Michael Tonge

Alan Woodward would have been finished by 28 if that's a criteria we're going to use for player selection.
I remember going to the away friendly at York before the start of the 1973-74 season, a Blade fan shouted "Woody has gone grey!". He wasnt 27 then and he went on to win our POTY three more times

Who is next among the ex-Blades to be suggested? Paddy Kenny? Michael Brown, again? Monty? Ted Hemsley? The ghost of Trevor Hockey?

There's a game, I think against Millwall which is one of the earliest home games of the season in the 'triple assault' season. I've watched that triple assault DVD a fair few times but I'm always taken aback by just how fucking good Tonge was/could have been.

The highlights of that game against Millwall are effectively a couple of minutes of Tonge taking the piss. Class.

Only 4 games I have seen an United player get a 10 out of 10 performance. They were TC v West Ham (although his two goals were bit lucky) in March 1975 also v Stoke in April 1975, both at the Lane, Alex Sabella at Deepdale in August 1978 and Tonge v Millwall in August 2002

Doesn't Woody's performance in the 7-0 thrashing of Ipswich make it into this illustrious company?

Woody was superb in that match with his four goals and one assist (headed in by Reece). Along with TC he is my favourite ever Blade but he doesnt run the show in any matches like TC, Sabella and Tonge did until he was given the midfield role for the 1976-77 and 1977-78 seasons. He was consistently superb with his goals and assists. I would say Woody's performance for that Ipswich game was 9 out of 10.

Genuine question...
Is he still any good? Or has his career taken a "Michael Brown"?

Tonge is still pretty decent, he'll do a half decent job in this league imo. But this season I think our summer signings need to be of players with proven quality, the type who could walk pretty much into any side in league one and some of the sides in the league above. For that reason I don't want him back here this summer.

For what it's worth I do think he'll end up in this league but at Bradford City.

Don't get me wrong it would be a backward step and I really don't want him, just wondered if he was still decent.

Re the title of the OP - if the spelling of his name was in the conventional way then would the appropriate response be "LOL"?

Depends what you mean by decent.

He's probably still soft as shit, still makes it look like he's trying harder than he actually is and still runs like he's playing 5 a side with the guys from the call centre. But older.

Cue "could he do a job for us?" discussion (again) :)

256 league starts in his 7 full seasons with us (average of 37 games a season)
118 league starts in the 7 seasons since he left (average of 17 games a season)

He's 32 now. What a waste of a career!

Agree with those saying we should not sign Tonge. He was absolutely brilliant when he first broke into our team though - unplayable at times even against top opposition. It's quite sad how his career went downhill. I think one of the reasons was that opponents just got wise to him as 90% of the time he tried to beat his man by cutting inside.

Tonge, Brown & Jagielka at their best.....happy days.

Is that through injury or due to sitting on the bench in the premiership?
Personally I saw him declining when he was with us so at 32 he must be half the player we remember.
Michael brown isn't even that.

Leeds have also released Rodolph Austin, an extremely strong midfield battler who's also captained them at times. I've seen him plenty of times here in Norway and would be pleased if we went for him.

I said the exact same when I saw he'd been released. Apart from the bit about seeing him in Norway, of course.
