Morgs on Hume...

Just seen it in close up for first time - I don't think that was intentional. Wrong place at wrong time I'm afraid. There didn't seem to be enough effort for it to be intentional

Yeah. Morg's was moving slowly and sideways plus didn't need to jump cos of the flight of the ball. Hume seemed to come in at quite some speed. and running into Morgan at speed is like hitting a brick wall i'd imagine.

Right I've watched all the replays of it. Morgan doesn't seem to look away from the ball and although he doesn't jump, he thrusts forward to head the ball. However, watch Hume. He looks at Morgan before the challenge and he flings his left arm out towards Morgan. He doesn't hit him in the face because he is a short arse. Another point to that challenge is that Hume has no chance of winning it so why has he gone in for it?? He is known to be a dirty player and has been sent off on quite a few occasions.

I've seen the replays again and again.

It's obvious that Hume is caught, but just to echo what's been said, I don't think it was intentional.

Like the bloke on Look North said last night, if lawyers get involved, then it'll be something dealt with by the insurance companies of both clubs. I'd have thought if the FA were going to get involved, they would have made a statement by now with all the hot air Davey is blowing.

Am I correct in thinking that no further action will be taken against Morgan by the FA as the referee dealt with the matter at the time with a yellow card. Seem to recall this was why Morgan was banned after his tussle with that Arsenal player because the referee hadnt dealt with it?

That's the theory. They often like to bend the rules dependant on player and situation though.

The thing is... hardly anything was mentioned about it until yesterday. As Mouse points out, if action is taken in a footballing sense now, it would be because of the injury and the things that Davey has been saying - which is wrong.

However, from the things Davey has been saying, it seems they want some cash. Which is a bit crass considering you have a player laying in intensive care. By all means let Hume take civil action, but let the man get well first.

What a load of bollox.............accidents happen.

How much did Hulse get from Chelski ?

I'm slightly concerned that this will turn into a Ross/Brand situation... where the outcry is the measure of action that should be taken, not the actual incident itself.

The Dingles have whipped themselves up into a massive frenzy, calling anyone who doesn't agree with them all the names under the sun and hoping that Morgan has his legs broken at best and at worst, killed.

They're also busy writing away to the FA and FL to pressure them into taking action. My primary concern is that they're gutless beyond belief... will they bow to the pressure the Dingles are exerting just to shut them up? We are only lowly Sheffield United after all, what do our players matter?

What they also have to ask themselves is would Morgan have even been on the pitch if one of their own hadn't sent Killa off a few weeks earlier? (though possibly yes, if Ugo had still been sent off :D)

Having look at it several times I think that Morgan should be appealing against the booking!! Hume was looking for him rather than the other way round.

Having said that, I really do hope Hume makes a full recovery and is back playing as quickly as possible.

Further to this point... Here's a similar (more obvious) example...

Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel has escaped disciplinary action over his alleged elbowing of Sheffield United captain Chris Morgan during last night's Premiership match at Bramall Lane.

Referee Mark Halsey has confirmed to the Football Association that he did witness the incident which happened during the closing stages of the 2-2 draw.

As a result, under FIFA regulations, the FA are powerless to pursue the matter further and Angel has avoided the possibility of having to serve a three-game ban for violent conduct.

The FA had already planned to study 'any relevant video footage' of the incident.

But an FA spokesman said: 'Mark Halsey has confirmed to us that he did see the incident at the time and, under FIFA regulations, we are unable to take any retrospective disciplinary action.'

Halsey dealt with the matter at the time by awarding a free-kick to the Blades.

Television replays suggested Angel did make some contact with Morgan with his elbow, although only the Colombian international will know whether there was any intent.

Morgan appeared incensed and, at the final whistle, raced down the players' tunnel where what Villa manager Martin O'Neill described as a 'kerfuffle' took place.

O'Neill will be relieved at today's announcement by the FA as he can ill afford to be without the club's record signing for the hectic festive period given the lack of depth to his squad.

I've seen that Barnsley are writing letters to the FA regarding Saturday. I think they'll be something like this...

From Barnsley OS:

HE IS A MESS - DAVEY

Iain has been moved out of the high dependency unit of a Manchester hospital after suffering a sickening fractured skull in Saturday's south Yorkshire derby against Sheffield United.

Simon told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk: "I went to see Iain yesterday evening and he is conscious although he has not slept since the incident and he is not the most talkative. He is out of the high dependency unit now and they have moved him onto a hospital ward, which is good news, although he has tubes sticking out of his head.

"The operation went well but he is very down and very angry. He has a scar that runs from his forehead in the shape of a horseshoe right round to his ear. He is black and blue, his head is swollen and he is a mess".

Glad to hear he's improving.

Its all getting ridiculous now with the hysteria...

A footballer has suffered a life-threatening injury, not as a result of an accident or even carelessness but as a result of the deliberate and malicious actions of a player on the opposing team.
Anyone viewing the video evidence will come to the same conclusion.

The question is who is responsible for what happened.
Clearly the player, Chris Morgan is responsible for his actions on the pitch, but his Manager and Club Chairman must also accept responsibility.

Chris Morgan should be banned for life, (he nearly killed someone!) Blackwell should resign, and the Chairman should, as they say, consider his position.

I know not totally relevant but they tend to forget that Morgan is from Barnsley and played for them for 7 years so I don't see why he would deliberately go out to upset his home town team.

What I'd like to know is why no-one was this incensed at the time?

Why they left him 5 mins in the hopes of getting him back on the pitch?

Why they sent him home on Saturday instead of giving him an x-ray?

Why Davey used his post match interview moaning about the penalty and not this incident?

