Thankd Bergen

As Silent says, that's a good read, particualty for somebody who remembers him making his debut and watched his entire United career.

I'm interested to know whether he does his coaching in English or Norwegian?

By the way, I find it amazing that we have any Scandinavian Blades, and even more so the in depth knowledge you have of the club. After all, most of us are born to the life of misery being a Blade entails, you lot do it by choice :-)

My abiding memory of Mick Speight is of him being carried off during the Boxing Day game in 1979. As I am fond of telling people - I have not set foot in Hillsborough since.

I see Mick's from Upton near Donny. Many years ago I used to see a girl from there. Coincidentally our romance co-incided with the release of what became Billy Joel's biggest hit - Upton Girl.

Good read Bergen.
Brought back some good memories.

Just hits home even more how bad we are now.

Interesting read re Micky Speight.
I had no idea he had been out in Norway all that time.
Totally agree with Micky when he says that John Harris was our best manager and I go back to 1946.

Bet she was more of an Up t'Arse Girl coming from that neck of the woods... ;)

Fantastic read Bergen, thanks and regards to all our Scandinavian supporters too.

Didn't realise he was out in Norway.Tough no nonsense midfielder Mickey and good to hear he's still in the game and to hear about his time at the Lane.
Upton was where Joe Shaw came from aswell...not sure about the girls up there, but I once bought a car from there that was a bit of a Banger.

I think his full debut was in the 3-3 home draw against Man City in February 1972 (the late Alan Ogden made his debut too). We were leading 3-2, there was a scramble in our penalty area, John Hope came out of goal, Francis Lee poked the ball past him and Speight was on the goal line to stop the shot with his hands. The ref awarded a penalty and booked Speight (it would have been a red card nowadays). Lee converted the penalty. Speight played more games in the 1974-75 season than in any of his first 6 seasons (I think Furphy rated him better than Sirrel did) but the hard tackling midfielder's popularity increased during the 1977-78 season and was picked to play in the England B summer tour of the 1978 close season (replacing Woody who declined the invitation due to having a family holiday)

Fantastic read. If I had to name my favourite ever United team it's that one in the photo, and Harris would be my choice. The 3-3 with City was a belter, they were a top team at the time.

I'm filling up....

Mike speaks Norwegian, but I think it's a good mix. :)

Most Norwegians who are into football have an English team that they follow. We've grown up with Match Of The Day on TV every Saturday. The Blades finished 9th in the top division in my first season, I didn't know it was going to be this bad! ;)

But at least we've got Hendos to get over the downs - picked herring? Poor bastard

Once saw Mick play in a reserve game where he was not at his best although did not warrant the abuse and constant criticism given him by the john street terrace know all.

Mick was substituted towards the end of the game and received more abuse from said "expert" as he left the pitch; at which Mick took his boots off and offered them to the "expert" inviting him to have a go as he obviously knew so much about the game.

Quality, genuine Blade! In thought and deed!

I think that's right. His actual debut came as a sub at West Ham on 6/11/71 when we won 2-1 (Reece 2).

Was a good honest player who did the donkey work for others , the unsung hero who battled away winning the ball back and laying it off simply to the play makers, something we sadly have been bereft of for some time

He had a cracking shot that hit the bar before Wendy scored.

The shanks story is great - never heard that one before.
Great read, thanks Bergen Blade

Speight was always a combative, hard working pro that gave his all for the Blades
He was a leader as well and always encouraged the youngsters just getting into the team.

Great to hear how he has been getting on since

first game i ever went to.. its on youtube
micky speight was a really good box to box midfielder who could tackle and pass. we couldn' t half do with someone like that now actually

i recall my excitement having seen mick in his admiral blades tracksuit, cycling to work, midweek,as i was on a bus to holmesfield c.1975. We had a decent team then.

First time we had Admiral kit was in the 1975-76 season and it was a poor season for us. we stayed with Admiral until 1979 and then switching to Hobott
