So, the new season is just around the corner and United finally appear to be stepping up their activity in the transfer market. Depending on which rumour (s) you believe, Shaun Miller, Tony McMahon, Jeffrey Schulpp and Matt Hill could be added to the squad by the weekend. Irrespective of whether they join or not though, I'm struggling to see why some fans are feeling optimistic about the new season because we still look short in a number of key areas.

Goalkeeper - A crucial position that we still can't be sure is adequately covered. I haven't seen Howard play but a quick glance at a CV suggests he's failed to hold down a permanent no.1 jersey at his previous clubs. George Long, for all his promise, looked a long way short of being ready for the first team when Wilson gave him his chance against Exeter last season. We all know how many points Simonsen cost us last season (and before) so it's vital that we have a commanding 'keeper in place. Rumours that we were looking at Tommy Lee don't look like coming to fruition, though I'm not sure he would have been the answer either.

Right flank - Lowton has gone, barring a last minute change of heart Willamson looks set to move to pastures new. At this moment in time, we have brought in a second choice full-back from Walsall (Westlake) to fill this void. Reports are that Westlake has promise but has lost his way. Maybe Danny can help him rediscover his touch but it's not a signing that inspires optimism. Aside from the play-off games, our defence struggled to keep clean sheets in the second half of the season. Ryan Flynn could possibly play on the right wing but doubts remain whether he is going to be good enough to be a first-team regular and he seems unlikely to be amongst the goals like Lowton and Williamson were. Jordan Chappell, who has been on the fringes for a couple of years now, may finally get his chance. We were so strong down the right-hand side last season but at present this has to be a real area of concern.

Centre back cover - A priority for Wilson by his own admission, particularly now Morgan has finally called time on his career. Does the (possible) arrivals of McMahon and Hill, full-backs by trade, suggest that Wilson will draft them in as make-shift centre halfs if either Maguire or Collins get injured. Is Terry Kennedy good enough to be given his chance and could he become a regular if Harry were to be sold? The only option we have is LFJ at centre back which strikes me as being a potential white knuckle ride.

Left wing - For a while now we've lacked pace and guile down the flanks. It would be surprising if we managed to hold onto Stephen Quinn beyond August's transfer window, but even if we did we still lack conventional 'wingers'. Is Erik Tonne good enough? Given that he's been on the fringes and couldn't force his way into York City's side you'd have to speculate 'no', but in brief cameos he looks to have some ability and an eye for goal. Given that we've lost Evans, Willamson and Lowton it's a concern as to where our goals are going to come from, especially as Doyle and McDonald are not famed for hitting the back of the net.

Upfront - So far, only Cresswell, Porter and Coffie are confirmed. I expect Cresswell and Porter to vye for one place with Coffie and, possibly, A.N.Other battling for the other spot upfront. Cresswell and Porter are much maligned but I think they remain decent foils at League One level IF played alongside a potent striker who can fire 20 goals. I've no idea if Coffie will be that man. He's only a baby (just 19) and he represents a gamble. He does look to have lots of pace and power so it might prove to be an astute one but we'll have to wait and see.

Other players who could force their way in are Shaun Miller, who is apparently signing later today. A one-season wonder who has slipped to become Crewe's fifth choice striker last season doesn't inspire confidence for all of his once bright potential. We've also been linked with Jeffrey Schulpp (on loan) who could be a key addition if he can reproduce the goals he netted in a short stint for Brentford last season.

So, all in all, despite some welcome activity in terms of incomings, I still think we're going into the new season with a lot of 'i's to dot and 't's' to cross. We're far weaker without Lowton, Willamson and Evans. We can't be sure that our goalkepper is going to be good enough, upfront I fear we'll struggle for goals as Coffie could be too wild and raw, plus we don't have a good enough supply line from out wide. Of course there are positives - Macdonald staying and so too Maguire and Quinn for now.

I'm struggling to see why some fans are feeling optimistic about the new season because we still look short in a number of key areas.

Because this league is shite.

So far we have lost Lowton, Evans & Williamson.

We look like replacing Lowton with a very good player in McMahon.

