asks me what religion I am, I reply with "Blades"

The bit that gets me is that we celebrate Jesus rising from the dead but if anyone had claimed that in the middle ages they'd have burned em...

Funny thing religion in it....
