Agreed. I thought that last week. I dont get to many games and my previous visit when we played Wigan last season we had Hammond, Coutts and Woolford. They were statuesque. However, Coutts seems a different player and Fleck and Duffy are probably the best footballing midfielders we've had in many a year. They want the ball, seem calm and controlled with it at their feet. Its brilliant recruitment from Wilder.

Fleck and Coutts were outstanding again,Duffy didn't have one of his better games and Samir was class when he came on and we also have O'Shea

Is it the best midfield that we have had in recent years?

We have; fleck, coutts, duffy, carruthers, and oshea.

Would our best from previous years get into this midfield? Mcdonald, britton, quinn, williamson, leigertwood, tonge, phillips etc.

I dont think many would get in front of our current crop if any. What do you think?

This could be our best midfield since I remember supporting the blades...

Macdonald and Quinn would be challenging.

P.S. Change your avatar.

Gonna surprise a few next year when in the division above just how good they are.

Starting with our S6 pals. Can't wait !!!

Had we not sold a certain player to Brighton then he would have fit into this side and been lethal.

But I agree that this midfield is the best since Brown and Tonge for me.

Macdonald wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes under Wilder. Lazy and certainly not a team player. One of the most overrated players in recent times.

Murphy is a great shout but i dont know wether he would get in over duffy. Duffy has been unreal. Carruthers and oshea are unlucky that they havent had more game time as they are quality. But duffy has been outstanding.

Ps i thibk I will change the avatar but maybe to a fleck related pic. Best player in the league!

I suppose it's all about opinions and for the fact Monty would be number one on my list I will get shot down.
The current midfield is very good, however here are a few who "may" be better - Colin Kazim-Richards, Michael Tonge,"Oh Lord" Michael Brown,Stephen Quinn,Paul Ifill,Andy Liddell,Stuart McCall,Jagielka,Gary Speed ....... I'm sure there are a few others. If we go back further Cockerill and Currie may even get in this current team.

McDonald (then) would be as good, if not better than Coutts (now)if he had the likes of Fleck etc around him and playing the sort of confident, fluid passing we now see. Saw him on the tele the other day though and he looked poor.
No complaints with what we have now. It's fabulous to watch and makes me feel proud that it's us playing this way.
We've waited long enough. Lets enjoy it!

Monty had so much live and passion for the club. Like others he would run through a brick wall for us. But he never quite had the technical side. Our midfield now I think is technically better than previous years.

Monty nonetheless is a legend!

Macdonald had loads of ability if not more than out current crop but not the manager. I think under wilder he would be unreal.

It is great to watch them play together. All have confidence in themselves and each other's ability.

Gordon cowans would have challenged them for a place but as a unit they gel as well as anything at the moment.
Good times

Cowans and Patterson quality
as was TC,Cockerill was as well as Houghton who we tried to sign and not forgetting Arnott the magic of a right foot, we've been missing a midfield for a long time

The individual ability is debatable but the chemistry and balance is a million miles above anything we've had for a very long time.

And Fleck would find his way into any team.

Williamson and Legs of wood being among our best midfielders of recent years is a horrifying idea. Quinn is probably the only one of those mentioned who could fit in with this bunch (Britton could too in a purely hypothetical sense not based on anything he did for us), McDonald had the talent, but nothing like the workrate to fit with our current style of play. A bunch of old wingers wouldn't fit into this side at all as the formation wouldn't suit them, so not really a fair comparison. We've maybe had the odd individual talent, but the current midfield as a unit is the best in a long time.

Remember when we all wanted a big nasty bastard in the middle of midfield who would win the ball and play a simple ball? And obviously leave something on the opposing player.

Instead we got four or five players who can do it all (apart from score goals).
So it turns out we didn't need big or nasty and that clever bastard Wilder was right. Again.
