STEVE Simonsen says he is in awe of the character his Sheffield United teammates have shown to force themselves into play-off contention after it was revealed Chris Morgan, the club's captain and centre-half, could miss the rest of the season with a calf problem.
Manager Kevin Blackwell revealed last night that the former Barnsley defender suffered a setback in his rehabilitation during training yesterday and is definitely out of tomorrow's game against Scunthorpe.
Morgan, who has failed to appear since being handed a two match ban for collecting his 10th caution of the campaign against Queens Park Rangers earlier this month, is the latest victim of an injury curse which has wreaked havoc with United's efforts to secure a top six finish.
But having climbed to eighth in the table following a midweek draw at Cardiff City, Simonsen said: "I'm amazed how small the squad is and that because, every day since I've been here, I've seen lads struggling to get fit.
"There have been something like 22 debuts here this season which is huge - it's two teams - but the quality is there. When you put that with the work ethic, spirit and determination the lads have shown then it means we've got every chance. To still be in with a shout despite everything they've had to contend with speaks volumes about their spirit."
Simonsen, on loan from Stoke, confirmed his month long deal could be extended if United remain in contention.
Glen Little could miss the visit of Nigel Adkins' side after tweaking a groin in the Welsh capital but fears about Morgan's availability could deal a blow to those hopes.
"Morgs was doing some work in training and he's felt it go again," Blackwell said.
"If the muscle is torn again then he might not be ready again this season. We'll just have to see. But knowing Morgs he'll be back because we know what he's like. The initial problem was caused when he twisted in training and felt something go."