Seems to me, since finding out the extent of his injury, suddenly the incident has become 100 times worse and worthy of the press office at Barnsley working overtime. It's a pity they aren't more concerned for the player than getting some cash and dragging peoples names through the dirt.

Surely its the fault of the Barnsley Medical staff for not sending him to Hosp for Xrays????
It does look bad on TV, but Hume jumps into Morgans Elbow not the other way round!

Apparently, Blackwell advocates the use of elbows in his team talks now as well.

I do hope the club lawyers are looking in the same places as I am...

EDIT:

Can these statements be considered "Facts"?

-Chris Morgan deliberately set out to elbow Hume in the face

Subjective. No, not a fact.

-Chris Morgan ran from his position on the field to get involved in the two sendings off just minutes earlier, thus proving he was pumped up for a row

As did many other players. Chris Morgan is the team captain and as such, will talk to the referee about matters concerning his players. This does not prove he was "pumped for a row". Rob Kozluk was one of the longest complainers. This proves nothing.

-Chris Morgan knew that post-double sending off, the ref would be less likely to issue another red straight afterwards

Again, subjective. Not a fact.

-Chris Morgan knows how to elbow players and get away with it, whether or not its been taught him by Blackwell

Now you're just being plain silly.

-Chris Morgan made absolutely no attempt to play the ball

He did play the ball. He headed it.

-Iain Hume is in hospital with a potentially career threatening injury

Well done, the only fact you have.

Taken from a Barnsley Forum...

-Chris Morgan deliberately set out to elbow Hume in the face - No he didn't. Also, prove he did?

-Chris Morgan ran from his position on the field to get involved in the two sendings off just minutes earlier, thus proving he was pumped up for a row - He is the captain so he has the right to be involved with the incident/referee

-Chris Morgan knew that post-double sending off, the ref would be less likely to issue another red straight afterwards - Why would he? The ref has set a presedent for red carding violent behaviour and will try to be consistant

-Chris Morgan knows how to elbow players and get away with it, whether or not its been taught him by Blackwell - Everyone knows how to elbow someone and get away with it

-Chris Morgan made absolutely no attempt to play the ball - He won the ball and the ball was his to be won, Hume had no chance of getting to it anyway

-Iain Hume is in hospital with a potentially career threatening injury - Finally, a true point

If all of these can be considered facts, it blows the arguement that Morgan never meant to hurt Hume completely out of the water, and therefore means the FA have to act, regardless of the colour of card shown by the referee. - Tit!

I think these are the types of emails the FA should be getting, they'll be getting one from me.

This is ridicules’ has no Barnsley player ever fouled any one intentionally or not?
How many times in the average match dose a player get an elbow in the face especially in a derby?

Morgan’s elbow was high but Hume was definitely the one with all the momentum that probably caused most of the damage.

Morgan in no way wanted to fracture his skull I’m not even sure if he knew where Hume was until impact.

That’s the main point no one even when watching the video highlights can say 100% weather it was intentional or not so a yellow was the right action to take.

I have a lovely 8inch scar on my head from a challenge in the box where i went for a head and there player jumped it with a kung foo kick splitting my head like a melon sending me straight to hospital(what Barnsley should have done).
I’ll never know if it was a deliberate foul or not, I just took it as part of the game and the risk you take playing a physical sport.

What’s next boxers suing each other?

This is not the first injury like this and it wont be the last it called an accident.

Exactly. I could understand it if there was clear intent, but there wasn't. It's not like a clear, premeditated foul.

I also think that Barnsley, their manager, and their fans are behaving inappropriately considering Hume is still in hospital. Perhaps they could focus their attentions on wishing him a speedy recovery rather than winding themselves up to ridiculous levels of hyperbole against our player, our manager, our chairman, our club, the referee and the FA. I think it looks disrespectful to their player.

I like to think that if it had been the other way round - as it has been in the past, albeit less seriously - we'd be showing our concern for the player rather than rabidly blaming everyone in sight for what was, in actual fact, a genuine accident.

Poor show, Barnsley. You've let yourselves and your player down.

This is not the first injury like this and it wont be the last it called an accident.

Indeed... accidents happen.

Might I submit:

A fist on the shoulder of Speed, a few inches away from his face.

Killa's head a few inches away from an elbow.

An arm in the back of James Beattie.

Darren Moore was a very physical player when he was at Derby, and I doubt he's changed his game much now. I don't think there is any intent in the way he plays, but he's more dangerous than Morgan. Look at the number of bookings and free kicks he conceded last season for the Rams.

So you think it was clearly an intentional elbow?

With the intent to break his skull as the Barnsley lot are saying?

As a side note, the Barnsley fans say you only have to look at Morgan's record. So I have, this season and last both Morgan and Hume have been sent off twice. And defenders tend to get sent off more because of professional fouls such as pulling a shirt when they're the last man. Suggests to me that Hume isn't exactly an angel himself.

I don't think it's as clear cut as defending Morgan, Tino.

Morgan isn't completely blameless, as other posters have pointed out. His flailing elbow was dangerous.

However, he did not intentionally fracture Hume's skull. There was a collision that was just as much Hume's fault as Morgan's.

Also, as other people have also pointed out, there was none of this reaction until the extent of Hume's injuries became clear. Should the punishment be increased because of the injury? Does a fairly innocuous accident warrant a worse punishment than a premeditated attempt to injure if the former causes a more serious injury than the latter?

I would say that the answer is no.

I would also say that Morgan - a no-nonsense, down to earth family man, by all accounts - is being more than punished by the knowledge that he's put a fellow professional in hospital.

How can you say hume is as much to blame as morgan

Hume has a clear right to go for the ball, where as morgan cant do that with his elbow simple as it's dangerous
