Without Cooper this season, Plymouth conceded an average of 1.7 goals/game and kept a clean sheet in 19% of games. With Cooper, the average goals conceded was 1.21 and they kept a clean sheet in 37% of games.

Here's how his stats compare to Viktor Johansson (and Wes/Grbic):

Saves per game: Cooper 3.3 (7th highest in the league) / Viktor 4 (highest in the league). In the Premier League, Wes had 4.4 saves per game (3rd highest in the league) and Grbic 4 (6th highest in the league). I think it's clear that this stat is not the best indicator of ability, but rather the weakness of the teams overall (us, Plymouth and Rotherham were some of the worst teams in the respective divisions) as they simply faced more shots compared to others.

Expected goals against minus actual goals against: Cooper 3.5 (5th best in the league) / Viktor 2.1 (9th). Wes was -2.9 and Grbic was -8.3 for comparison. A positive score suggests better luck/ability, while a minus score suggests bad luck or a lack of ability.

% of crosses stopped: Cooper 11% (2nd) / Viktor 7.8% (4th). Both Wes and Grbic stopped 5.7% placing them about 17th.

Statistically, you'd say Cooper was better than Johansson, but obviously Cooper was out for a long time with a bad injury [insert joke about how he'd be a good fit for us then]. As others have mentioned, Cooper is entering into the final year of his contract (i.e. the same situation Berge/Ndiaye were in at the start of this season), so there may be the possibility of negotiating a decent price.
well maybe cooper and patterson are wilders preffered option for keeper and not johannsen

Who knows. As long as they can catch a cold then they are an upgrade on the current bunch of keepers. Genuinely, every now and again United amaze me with how incompetent a professional company can actually be in their recruitment. Sometimes' its staggeringly bad. Wouldn't be United though if it wasn't.

Where does the Sunderland lad feature in all this?

There was speculation in 2021 that United were interested in Cooper. When Wilder was asked about Paterson he skipped it saying there will be speculation about many things just maybe Paterson is the smoke screen while talks with Cooper are ongoing

I’m always hopeful

From what I gather there's no money for transfers, it's all loans and frees, so that rules out both Cooper & patterson, looking like a loan goals then.

Goalkeeper 😊

Sam Johnstone second choice at palace. Probably unlikely but worth a try on loan with view to buy
that would be unbelievable business if we could get sam johnstone on loan but think money might still be a problem but its about time we had a competent keeper again maybe johannsen cooper and patterson are all smoke screens if were after this guy 🤔

Buy Cooper in a few years he will be worth much more

So Johansson wins for saves per game (a stat I don't find too helpful), Patterson wins on preventing expected goals, and Cooper wins on crosses. These last two stats are for me the most important, and considering Cooper prevented nearly as many goals as Patterson and his far higher rate of stopping crosses, I'd say he's my preferred choice (not to mention I'd be absolutely appalled if we spend £8 million in the Championship on a keeper!) On the other hand, Cooper came back from a serious injury so that's something to bear in mind.

Also full disclosure, this is purely based on stats, I don't particularly like watching football if we're not involved, so I have to admit that I've not seen any of these play live to see if they pass the 'eye test' (there's probably a few YouTube videos showing they're all world class I'm sure!)

You did mention in the Johansson thread, but things like saves per game are heavily influenced by how shit your team is. Grbic would probably have more saves per game than Ederson

Wes is in the top 5 or so of saves all season

Only thing about Cooper is that he wasn't actually guaranteed his no1 spot at Plymouth at tail end of the season. Admittedly should make him cheaper. But he'd need to be very carefully looked at after such a big injury.

For keepers that started more than 3 games, Wes is the third best in the Prem for saves per game (4.4) and Grbic is the 5th best (4). Maybe we just don't appreciate what we already have? Oh yea, Grbic also let in 8 more than was expected!

Most important signing of the season. This is the worst defence in Premier League history. It needs completely rebuilding. Starting with the keeper.
i think your bang on there and although i thought we would sign johannsen maybe weve somebody better lined up and were never in for him

We need to spend some money I will keep banging on about him. Quality keeper needed get Michael Cooper is the most important transfer needed right now quality keeper for years to come

Need Hecky to come in for the Plymouth job and do a part exchange for all the crap we brought in last summer!

Has anyone actually seen him play since returning from injury, or even since he had a decent game against Utd in the cup lots of years ago?