We've got a player on loan from the 2nd best team in England to replace Evans. We're still looking at 2 more potential strikers in Schlupp & Miller.

Get somebody in at right midfield and I can't see what the problem is.

Agree with matt. Obviously, we cannot possibly replace Ched's goal - that kind of striker comes round once in a decade (if you're lucky). Anyway, he'd not have been around for us this season anyway.

Lowton - one of those things. A very good prospect but seemed to me that he was stagnating last season. Williamson, if he doesn't want to stay, what can you do? Anyway, I don't think he'll replicate last season, wherever he is.

If the rumoured signings all arrive (and Quinn stays) we have nothing to fear this season. It is a shite league and it's extremely rare that a team bounces straight back from it. Charlton, Southampton, Norwich and Brighton have all 'escaped' because they had teams far too good for Division 3. Wednesday tried to hack their way out, Megson was sacked but Jones did not win them promotion. We handed it to them and they were fucking lucky. (Given the transfer activity in the Championship so far, I think Wednesday should fear 2012/13 much more than us. Watford & Forest are on the march and they'll find going to places like Derby, Leeds, Middlesbrough etc. a teensy bit harder than Exeter.)

With last season under our belt, we'll be far better equipped this time round.

The reason I'm not abandoning all hope like a few seem to be is the fact the team will be relatively settled from last year and the style of play should be the same because the midfield will be the same shape - which proved itsel for most of last season. I still think we'll churn out home wins with the current line up, we hammered a large proportion of the league at home by playing possession football and with KMac signed (he needs to stay fit mind you) we will continue to play like this.

With Collins/Maguire and KMac/Doyle/Quinn and dare I say even Cresswell up front, the spine of the team will be similar.

If Quinn and or Maguire get sold, then this is will obviously impact, but as we stand I think we're ok. The main problem will be goals, need either Porter, Cresswell or Cofie and probably at least 2 of them to be 15+ goals.

Even when we lose Quinn I still feel would be no worse than last season. Keeping Collins, Maguire, Doyle and KMac was more vital than losing anyone else.

We now have a keeper who by all accounts knows how to use his gob, but most importantly if we get Miller and Schlupp we will have a varied attack with alot more options.

My only concern is that we won't see more of our own young players from the academy

I can certainly see how rationally and logically we look a little weaker, at the moment, this season, but it's no reason to hold back optimism. The whole one in one out mentality is limited, by that I mean that even if we replace all-round better players with all-round poorer ones, it does not mean we will be a weaker team or lesser force in the league (I'd say the only factor this doesn't apply to is having a natural goalscorer). The key is getting a group of players that compliment each other in various ways and can develop a common mindset.

Before the season has even begun there's no real point in pessimism, unless you enjoy angst and worry (or support Portsmouth/Rangers).

My only concern is that we won't see more of our own young players from the academy

I think Whitehouse will be back up to Doyle(when he has recovered from his injury) and Chappell will be given his chance if Quinn goes. McAllister will be back up to KMac.

If the predicted signings arrive,I think we will just need a replacement for Quinn (I hope he doesn't go but I am assuming he will)

i think that we should be fine.. last season we were unlucky that there were four standout teams to fit into three places and we all know what happened. the teams from the champs this time are shite and we are the 'only' stand out team and the bookies know it

Very optimistic this season and have been impressed again with DW. Outside of Swindon, MK and possibly Crawley I can't honestly see a huge amount if resistance out there.

Great OP. 10 reasons why we shouldn't look forward to next season.

I'm amazed someone spends their time and energy trying to persuade everyone else how shit something is.

At least BB does it in 4 words (Same owd, same owd). Much more concise - :)

UTB - Top 2 for us this year!!!

Hope Tonne gets a run as well as he's always looked like a potential diamond when given a go. Even in the friendlies from what i've heard

3 confirmed signings. Really glad about the McMahon one.

Miller gets another olive branch to resurrect his career.

Didn't rate Matt Hill but it gives us cover at LB & CB so possibly a good bit of business.

So far in DW's reign he has impressed me with his permanent signings.

