I'd take him back. He's had two years training with a solid premiership side which can only help them man.

Having said that, he was toss at Preston

He didn't feature at all for the clayheads last season, but he's been involved in all three of their games so far, albeit as a sub for 2 minutes in one game, so maybe Pulis is warming to his splay-footed trickery and neshed tackles.

He's been a complete waste of £2 million for them and provided he's on a free, he'd be another nod in the direction of building a team of footballers.

I agree - he could fit into the team and give us some more options - I have to say that Britton showed a tenacious nature on Sat and I think we now need a more attack minded midfielder to get forward more and support the man up front. If Williamson was fit he would be perfect for that job!

He's made a total of 40 appearances since he left us, and only one of those was a Premier League start. He'll either be eager to recapture past glories, or he'll have gone a bit shit. I am leaning towards the latter opinion.

What's all the insistence with signing old players anyway? Bromby and Kozluk were hardly leaps forward, Billy Sharp backfired pretty spectacularly, and I'm racking ny brains to think of the last time we re-signed a player who actually proved his worth. Deane's second coming? Edwards?

There's a post on BM asking if Jonathon Forte is worth a shout?

I reckon that we should go for Forte and Tonge and perhaps make a sneaky bid for Billy Sharp

What does eveyone else think?

What's Tony Battersby up to these days?

Tonge would be interesting. In his latter days with Warnock and in his Blackwell days, he was poor and I was well happy to get the 2m we did for the fella. However, in a footballing side - which seems to be what Speed is going for - could Tonge be a key part of a midfield? A midfield three of Ertl/Monty as the ball winner, Britton as the 'Quarterback' and Tonge/Willo as the more attack minded 'get in the box' man could be OK.

As for Forte, no. He's only just broke into the Scunny team because they've flogged Hayes and Hooper and they've got no-one else. He's patchy to say the least. Not the answer. A more consistent, better version of him, yes.

Agree with both of those points.

Think Tonge could do well in a Speed side and of course we shouldn't bring back Forte despite the excellent goal at the weekend.

I thought we are lacking pace and Speed was trying to address that?

Tonge doesn't have any!

A couple of good speed merchants (pardon the pun) One up front and one wide man will do for me.

The problem is a) finding them and b) finding the money to pay for them! :(

And therein lies the rub. If we can't get these required quick buggers, then look at improving an other area and Tonge would do that. He's a fair option for the left too.

I think ideally Speed would like to bring Tonge in, I remember they played together when KB first came back and were a pretty good partnership. However, I think we have an embarrassment of numbers (not riches) in CM with Britton, Monty, Quinn, Ertl, Williamson. I think Speedo will have to get one of them out of the door before he's allowed to bring anybody in that position baring in mind our financial position.

Personally I'd love to have him back, moreso because of his brilliant form at Derby when he was there. I'd like to see us playing 4-5-1 with Ertl & Britton playing deep, Ward & Yeates on the wings with Tonge just behind the striker, more in a second striker role rather than a midfield role.

hes hardly gunna be tip top if he aint getting the games and unhappy with the situation he was in. maybe a return to the blades will ignite the old passion for football in him. wouldnt be the first and definately wont be the last player the blades have signed that wernt has good has they used to be,

Think people are slightly missing the point here.

In a side under Speed that WANTS to play football on the ground, Tonge would be a very, very good signing. Go ask any Derby fan what they think about him, because they would have him back in a flash.

Again, with our new style of play, Tonge would fit in very well. Far too often under Blackwell and Warnock the ball was sent over his head, yet Tongey was the one unfairly critised.

Would have him back in a flash, under Blackwell I wouldnt, because he would be wasted, but under Speed? Yes, get him in.

Think Tonge's best position these days is just in front of the back 4 in the 'Britton role' so it would be a strange move for me.

He was rubbish and paceless 2 years ago. Please no. Must do better.

UTB

The way Speed was 'bigging' up Treacy on Sat, I wouldn't be surprised he made a bid for him.

Makes Nade look a marathon runner. He didn't look anything like fit for us and he's gone backwards since then. His legs had totally gone after half an hour on saturday, was surprised speed was so positive about him. Thought Mayor, their sub, looked a much better player. Nice free kick though...

Good to see you around Sharpy!

:)

Tonge is always linked with us. Logic being that we could do with improving our midfield. Tonge is a midfielder. Therefore Tonge is joining us. Never any truth in it, no matter what someone's mate says.
