That would be great but I worry that our budget for January will only be what's left over from the summer. In which case we couldn't afford all those.

I'd be very disappointed if Wilder isn't afforded a bit extra to spend given what he's achieved so far. It would be a wasted opportunity which we'd probably live to regret.

We should have a substantial amount left from the summer, given the sales of Adams and DCL and the fact that we actually spent very little .........

Its now a test of how much the Board actually want us to get promoted ...... do they have the same commitment as the supporters ??

looking at recent results, I think Leicester are gonna need him back
Oh man, can you imagine old Throat Pass playing in Europe? Guy would get more bookings than the McDonald's just outside Neil Shipperley's house.

Be of good cheer fellow Blades, the single most important cog in the wheel that is Sheffield United is Christopher Wilder.

If anyone will be aware of who we need, and with what level of urgency, it will be Wilder. Can anyone imagine that he doesn't have a contingency for almost any situation that might arise? No doubt he'll have defenders (should we regrettably lose EEL if he returns to Wolves, or anyone else to injury) or midfielders in mind. Given the creative element we have in midfield, I'd love Wilder to sign an enforcer, someone who contributes to the job of breaking up the opposition's attempts at attacking us whilst being able to enable the likes of Coutts, Fleck, Duffy, or Chapman to do what they do best. We have a decent spine in the team, and my presumption is that Wilder won't be in a position to address every area of the team, so if we can keep the buggers out, or at least minimise their threat, then we have enough about us to cause problems. As Wilder has said just after the Charlton game, we need to make our attacking efforts count, show more ruthlessness etc, etc, etc.

Jake Forster-Caskey hasn't been a regular for Rotherham. He might as well be here instead...

I know he's playing in the championship, but if you're ever listen to praise and grumble, you wouldn't want him, toy town wankers are constantly saying he's shite!

Sorry Stretch, I'm afraid you are pissing in the wind if you think Reed is the answer, he seems to go further down the pecking order every week as others overtake him in CW plans.

Natural talent only gets you so far. Reed was MOTM in his last U23s outing: it's that sort of application which will force him back into Wilder's plans but at the moment I'd hazard a guess that he's probably 6th choice central midfielder (Fleck/Coutts/Duffy/Scougall/Whiteman ahead of him). The fact that he didn't make the team for the Grimsby game in the Checkaturd Trophy might mean that Slater and Gilmour have moved ahead of him too.

I think the writing is probably on the wall as far as Reed's United career is concerned. I wouldn't be surprised if he left in January and equally wouldn't be surprised if his destination was Burton.

OK pal. I didn't get to the Vale game. He was their player of the year last year and he always seemed to play well against us for Crewe.

You can't really judge Grant in that Vale game.
We pressed them high up the pitch and basically they were outworked and outclassed.
It's the best I've seen United play in years. We made all the Vale players look non league standard.

That's a very fair point and I agree, wouldn't know who in that case but I guess that's why we have scouts haha, aryibi at chessy is the only one off the top of my head but I think championship clubs will be in for him.
I don't think competing with Championship clubs in January should be too much of a problem. Anyone joining us will know they are likely to be playing in the Championship soon enough. Who's more likely to be in that league next year - us or Wigan?

Always a difficult decision, any signings for me need to be good enough for our push for top six in the championship next season (seriously) if not loans till end of season.

Tufty will go for a centre-back [Whether Eel stays or not] and a goal poacher. No doubt at all. Jake Wright has been superb and great credit to him, but he's not a long or even medium term prospect, certainly not in the Championship.

CW will also want someone (other than Billy and the Eel) who can nick that key goal in the tight games.

Our manager has no intention of standing still. He's thinking about taking a golden opportunity in the New Year and then the August beyond. He has plans for January, and is working on them right now. Quite right too.

Jimmy White's Deadline Day Army...

Hope (and think) your right.

Out of interest, does anybody have any idea how much we could conceivably invest in new signings whilst still complying with the FFP rules?

Now I don't want this to be taken as me suggesting that the players we have are not good enough as that is not the case, I just worry that the 'midfield three' we are playing in coutts, fleck and Duffy are so crucial to our style of play that missing one of them is a worry and missing two is a real issue, and although we have the players to fill in the spaces on the team sheet I worry we don't have the players to come in and continue our current style of play.

Just a thought for January and I'm aware it may not be a popular one as we have already taken one of their players but I think we could do a lot worse than having a look at Lewis Mcgugan at the sty, like I said I'm pretty much certain it won't be a popular suggestion but he's a goal scoring threat from midfield and a brilliant link up man in and around the strikers a la Duffy and could add that extra depth and quality needed to get us over the line, just a suggestion gents, opinions?
FWIW I think McGugan is a terrific shout.

But a partner for Sharp is more of a priority for me, as plenty of others have said.

Just out of curiosity, how would you fit such a player into the team?

We don't need a midfielder....Wallace is going to Tranmere and will play 90 mins of every game before returning to the Lane to propel us to promotion !

He didnt play against Grimsby because he was in Korea with England U20s

Very valid thread, completely agree with the OP. This is my main concern about our side. We have Chapman for the Duffy role and maybe Whiteman can do a job, but beyond that not much. I'd like to see us looking at someone on the mould of Fred Onyedinma at Millwall, but I imagine he'd be one of those "I don't want to move north" types.

We missed the boat by not getting in for likes of Romaine Sawyers earlier in his Walsall career, before his move to Brentford.
