Memries of ‘ull – Pt. 2

The last time we played Hull was away at the KCOM Stadium on Friday 23rd February 2018. A shocking performance by the Blades saw us lose 0-1 to a second-half goal in another match marred by shabby protests by the Hull fans because the game was live on Sky. This brought an end to a fine run of results against the Tigers before which we hadn’t lost a league match at Hull since 8th October 1983 when The Blades lost 1-4 in the Third Division.

Men to watch:

Current joint top-scorer Jarrod Bowen joined The Tigers from Hereford in July 2014 and so far has scored 17 goals in 60 first-team appearances.

Australian international midfielder Jackson Irvine joined Hull from Burton Albion on 30th August 2017.

Incredibly, Hull is Adkin’s fifth top-flight managerial position. At Hull, he currently ‘boasts’ a Win % of 26.2%.

Hull are one of my earlier footballing memories, asked my mum and dad if, in lieu of a traditional birthday party I could take some mates to the Lane. Must have been my 7th or 8th birthday I reckon. King Keith made it a perfect day with a hat-trick in a 3-1 win. I recall shortly before or after he scored 2 v Barnsley as well, I just took it for granted at that age that he scored every match. A certain other striker is giving off similar vibes at the moment.

Hull are one of my earlier footballing memories, asked my mum and dad if, in lieu of a traditional birthday party I could take some mates to the Lane. Must have been my 7th or 8th birthday I reckon. King Keith made it a perfect day with a hat-trick in a 3-1 win. I recall shortly before or after he scored 2 v Barnsley as well, I just took it for granted at that age that he scored every match. A certain other striker is giving off similar vibes at the moment.

He scored 9 in 4 games: 3 vs Hull, 2 v Barnsley, 2 at Oldham and 2 at Bradford (well, at Elland Road against Bradford).

Home games against Hull from my youth:

1983-4 - a 2-2 draw between promotion rivals. Tony Norman made a mistake, letting Kevin Arnott's shot through his hands, to give us a point.

1985-6 - King Keith's hat trick in a 3-1 win. The last was a penalty after Steve Wigley, coming on for his debut, was brought down. Edwards took it because Morris had gone off for Wigley. John Burridge saved a late penalty from, I think, Stan McEwan, brother of Billy. He also saved one in the 0-0 draw in the return game, which was a good day because the Pigs lost the cup semi final to Everton.

1986-7 - Peter Beagrie scored twice from long range as we came back from a 1-0 deficit at half time to win 4-2. Another long range strike from Mark Dempsey and a Tony Daws tap in were our other goals. Only 11,000 there - our lowest ever Boxing Day crowd.

1987-8 - won 2-1 thanks to Clive Mendonca's first goal in senior football, a far post header into the top corner with about 10 mins to go. Hull had gome 10 games unbeaten to start the season, but met us in a rare purple patch during our relegation season. Mendonca looked a special prospect, but sadly he never really delivered in a United shirt. We also won 2-1 at Boothferry Park.

1989-90 - we nearly scored in the first minute and the last minute, and absolutely nothing of interest happened in between. The away game was also 0-0 and was, if anything, even worse.

Hull are the subject of yet another takeover bid. He're Adkins' views. He's obviously not lost his bullshitting abilities:

“It’s a football club (Hull) that historically has been at Championship level, in the Premier League, in Europe, been to the FA Cup final - it’s a great football club. There are big, passionate supporters here."

Yup. 13,798 at home to Leeds last Tuesday.

Hull are the subject of yet another takeover bid. He're Adkins' views. He's obviously not lost his bullshitting abilities:

In the interests of factual accuracy, they have 'historically been in the third and fourth divsions' too.

I couldn't find a table of all time rankings for all divisions to see their 'average' place since formation but I would estimate top end of League 1.

Here are the top 40 teams who have won the most points in the Prem/Division 1. Bury, Notts Co and Luton are in there, but 'Ull don't make the cut (United 17th, Wendy 14th*).

* I believe there may be a legal appeal ongoing, as their 'massiveness' has not been properly taken into account so they should be in the top one.

By 'top flight' I meant in the Leagues - not some obscure non-league team like Bangor City in The League of Wales (where Adkins began his 'career'). Scunthorpe (Promoted/Relegated/Promoted/Just avoided relegation. Sacked). Southampton - sacked. Reading - sacked. Blades - lowest league finish since 1984/85 - sacked. Hull (flirting with relegation. Not sacked. Yet.)

Very strange way of putting it.

Although I'm sure Macclesfield and Cambridge fans would be delighted to be described as top flight clubs.

To be fair, it's harsh to put his Scunthorpe and Southampton stints down as failure. On paper, he did even better than Wilder has done with us!

True, although that Southampton team was loaded with what turned out to be future internationals and Champions League players: Adam Lallana, Morgan Schneiderlin, Jack Cork, Ricky Lambert. The season before they Oxlade-Chamberlain too.

And I haven't even mentioned Billy Sharp

Wilder on the other hand has largely worked with players cast off from other teams. As much as I love Coutts, Fleck, Duffy, Sharp etc it's hard to imagine any of them playing Champions League football any time soon (or in the case of Fleck, representing Scotland...)
