Most pointless Blades game attended?

Some Zenith Data Systems Cup game where we battered Oldham. Bassett referred to it as “the zenith data systems nonsense cup”.

I was living in Sheffield at the time, with a West terrace season ticket but don't remember this match at all!! What a squad though, I can name every player still, happy days.
I remember Nathan Peel playing. Not much else!

Any cup match under Wilder.

Other mentions- the one Silent mentioned above v Villa what the fuck was that about?

Any testimonial game

Exeter away in the Ched season booked a weekend away for a "promotion" party there was literally a funeral atmosphere all weekend as no one wanted to be there and we knew there was nothing riding on the game.

86/87 all season and any game in the drabfest that was 01/02
I was at Exeter too. Mainly went for a weekend away and because it was a ground I hadn't been to before, but actually there was something riding on the game. We were only a point behind Wednesday with a better goal difference so 'only' had to better their result. But they were at home to already relegated Wycombe and the contrasting form of the teams meant I didn't expect anything. I don't remember the goals (finished 2-2) but do remember Beattie's red card.

Scunthorpe away pre-season a couple of years ago.

Got there just as the bar was telling everyone they'd got no gas and no working chillers so couldn't serve any beer at all, which went down like a sack of shit on a 34° day.

Watched a pretty decent strength team get beat 3-2 by Scunthorpe.

All trains cancelled on the way home so I was sat on the station car park floor in the baking sun, borderline fully sober, in 34° heat...some lad's grandad was the hero of the day, came from Rotherham to pick a load of
us stragglers up and helped get us back to Sheff. Wouldn't take any petrol money from any of us.

Got back, opened my mate's door and his bastard cat ran off, proper silly day that was.

I think that was also the last time I saw Brewster score a goal in the flesh
Trains from Donny going out were cancelled too, ended up on a rail replacement coach.

We were stuck on the train from Meadowhall just outside Donny for half an hour in that heat too.

We found some pubs with beer though 😁

I suppose it’s pointless attending any friendly game as the result is pointless.

So, in terms of a competitive 1st team game, it would be Hartlepool away in the JPT. It was freezing, I can’t even remember if we won or lost, but I remember their keeper was called Flinders.
He licks winders 😁

Tonight was very very weird. Felt like a hybrid u21/league cup first round game.

Disgusting and disgraceful how much the FA Cup has been devalued in recent years. It has gradually got worse over the years, but this season feels like a turning point. I've never known an FA Cup 3rd Round game to feel so pointless.

They just don't give a shit about it anymore. Shifting it to a Thursday at 7pm is one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen.

Along with a match thread appearing on this forum just before kick-off

v Villa in a friendly in January 1987 on the frosty pitch. Villa's Andy Gray had a neck injury just before half time after falling on the hard pitch. Ref decided during half time to have the match abandoned.
When the tannoy announced the game had been abandoned, the Kop started chanting "We want a quid back" (Admission was £2).

It was quite common in the 1970s and 1980s for 1st or 2nd division clubs to arrange a friendly match on the 4th round day if they are out of the cup. I remember us playing a friendly at Chesterfield on 4th round day in 1971, played at Israel in 1972, played County Cup final in 1974 and played at Notts County in 1976.
Leeds in 1980 iirc

Forgot about that, about a hundred of us were stood outside Donny station waiting for coaches too!

Anglo Italian cup game against….. it was that pointless I can’t remember

Blackpool 0 - 0 Blades. Mid January 2015/16.

Absolutely freezing and no trains after the game! Enough to turn you off football.

I think one issue is that because the cup starts for Prem and Championship teams in early January, even the mid table teams think "we've still a chance of finishing the season well" or "we're still in danger of going down" so "best not to risk our best players in the Cup".

Now if the cup was played over a shorter period of time later in the season (3rd round starting mid Feb?) you'd have more mid-table teams thinking "mid-table mediocrity it is... lets try for a cup run".

Obviously that wouldn't apply to us or Cardiff this season, but at least there'd be a few teams giving it a decent go.

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet. But went to a midweek Full Members Cup game away at Elland Road mid-80's. Think it was a draw no idea who scored for the Blades. Very, very sparse crowd. Went on the train football special & there were more coppers on the train than Blades fans. Pointless.
