Pep Guardiola wanting a smaller Premier League, which will further benefit the Big Six at the expense of other clubs. Perhaps Manchester City should go back down to the third tier.

The big clubs aren’t happy with the revenue share and the existence of promotion/relegation. An ideal situation for the elite clubs is a closed system in which they automatically qualify for every cup competition to maximise revenue with a salary cap based on a percentage of the revenue. In a sort of Americanised system without the draft as more and more American owners come into the sport the desire for this will increase NFL franchises make a profit which is very different from football.

and we'll eventually have the Sheffield Steelmen FC or RB Sheffield

We won’t be in it football at a lower level will be left to it’s own devices at least for a few decades in that sort of scenario the only reason those clubs would take any interest in the lower divisions would be to ensure a production line of players. Also it would suit the Manchester and Liverpool clubs if there weren’t yorkshire teams in there to compete for fans and market share.

They should reduce it to six teams and stick with a three team relegation...then he’ll change his tune
They should reduce the Premier to to 14 teams, by simply fucking the top six of to Europe. But unfortunately for them the Spanish, Italians, Germans and French simply won’t allow a lopsided European super league with England represented by 6 teams.

I say f**k em. I like what I see as "real " football, and the PL this time round (nothing to do with us being crap or Covid) isn't a barrel of fun. Going to football should be fun. There are 92 clubs in the top 4 leagues. If 10 or 12 of them want to piss off to play Barcelona, PSG and whoever, fine. It shouldn't just be about the pursuit of cash and global domination. I support the Blades because I'm from Sheffield. Not because they win loads of stuff. Football should still be about emotion, "belonging ", and a bit of good natured tribalism. If it's lost that it's screwed, and it's certainly lost me. UTB.

If i was a fan of the big six id certainly not want to be in a Europan League. Away days are long and expensive enough!

All very honourable, but it won't be them that lose out on anything.
It'll be the rest of us

And it's true what another poster has said, where is the room for six English clubs ?
Six English clubs, means six Spanish, six German, six Italian, six French, six Russian.
And that's without the big clubs from smaller nations like Shakhter Donetsk, Ajax, Feyenoord, Celtic, Rangers, Porto, Benfica, Galatasary, Fenerbahce.

I'd love it if our six resigned from the Premier League only for four of them to be placed in the European 2nd Division with less TV rights than the Premier League.

It might suit Marseille, Shakhter, Celtic, Rangers, Valencia, Seville, but our greedy fuckers, no chance.

Also any club playing in a European League should not be able to field any team whatsoever in our Cup competitions.

It’s possible but it’s been an argument for years, however the fact our TV deals are so big keeps the point mute. The TV companies want games, and especially if you’re wanting to encourage Amazon, Facebook and the like to the party you need more not less. Greed will see this off even if Pep is right than an 18 or 16 team league would improve the general quality due to the downtime they’d get. I just don’t think it’s what the public want they’re about quantity.
With regards to a European super league, again I don’t think there’s the appetite in England for it so they’ll need the income from global interests which is possible. However being the biggest boys with the biggest sway in (currently) the biggest financial league in the world will be hard for them to leave and be an equal with everyone else.

Won't be watching that.... Premier boring enough as it is ... just stick a recording on, every match just like the last ... so stale

Why don’t they just say 1 team per city

imagine the fans of the big clubs then.

London Fc
Liverpool FC
Manchester FC
Sheffield Utd fc
And so on

I'm not sure I agree on the quantity thing. The PPV debacle opened a few eyes I think.

The logical move is towards streaming services and things like NFL Gamepass. People want to create their own viewing pattern now, not be dictated to

The so called big clubs fail to see what football is all about ,not just about winning and making a profit as a company.
Competition is the life blood behind most sport and making it an elite only competition kills all the excitement generated by the sport (football).
Unfortunately americans are creeping more and more into football that will definitely spoil things.
One only has to look at american politics to see how flawed it is.Any democratic system that pushes a leader such as trump forward and gets support on the back of 4 disastrous years for america and the world is not a good way
We are in danger of losing the game to americisation, the powers that be need to wake up and smell the coffee.

