Morgs on Hume...

Just remembered where I saw an incident like the Morgan - Hume one and it was a couple of years ago. As some of you know, I am really into Italian football and follow both Inter and Hellas Verona.

Thinking back it was Marco Materazzi and Juan Pablo Sorin who was at Villereal at the time. There was a collision in the box that involved Materazzi's elbow going into Sorin's face. Spot any similarities??

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=VMqSysgrhzU&feature=related Skip to 2:23 to see the incident.

Like with the Hume incident, he has collided with the player before the ball has got to them and caused him a badly swollen eye and a bad cut which is bleeding quite profusely. Guess what? He didn't even get booked for it. But because it was Materazzi and his reputation it was led to be believed and all hyped up that it was intentional. As I believe is the same with Morgan, people are going on his reputation of dishing out the physical side of the game.

Just thought it'd be good to be able to compare this latest incident to something else. And also because I think Materazzi is one of the best defenders in the game today :)

That video also goes to prove that being a so called "thug" does have a place in the sport. Did he not win the World Cup? :D

I have to disagree again with you there mate.

He really deserved something bad happening to him, even if it lowered me to his level.

Probably the worst tackle iv seen.

That's fair enough, and I know I'm probably in the minority! I still can't stand the man though.

According to the Star, the FA will take no further action:

Officials at Soho Square are understood to have arrived at their decision after consulting senior figures within the game, including former referees, about whether there was a need to invoke special powers against the Sheffield United captain.

Morgan, who was cautioned by referee Andy D'Urso, has been the subject of intense media speculation since it was revealed that Hume was taken to hospital after a match which United won 2-1 with Barnsley manager Simon Davey particularly outspoken in his criticism of the United centre-half.

It has been suggested in some quarters that a clash between Ben Thatcher and Pedro Mendes in August 2006, which saw the former Manchester City full-back receive an eight match ban, had set a precedent for the FA to act.

But a spokesman for the governing body told this newspaper: "As people will be aware there are only very limited and exceptional circumstances where we can intervene, particularly after a caution has already been issued.

"But we have canvassed a wide variety of expert opinion on this incident and while, it is fair to say, most felt that it was a red card offence, the challenge itself could not be described as exceptional.

"In the case of Mendes and Thatcher, that clearly was exceptional which is why we took certain steps."

The spokesman added: "We have to be dispassionate and cannot be swayed or influenced, however harsh it that might sound, by the injury a player suffers.

"Otherwise we would find ourselves in a situation where a horrendous tackle is made, the other player walks away from it unscathed and then we could do nothing."

News that Morgan is unlikely to face further sanction, at least from the FA, will be welcomed by United as they prepare for Saturday's visit of Reading.

Despite refusing to comment publicly on the matter - other than to express concern and sympathy for Hume's predicament - some within Bramall Lane have spoken privately of their irritation at what they perceive has been a deliberate attempt to smear the reputation of one of their senior professionals.

Hume was discharged from the high dependancy unit of a Manchester hospital earlier this week but Davey has insisted Barnsley could yet take legal action; although it remains clear whether that threat is directed against United, the player himself or both.

Meanwhile, Barnsley supporters have set-up an online petition calling for South Yorkshire Police to investigate the matter.

Bugger me sideways. The FA have got some balls after all.

That's not going to stop several knuckle draggers wanting to lynch your favourite Times writer for sticking up for Morgan. Apparently I am the author of a "really disgraceful, disrectful article" and only possess "half a brain". What ever "disrectful" means anyway.
Still, it's all water off a duck's back.

and an update:

BARNSLEY are denying the report stating that the FA will take no action following the controversial match at Oakwell with Sheffield United which left Iain Hume in hospital suffering a fractured skull.
Oakwell general manager Don Rowing said the FA had undertaken to make a ruling once they had received evidence from Barnsley including a match video.

"Someone has jumped the gun and the FA have apologised profusely," he added.

Barnsley have highlighted other incidents during the match as well as the challenge from Chris Morgan which left Hume severely injured.

I'm assuming other incidents will include the pushing to the floor of Kyle Naughton in the build up to their goal, the various two-footed late challenges in the first 10 mins, De Silvas play acting in trying not to get sent off and Kyle Naughton being thrown to the floor by his neck by Darren Moore.

and kozzy going in late on SJH??

At least you dont like him at all matth!

I'm not sure that helps matters much, although I think I see your point.

I wasn't trying to help matters, just trying to show a proper comparison other than the Ben Thatcher one that the Dingles keep mentioning.

Also, just noticed the bottle being thrown at Beattie when he's on the floor after the 1st goal.

Blades statement on OS

Kevin Blackwell has revealed that Chris Morgan showed his concern for Iain Hume both during and after the game at Oakwell last Saturday.

The Blades boss reiterated that the Blades are "devastated" by the striker's injury and that dialogue with Barnsley had been pursued:

"Without doubt our thoughts are with Iain and his family who are having a tough time, but we have let our thoughts be known to him privately.

