Merson says

I said the same this time last week …. but McBurnie being out is a huge blow

That is a fair point and we'll miss his workrate and physicality but I think we can still cause them problems.

Stick McAtee and Hamer behind Archer I say. Try to play through them and shoot on sight, because all 3 can hit the target.

If Newcastle play well or we play poorly then yeah it's entirely possible.

Newcastle have a far better squad overall.

Hopefully we will play well and disrupt them. And fingers crossed resulting in a win. But being realistic neutral or be a Newcastle fan youd be expecting an away win.

Every team we've played so far have been tipped to beat us by several goals but so far nobody has unlike some teams around us. We now though need to move on from being hard to hammer to being hard to beat.

Spot on..

We knew we were the underdogs right!

Think we're already hard to beat.. Now we need to be hard to lose to.

Let's shock a few along the way..

Edit: he's a drunk gambling wank stain, he's gonna get what Roy Keane got at Arsenal the other week..

I'm not normally bothered by media cuntery, but frank skinner, I get a shot at him, he's getting it.

I think we'll get something from it. 1-1 would be my prediction.
Think they'll suffer a bit of a comedown from their away trip to Milan.

I am with you on that and said earlier I fancy a score draw.

It's a good time to play them, but it's a shame we won't have McB. Still think we have enough to cause them a few problems.

Well said lads.

I think some of our wonderful media are starting to wake up to this too.

We are going to shock a few teams this season, and won't get hammered very often.

If I had to make a prediction, I think we will fare quite well against the Citys, Arsenals and Liverpools of this world, but may well get a couple of pastings from someone like Brighton.

I think this will be our first win, to many people are underestimating us. Including the dick Merson

Gary fuckin Crooks , god he really loves himself.
There's no opinion Garth respects greater than his own!

Back to Merson. He's always struck me as being a bit thick.

I'd think a more intelligent pundit, not lazy one would analyse the game as follows:

"Sheffield United pushed Spurs all the way last weekend and under last season's rules would have come away with an impressive win. Whilst they'll be disappointed to have succumbed to fatigue, this isn't a team that ships goals. They have lost to one goal margins in all defeats this season. A win doesn't seem far away. Newcastle come into the game after a midweek game in Europe having not had a great deal of the ball.

This will be a tight game that will be decided by the odd goal."

That's just me by the way, not na actual pundit, but I would have thought that would be more in line with the recent form rather than suggesting Newcastle will come and win by three clear goals. They may do. But there is nothing to suggest that, given City could only even manage a win late on by a single goal.

Two things are true at once:

1) Merse needs a talking to.

2) We probably are going to get spanked.

Hi Stegosaurus here,

I think we will beat Newcastle. Good team, but they have a Footballing dinosaur in charge

Having played with Bradshaw towards the end of his career the phrase ‘those in glasshouses’ comes to mind.
Carls a good mate but I get where your coming from on the pitch especially, but he would also laugh and agree

It could happen but we're yet to have our arses handed to us like that. We only narrowly lost to the Champions League winners and Spurs away. Seen nowt to suggest that the Toon will be the ones who hand us our first spanking, especially at home.

I mean we've conceded 2 often enough, Newcastle on a big high, hardly a result that I'd be shocked by.

Every time I've watched us against Newcastle it feels like they always manage to get under us and snide a win.

He meant away from the pitch, when he came out with his 'issues' at Villa ,it changed the social side for players, not for the better.

I can’t understand where all this vitriol has come from. We’re just trying like any other promoted side to survive, but a punching down mentality seems to exist in the Prem these days. I don’t expect to be welcomed with open arms, but a little bit of respect would be in order.

Fucking hell. His opinions aside, there's some absolutely shameful stuff about his addictions on this thread. I suppose everyone who's made light of his well-documented struggles with alcohol and gambling are whiter than white and live saintly lives?

No wonder that people still hide addictions away when this is the kind of shite that people spout. It's a fucking illness. Would you laugh at someone who had cancer? I bet a lot of these are the same people who'd come out and say how sad it is if he took his own life as well. Some people need to have a word with themselves.

Removing the Blades tinted glasses

Champions league team v newly promoted

To be fair this may not be the worse for McB to miss

They have Burn & Schar CB's, both are more traditional defenders who will be a match for Oli

Hecky sees them in training, but Id consider an Archer & Traore pairing

Reckon them 2 could run rings round the CB's more than McB can win the aerial duels

That could very well happen, don't see what the issue is tbh.
He has made a sensible prediction, but he has arrived at that prediction in the same way as that octopus that predicted World Cup results. This is not an informed decision by someone who has actually studied how both sides play and set up. Like the octopus, he has gone for what looks like the path of least resistance.

If Merson had said a draw or Blades win, would he be regarded as a “really knowledgeable pundit”?
No, everyone except those of a Blades persuasion would say hes back on the ale/gear - as who would predict a newly promoted team to beat a CL team who have just come away from the San Siro with a clean sheet

Problem is some on here cant take off the red & white glasses - they spent £100m on a defensive midfielder and a sub (Tonali & Barnes)

Not sure about 3 goals, as we havent conceded that all season, but an away win is clearly the neutrals choice

That said, (R&W specs on) - were due a win, they are struggling by their standards, Traore to run thro, between Burns legs and slot home for a 1-0 win
