The stats:
To date, our League record v West Brom:
Home: P: 52 W: 24 D: 15 L: 13 F: 81 A: 51
Away: P: 52 W: 16 D: 10 L: 26 F: 58 A: 88
My first visit to West Brom was on 19th August 1989. The magnificent Dave Bassett had just got United promoted from the third tier at the first time of asking and this was the first game of the season (1989-90) in Division Two – now The Championship. On a glorious, sunlit day thousands of Blades fans had travelled, wondering how their team would fare in a higher level. They needn’t have wondered – just over eight months later, United achieved a second successive promotion and would be back in the top flight for the 1990-91 season.
United ‘débuted’ their iconic fluorescent yellow away kit this day. I was sat in one of their side stands, bang on the halfway line (the ‘far’ side when West Brom are on TV) and could see down the tunnel as the teams prepared to take to the pitch. Back then, teams came out separately and United were out first. As they took to the field, a collective ‘What…the…FUCK?’ came from the crowd as they saw United’s colours. We weren’t bothered. It was our ‘statement’ that we were back. We won 3-0. (Agana 2 and Deane) and wouldn’t lose until the eleventh match (at home to West Ham, 0-2) of that season.
On 25th October 1997, United lost 0-2 away to The Baggies in the top flight. Scorer of Albion’s second goal was Lee Hughes – his first goal for West Brom. In 2003, Hughes was sentenced to 6 years for Causing Death by Dangerous Driving.
On 27th November 1999, United played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at The Hawthorns. This Division One (second tier) game saw United in turmoil. Four days before this game, manager Adrian Heath had ‘resigned’ following a disastrous 1-3 home defeat by Port Vale in front of just 8,965. Russell Slade was ‘caretaker’ manager in charge for this West Brom game and – on 2nd December – Neil Warnock was appointed manager and would lead us to safety, finishing the season in 16th position.
19th February 2000 saw United thrash West Brom 6-0 at Bramall Lane. Our goals came from a hat-trick by Marcus Bent and one each for Paul Devlin, Alex Notman and a youngster playing just his tenth game for The Blades – Michael Brown. This top-flight game was our new manager Neil Warnock’s ninth league game in charge.
So that completes my round-up of recent games between our clubs. Anything else? Oh yes. Nearly forgot
. The infamous ‘Battle of Bramall Lane’ took place on 16th March 2002 – just seven games ago in the history of Blades v. Baggies.
…and Michael Brown’s take on events…
