Following the predictable if disappointing loss at Fulham, this game (followed by home games v. Burton and Forest) take on a new importance. Hopefully, it will see an immediate ‘bounce back’ as was the case in the recent Reading match and could define the final quarter of our season.

This is the third time we’ve met Ipswich this season. I’ve covered the relevant details in ‘Memries of Ipswich’ (just before our 1-0 home league win on October 14, 2017) and ‘Memries of Ipswich Pt. 2’ (just before our FA Cup win.)

Our last meeting was on January 6th, 2018 in the third round of the FA Cup at Ipswich, where a solitary goal from Nathan Thomas secured our place in the fourth round where we met Preston North End.

Our recent meetings:

Full history v Ipswich Town.

We’ve met Ipswich in the League a total of 61 times so far:

Home: P:31 W:14 D:9 L: 8 F:52 A:34

Away: P:30 W:4 D:12 L:14 F:25 A:47

A solid if unspectacular season (like Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy) sees the Tractor Boys in 12th position, a position boosted by a win at Sheffield Wednesday last Tuesday (6th March).

Form Guide:

Just one defeat in their last six League games has seen Ipswich climb to 6th in the current Form Guide:

Men to watch:

Top scorer Martyn Waghorn scored both Ipswich goals in the 2-1 match at Hillsborough – a match watched by just 22,733 supporters (our lowest home crowd this season was 24,409 for the Friday night game v. Bristol City on December 8th).

Possibly worth a mention is Mustapha Carayol. This much-travelled Ghanaian 29 year old recently joined Ipswich (his twelfth English club) and scored a goal in the recent game at Preston North End.

Ipswich 1 (Whymark) Blades 1 (Woodward) in April 1973. My dad heard me use a swearword for the first time!

Not today. He's out injured.

Our goalie, Tom McAlister, our number 4 Ian Mackenzie and TC lurking in the background.

We once scored 7 against them, 1972 or 1973 ?

Steve Faulkner, then!

27th November, 1971.

7-0 (HT 4-0)
Scorers: Woodward 4 - (1p), Reece, Badger, Dearden Att: 26,233

This was our first season back in the top flight when we went the first ten games unbeaten (8 wins, 2 draws) before we lost 2-0 at Old Trafford to that George Best goal...

For me the play off semi in 97 at Portman Road after it finished 1-1 at The Lane a few had wrote us off .

Fucking great day out 2-2 & trip to Wembley ( less said on that one )

Also memorable for me as it was the Mrs 30th birthday and she was very unimpressed that I’d opted for a trip to Suffolk over her birthday celebrations ... sorry love one must have priorities in life

Went to Portman Rd March 1975. Won 1-0. Think the scorer was Woodward from a corner, somebody correct me if wrong. We had Colin Franks at centre half. He did really well, a solid performance. Ipswich fans were baying for his blood. Tough !
SUT coach was pelted wi bricks at Stowmarket (I think), half the windows through and a couple of body panels hanging off. Long way back to Sheffield I can tell yer. Attackers pedaled away on Raleigh Choppers.
Stopped at services where some notorious blades took revenge. Coach driver set off like he'd stolen it until we were apprehended by motorway (well A road) cops. The miscreants were found in possession of some stolen postcards. Suppose it was a fair cop.

Got shit-faced in the Drum & Monkey.
I think there was some football too, may have been a draw......

GOAL - v Ipswich (a) 1.3.75. After 65 minutes United shattered the home team and their supporters by going ahead with a great goal by Woodward. Speight touched the ball to Currie on the left and the England man made ground cleverly before pulling a perfect ball into Woodward's path. Woodward, near the penalty spot, steadied himself and scored with a firm rising shot which touched the underneath of the bar as it went in.

Great stuff. Long time ago. Cheers

I’m behind that goal.
