Once again, I’ve done the hard work (so that you don’t have to). I did ‘Memries of ‘ull’ back in November and nowt much has changed since then.

Perfectly predictably, the appointment of Nigel Madkins has seen Hull spiral into a relegation position (how the fuck do they pick these managers?) We last met Hull on November 4th, 2017 when Leon Slutsky was in charge. With The Blades 0-1 down at half-time, four second-half goals by Leon Clarke saw (most of) the 27,466 crowd in raptures as the Blades won 4-1 (our biggest win of the season so far) and climbed into third place.

Full Blades v Hull City records

To date, our League results against Hull read:

Home: P: 24 W: 14 D: 6 L: 4 F: 62 A: 26

Away: P: 23 W: 8 D: 10 L: 5 F: 33 A: 29

The last time we lost a league match at Hull was on 8th October 1983 when The Blades lost 1-4 in the Third Division.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A 3-1 defeat at Middlesbrough on Tuesday 20th February left The Tigers in 21st position in The Championship and, with Burton winning at Barnsley on the same night, Hull’s position in the Championship is looking precarious. A tough March includes games against Millwall, Norwich and Villa (all at home) and March begins with an away trip to Wolves.

Man to watch

By far Hull’s stand-out scorer this season has been Jarrod Bowen with 12 League goals. His last goal came in the 2-1 defeat at Preston on 3rd February but he has missed Hull’s last two matches:

Of course, no mention of Hull at this present time would be complete without Nigel Adkins.

As is normal, some fans will remember Adkins’ tenure at Bramall Lane as ‘not that bad’. I beg to differ. Adkins’ one-and-only season at Bramall Lane (2015-16) came after Nigel Clough was sacked at the end of the 2014-15 season. Adkins was out of work when United appointed him (never a good sign in a football manager) and his one season was tedium personified. Finishing in 11th position in the third tier (our lowest finishing position since 1982-83) with just 18 wins from 46 league games, ‘highlights’ included home losses against Bury, Colchester, Shrewsbury (!), Peterborough and – the straw that broke the camel’s back – a 0-2 home loss to Scunthorpe of the final day of the season.

Renowned for his pearls of wisdom, among Adkin’s famous utterances are:

‘Pressure? You know what pressure makes? Diamonds.’

‘What’s the biggest room in the house? The room for improvement.’

'You don't see the work he (Hammond) does.'

‘Off you go, Dean. Make sure you put the £5k in my coat.’

And some other bollocks about ‘flocks of geese’.

Unwittingly, NA might have created a template for United’s future managerial recruitment. Never Again.

March 1971, the night I thought we had blown our chances of promotion

The teams for that night were; John Hope, Len Badger, Ted Hemsley, David Powell, Eddie Colquhoun, Trevor Hockey, Alan Woodward, David Ford, Bill Dearden, TC, Gil Reece, sub : Geoff Salmons.
Hull: Ian McKechnie, Bill Baxter, Roger DeVries, Billy Wilkinson, Terry Neill (player-manager), Chris Simpkin, Malcolm Lord, Ken Knighton (later to play for Wendy), Chris Chilton, Ken Wagstaff, Ian Butler.

Early in the game, Gil Reece gave us the lead beating Ian McKechnie to a bouncing ball to poke it into the net at the Kop End. Hull (especially Bill Baxter- nasty ex-Ipswich player who had a fight with Bobby Robson in the manager's office after being dropped from a 1st team game-, Terry Neill, Chris Simpkin and Ken Knighton) were playing dirty and we relitiated back. After about 30 minutes of the game, the ref blew his whistle and called all players to the centre circle to ask them to "cut out the rough stuff" but Hull took no notice of the ref's warning and carried on playing dirty. In the 2nd half Chris Simpkin equalised with a powerful shot. Near the end, Ken Wagstaff (always scored against us) got the winner

To add to this..... Hull might have won the battle but we won the war by getting more points than Hull did for the rest of the season and we got promoted. The attendance that night was over 40K

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years and get pats on the back as you pass.

But your final reward will be heartache and tears if you've cheated the man in the glass.

Be true to yourself.

Was at that game. I think today`s man marking has improved somewhat.
Interesting that the Hull players rushed to Colquhoun as soon as Woody took the corner for the first goal but got deceived by the flight of the ball and it went straight to Addison's head. Many teams were aware of Woody and Colquhoun combination at corners so Woody would have aimed for Addison this time and it was good thinking.

That match silent brings back mixed feeling ,we were butchered by Knighton and Simple who got away with some amazing tackles.
The following match QPR was very uneventful and we're losing .2-0 ,looking beaten and dispirited we some how scored twice in the last couple of minutes to claim a draw.
We played like a beaten team in the 2ND half, the Hull defeated really taking its toll.
Woody scored a fluke ( big deflection ) and Dearden won a cheap pen which Hemsley dispatched .That point was the catalyst to an 11 match unbeaten run where we played some great football to clinch 2ND spot.
I'm still of the opinion that comeback at QPR was the turning point as a beaten team came back from the dead.
Them last few minutes resonate with me still after 45+ plus years,a remarkable turn round in fortunes.
Rodney Marsh was so frustrated at the equalizing goal, he shot at goal straight from kick off from the halfway line in discust

Sorry my spell checker is playing games with me again ,it should read Simpkin one of the butchers of Hull at the lane

I was at the reserves match at BDTBL that day and was leaving the ground thinking we had lost 2-0 but there were excited confusing and shouting that made me and my dad go back inside the ground to check the scoreboard at the pavilion and there it was 2-2! Never forgot that moment! The sad thing about that match was Dave Powell's injury and he never played for our 1st team again. He would have done well in the 1st division if it wasn't for his injury

Been a few times.. 2006 when we walloped them under warnock, 2007 with them having fraizer campbell on loan from man united who was gonna apparently gonna rip us a new one and can remember playing them in the cup 2009 when sharp scored for us and they gave an own goal against naughton when it didnt even cross the line, kyle walker also played and there were a load of youngens on bench!

I agree with this.

Just rewatching the Shoreham View vlog - we absolutely hammered them in that game. It sounds obvious given that we won 4-1 but 6 or 7 would not have flattered us in the slightest when you see some of the chances that were saved / blocked.

Granted Hull were woeful but that has to be up there with our best performances of the season I reckon (excusing a certain game in late September).

More please!

Edit - this was also the game that inspired me to start the podcast. Thanks, Hull :)

One of our oldest rivals for Blades of my generation pity it’s a Friday night fixture & restricted away support nowadays . Hull away was always a must fixture , also they provided me with one of the best nights as a B,Ade and we weren’t even playing . Me & my mates amongst the 2k plus Blades at Turf Moor

Burnley 0-2 Hull City May 84 There’s Only One Roger Hansbury