For us the fans of course we fell in love with the game because of competition, the unpredictability and the romance of the game unfortunately that’s not why people now own a club. Increasingly football is seen as a way of diversifying the portfolio of oil states and as an untapped sports market for American businessmen to exploit. Both those groups are interested in turning a profit we already have two nfl owners in the prem and they won’t be the last. If football isn’t interested in maximising it’s profits itself then businessmen like this will come in and do it but the soul of the game could be lost along the way.

Six English clubs won’t mean six Spanish, six Scottish and six from Azerbaijan. It will mean the 16 wealthiest clubs in Europe, wherever they’re from, and at the moment six of them are from England.

As Neil Diamond says "money talks" and cash will be king in any European super league. The sooner they get on and do it the better as far as I'm concerned.

The big clubs don’t get that it’s the rest of the division that makes it more sellable, the battle to stay up can be as exiting as the chase for the title. A 6 way league would be shit for the neutral fan

More than six of them are based in England.
In fact most Premier League clubs would get in if it was based on wealth.

The one thing that the football authorities should stand strong on though is if certain clubs form a European League, they have become a European club and have no right to play in any English cup competitions.

And if the football authorities are too greedy and weak to ban them from English Cup competitions the other clubs should boycott them until they are banned.

We'll see how wonderful the FA Cup and League Cup are with only six youth teams playing in them

So it’ll be called the Balance Sheet League then? You can only get promoted to it if you are owned by a rich sugar daddy.
On that estimation Wolves would have a good shot at it then?.....But maybe not.

Can't we just stick Guardiola, Klopp and Lampard into a big rocket, and blast the cunts into space?

Fine let them do it, but only on the condition that the money as to be fairly distributed back to all the leagues unlike the current system......

Less games, less money, more competitive.league structure.

According to the paper, Manchester United have been the main drivers of the Superleague, with Liverpool more in the background, so no change there.
It won’t concern me in the slightest, because I’m already 90% done with football (VAR, PL cheating, patacake passing, and the rest), I haven’t watched a full 90 minutes of any match for nearly two seasons - I’ll follow United as per usual, the rest can simply fuck off for me.

I don’t claim to know much about the American set ups but doesn’t their draft system ensure a degree of equality across the leagues where the worst teams get the first pick of the best talent? In theory this prevents a reinforcement of the “status quo” and allows everyone to be competitive at the highest level. Also, the play-offs at the end of the season is knockout competition and further reinforces the notion that any number of teams can take the top prize.
I can’t imagine they actually want to adopt a genuine version of the American model with a draft system etc. I suspect they want a capitalist system where the rich stay the richest and only get richer.
It might actually be good if the top teams fuck off because as others have said, at present they use the threat of a super league as a bargaining chip to bleed more money out of UEFA via the Champs League and TV rights - a sure fire method for maintaining the wealth of the top few European teams (not to mention the damage done to the competitiveness of the lesser European leagues where the same team qualifies every year and continues to fill their pockets).

I’ve heard that the more passionate fanbases are the US college football teams anyway, so they can have their NFL model and do one.

think there might be 2 leagues euro super league 1 and 2 with 12 teams in each league

Amen brother. I’d love to see more balance in football. Wouldn’t it be great to see a Lisbon Lions type team of players who win something having all grown up within a few miles of a city - sadly that will never happen again, but it’s become all so predictable now. The champions league for example ‘the greatest club competition in the world’ has pretty much the same teams in the latter stages every year, and if there is an unusual year like Ajax making the semis a couple of years ago, the team gets dismantled as the best players get swept up by the big earners offering big wages.

For us the fans of course we fell in love with the game because of competition, the unpredictability and the romance of the game unfortunately that’s not why people now own a club. Too true.

At the beginning of the Premiership it was intended to reduce from the original 22 to 21 then 20 and eventually to 18.
That has always made sense to me whether we are in it or not.
Promotion/relegation of two per year from/ to Championship also makes sense.
Seeing what is best for football and not necessarily for the big clubs is what is needed.

Man City can fuck off. Big but traditionally average club who happened to be chosen to be a rich man's toy and now they think they're it