Looks to me like we have got replacements in for those players that we lost but I think we still need a bit more strength in depth as we did last season. Having no players capable of covering for McD and Ched and to some extent the whole of the defence cost us promotion. As it stands we are weaker none of the new strikers will come close to Cheds 30 goals and I don't see any significant competition for places in midfield or defence and as others have said the goalkeeper position is a massive worry.
I'll now revise my prediction of bottom half to possible play off contenders if all the signings come good but I do think we are taking a few too many chances on young kids stepping up and players with a history of bad injuries/poor form.

So just who will finish above us if we are 'play-off' contenders. MK Dons will be strong again. They did play some decent stuff last year. The teams that have come down don't look too great.

Only other team imo that may do something is Preston as Westley has had time to sign his own players and stamp his authority on the team.

The promoted clubs don't seem to pose much of a threat, like someone said, maybe Swindon might make a go of things.

Going on that I'd say top 3-4 should be a minimum.

I think we're a long way off being as strong as last year I'm afraid.

If somebody had asked me what were our strengths last season I'd have told them, "we have a lad up front who scored 35 goals, a very strong right hand-side and a big lad in the middle of the park who can control games." Out of those 3 strengths, only 1 is left.

Ched Evans, Lee Williamson and Matthew Lowton were responsible for 54 goals last season and I don't see that we've replaced that.

Ched Evans also chipped in with 12 assists and if Stephen Quinn leaves (and everything says he will) that's another 13 assists and 5 goals gone too.

I think Lowton for McMahon is a good bit of business. I don't think it has made us too much weaker (though apparently he is slightly injury prone) and we've recouped a bit of money to go towards clearing debt (not that we'll notice it).

However Lee Williamson hasn't been replaced at all and when Stephen Quinn leaves we'll have no quality wingers whatsoever. It would be silly to think that Flynn, Tonne or any of the young lads could contribute as much as Williamson (13 goals/unknown assists) and Quinn (6goals/13assists) did between them.

And Evans's 2 replacements (Cofie and Miller) are totally unproven at this level and will have their work cut out to contribute to 50 goals in the same way as he did.

I remember looking back, objectively, after our play-off final defeat to Burnley in 2009 and wondering just how with that side we didn't go up? And I'm sort of doing the same thing again now. We should have been too strong for our divisions on both occasions but due to poor management (2009) and injuries and courts of law (2012) we managed to fall both times.

This year we look short of cover, width, a decent keeper and goals. We look like a team that will be around the Stevenage/Notts.County/Carlisle sort of standard of last year and that's at best. Last year we had enough fire-power to make teams worry about us first. Now I think it's a case of building from the back and being hard-to-beat first and foremost. But without a decent goalkeeper, a decent left-back or cover at centre half I fear we'll not even be that.

I'm not a total gloom merchant as the above suggests, but you have to surely see that we're considerably worse off this time round? My main hope is that there is a drop in the standard of the league which matches our own relative drop in standard, but this is doubtful. I actually think the league looks stronger next season.

I personally don't think the replacements are as good as their predecessors, however I don't think the division is as strong. I'm sitting on the fence a little as to how we'll do. I think other teams have done enough to step up a bit, notably Preston. Sometimes an entire squad replacement works, other times it doesn't. It could go pear-shaped for them, here's hoping!

For us, I think we'll be strong and stable, and that might be good enough to win.

People MK Dons, they have for years and they've always disappointed. Sadly, the same has been said about Huddersfield and last year they finally grabbed their opportunity at our expense. Us, Preston and Coventry for the promotion, in any order. I also see Bournemouth and Swindon giving it a good go, either early in the season or towards the end which will cause us a little short-term pain.

The division is weaker, but so are we. I can see how the signings could well compensate for what's gone, in every area but up front. I hope Cofie and / or Miller are he answer but in all honesty, it's unlikely.

We can play all the wonder football we like, but unless we score we wont win. If we don't get in another striker then I can see play-off's being the best we can hope for.

UTB

Its usual for fans from every club to feel optimistic about the coming season.
Us? well im cautiosly optimistic.
Its a big job to rebuild the team from last season and i hope DW can achieve it.