"Chris Morgan tried to speak to Iain at half-time and after the game - before the extent of the injury was known - and I contacted Barnsley straight away when the news broke. Terry Robinson also sent a card and the best wishes of the board.

"People can make out that Chris Morgan is heartless, but it is a contact game and things like this can happen sometimes - a similar thing happened in the Sheffield derby recently.

"Of course it has affected Chris as well - but not half as much as it has Iain Hume and his family and our thoughts are entirely with them."

Very well done Blades. At least someone actually gives a toss about Hume. It's evidently more than can be said for his own manager.

Davey recieves FA charge

taken for sky sports site.....

Barnsley manager Simon Davey has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association after Saturday's clash with Sheffield United.

Davey was sent to the stands late in the match after protesting at the award of a second-half penalty to the Blades.

The Oakwell chief has until 28th November to respond to the charge.

An FA statement said: "The charge relates to Davey's conduct towards the assistant referee late in the second half.

"Davey was asked to leave the technical area after protesting against the award of a penalty to Sheffield United."

Just watched calendar and the barnsley (new evidence submissions)
To show every hard/late challenge the blades made and not one mention of barnsley's is a disgrace!

Lets villainies’ Sheffield United!
Total sensationalism!

The other challengers have nothing to do with the incident unless there complaint is with the referee.

I’m just glad Sheffield united isn’t petty enough to respond in kind and make us look as stupid as barnsley.

Another day, another round of whinging:

TRUST CALLS FOR THE FA TO ACT

THE Barnsley FC Supporters Trust has called for the FA to act on the incident between Chris Morgan and Iain Hume during the game between Barnsley FC and Sheffield United at Oakwell on Saturday November 8.

Whilst it is clear that the referee Andy D'Urso issued a yellow card to Chris Morgan, and it is common knowledge that these cannot be upgraded retrospectively to a red card, the FA have set a precedent with a previous incident involving Ben Thatcher and Pedro Mendes.

The Trust feels that the FA delay in announcing that they are willing to look at the incident is damaging the game and causing much anger and debate.

t is clear from the video evidence, that the incident should be considered an exceptional case and should have warranted a red card and also further punishment as was the case with the Thatcher incident.

We call on the FA to make a statement on this issue as soon as possible.

Change the rules says Davey

BARNSLEY boss Simon Davey has taken a degree of heat off Chris Morgan, whose horror challenge left Iain Hume requiring emergency brain surgery
"I've never once said that Chris Morgan went out actively to put Iain Hume in hospital," Davey declared as the fall-out from Saturday's derby against Sheffield United continued to impact on both clubs.

"I was angry at the time, I still am angry about the challenge.

"It shouldn't be on a football field and that is my opinion," Davey continued. "But we have to make sure that the right authorities take responsibility.

"For me the incident warranted more than a yellow card."

The FA are understood to be considering evidence from Barnsley before deciding whether to inflict further punishment on the Sheffield United captain.

Davey is angling for a lengthy suspension.

"I think it's a FIFA directive that once a punishment has been handed out by a referee, there is no way that you can change the decision," he said,

If you polled a million people to look at the evidence I don't think there'd be many who'd say he got what he deserved, so really there should be some avenue where it can be changed.

"There have been cases like the Ben Thatcher case where extra punishment can be given."

Thatcher was suspended for eight games by the FA for elbowing Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes in 2006.

Like Morgan, he was yellow-carded in the match.

A law firm has also been engaged by Barnsley to advise whether to pursue a case through the civil courts. Lawyers are meeting with Iain Hume's agent on Monday.

Davey has visited Hume twice so far.

"Iain's getting better. I was with him on Thursday night as the hospital," he said

"He's a lot better from when I saw him on Monday. He's out of the dependency unit.

"He was sitting up last night and he had his mum and dad and family around him. He was in quite good spirits.

The Barnsley boss has also defended medical staff at the club against claims that more might have been done for Hume at Barnsley before he was admitted to hospital in Salford on Sunday.

"We did everything we possibly could when presented with the evidence that we had," he said.

"We had physios on call and the doctor on call and everything that we did was the right thing to do.

"Even when the player went to the hospital the following day, he was going to be sent home until his symptoms worsened and then he had the emergency operation for the bleed on the brain."

Ridiculous pressure being put on the FA by this tin-pot club. Their press office must consist of union men from the mines who've long since lost their jobs... they trade in a similar line of propaganda.

Disgraceful way Dingles are trying to smear Morgan and Blades, it was a red card job but ref gave Yellow, (Durso is a complete tosser, kicked out of Prem for being no good), he did not initially even give a foul against Morgan, but waited until Blades eventually put ball into touch before booking Morgan. No reason to book if he saw any incident should have been a straight red.

FA have said “nothing extraordinary” in the challenge hence no further action, however Slag Heap Rovers still intend sending further “evidence” for them to review.

Simon Davey absolute disgrace in his attempts to put up a smokescreen to try and defend his actions hopefully FA will see through it and give him a long touchline ban.

This should see him sacked as he has lived on last seasons cup run for too long.

Ian Hume is a Dickov type player always leaving the foot in and trying to referee games, interestingly a M City fan was talking to me before the game and was sure he would get it from Sun Jihai has he had done Sun off the ball 2 seasons ago in a cup game.

He was also red carded against Colchester last seaon when playing for Leicester for elbowing an opponent (goes around comes around)!

?

Right thing to do? You get a head injury like that your off to hospital especially as davey is making out his cheekbone wasn't in the same position.

Unless it wasn't that bad as he's making out to be to make morgan look bad. tosser.

This is my first post on this.

Personally, like many other things I think it has been blown out of all proportion. Any other player or injury and I don't think as much would have been said. We all know what Morgan can be like and I think the fact of his reputation and that he used to play for them played a part in it. Although after seeing it a few times, it did look as though he took a swing but he seems to have eyes on the ball.

I know all this has more likely been said but I wanted to put my view across.

Getting sick of hearing about this now to be honest.

Let the FA decide what to do.

Ones thing is for sure Barnsley can whistle if they are wanting any cash.

Are you serious?

I am a Leicester fan and, as such, not someone who is very keen on Iain Hume. He made all sorts of promises about staying and then left at the first offer. On top of this I have always respected Chris Morgan, who has a achieved a lot in the game through graft and determination.

Having said all that, I am dismayed by the calous nature of some of lot when refering to the challenge from the other night. having watched it several times it is clear that Morgan had every intention to injure Hume. He had no reason to swing the elbow as he didn't even jump, which is the only time you would need to do that to generate power. He also swung with ridiculous severity. With a guy in hospital with life threatening injuries, it seems incredible to me that peoplecan make light of this. If that had been a park game the police would have got involved for sure. It isn't disloyal to Sheffield United to acknowledge when your player commits a horrific assault.

As for the guy earlier refering to the Cech challenge, that is totally different, anybody could see that that was an accident and it is pointless to use it as a comparison as there is non to draw.

I think it is important that fans unite against the sort of challenge by Morgan and show they don;t approve to stamp life-threatening attacks out of the game, as it is clearly in everybodies interests.

Be careful what you say. The only person that knows that is Morgan.

If you have watched the way Morgan heads the ball he often does swings his arms back.

It didn't look good but do you all want a no contact sport???

The lad went home after the match and no one in Dingleland mentioned the challenge until he went to hospital.

Why??

If you have watched the way Morgan heads the ball he often does swings his arms back.

I was saying that to my dad yesterday, he gets some good distance on his headers and uses his elbows to generate that. Maybe if the club had some footage of him heading the ball like that it would show the people making hurtful accusations towards Morgan.

And i agree with Bladesman, the sooner this gets sorted the better.

Foxy, didn't you post this on this article? (Comment by Frankie)
http://timesonline.typepad.com/fanzine_fanzone/2008/11/sheffield-unite.html
or did you use some of the same wording?

The Cech challenge was as Deliberate/Accidental as the Hume one in lots of peoples opinions.
You can't say either way what the truth is as only Hunt/Morgan know that.

having watched it several times it is clear that Morgan had every intention to injure Hume.

How have you managed that then? mind power? If he wanted to injure him, wouldn't he have looked where Hume was?

He had no reason to swing the elbow as he didn't even jump, which is the only time you would need to do that to generate power. He also swung with ridiculous severity.

There are many potential reasons he may have done it, he did and therefore should have been sent off for dangerous play.. Does that mean he tried to fracture his skull though?

With a guy in hospital with life threatening injuries, it seems incredible to me that peoplecan make light of this. If that had been a park game the police would have got involved for sure. It isn't disloyal to Sheffield United to acknowledge when your player commits a horrific assault.

Nobody is making light of the outcome. The outcome however shouldn't cloud or effect the actual challenge. Would you have been posting this had Hume not been unlucky enough to be injured in such a way?

As for the guy earlier refering to the Cech challenge, that is totally different, anybody could see that that was an accident and it is pointless to use it as a comparison as there is non to draw.

So a player gaining a head injury in far from obviously intentional circumstances is pointless to compare with a player gaining a head injury in far from obviously intentional circumstances??? okay then

I think it is important that fans unite against the sort of challenge by Morgan and show they don;t approve to stamp life-threatening attacks out of the game, as it is clearly in everybodies interests.

The question is, how do you define a "life-threatening" attack? its easily possible to gain life threatening injuries any time a player steps out onto the field. Players clash/come together all the time. Playing a physical sport at such a pace with commitment means injuries are always going to be an unfortunate problem.

Come on.

He elbowed him, on purpose.

If Hume has been our player and Moegan not we wouldn't be saying Morgan 'didnt mean it'

He clearly did, which is sad.

The judge, jury and executioner has decided.

Surprise surprise.

Summat to whinge about and Sharpy arrives :)

It'd be amazing if it wasn't so predictable.

And to Fox:

If we're talking about players being victimised because of their reputations, how about when your lads (one of whom is currently one of our lads) got caught with their pants down in La Manga?

The press had them hung, drawn and quartered because of who they were, not what they were proven not to have done.
