On 12th August, 2017 in the second game of the current season, The Blades lost 0-1 at The Riverside. The only goal came in the first half when Jamal Blackman was caught in ‘no-man’s land’ allowing Rudy Gestede to loop a header over him. However, the day turned sour right at the end. United won a ‘soft’ free-kick which was loften into the goal area by Duffy and a Middlesbrough defender clearly headed the ball into his own net. Incredibly, the linesman gave offside and the goal was ruled out. This sparked ugly scenes outside the ground after the game:

This sparked ugly scenes outside the ground after the game:

An extended vlog of the day from TheShorehamView.

The opening day of the 2009-10 season saw Sky cameras at The Riverside for this Championship clash. Ending 0-0, both Blades manager Kevin Blackwell and ‘Boro manager Gareth Southgate appear pleased with the outcome.

On 30th September 2006, we beat Middlebrough 2-1 in the Premier League. Rob Hulse put us ahead at half-time before Yakubu equalized for ‘Boro. Phil Jagielka won it for the Blades with a typical long-range screamer.

The eighth game of the 1997-98 season saw the Blades visit Middlesbrough in this Championship clash on October 5th 1997. Having conceded just three goals in the first seven matches, Nigel Spackman’s in-form United won 2-1 with goals from Deane and Whitehouse. We’d finish this season in 6th place and in the play-offs before losing to Sunderland over two legs.

Boxing Day 1994 and a Division One game ended 1-1 at Bramall Lane. Paul Beesley was sent off before Glyn Hodges put The Blades in front, but Craig Hignett ensured Middlesborough a share of the points.

Later that same season (17th April 1995) ‘Boro would finish as Champions of Division One. (Due to a restructuring of the league, they were the only team to gain automatic promotion to the Premiership in 1995). The Blades secured a point in a 1-1 draw with an equalizer from Nathan Blake. Making is debut (and scoring) for ‘Boro was Jan Åge Fjørtoft who had joined from Swindon on 23rd March, 1995 for £1.3m.

He was a regular player throughout the 1995–96 campaign for ‘Boro in The Premier League and, as the Norwegian partnered Brazilian playmaker Juninho, ‘Boro finished in a respectable 12th place; although they had occupied fourth place in late autumn, a disastrous run of form coinciding with an injury crisis during mid-season sabotaged their hopes of European qualification or a title challenge. Fjørtoft had scored six goals from 26 Premier League games.

But the arrival of Italian striker Fabrizio Ravanelli pushed him down the pecking order for 1996–97, and he was sold to The Blades for £700,000 on 31 January 1997. In his final game for Middlesbrough Fjørtoft scored a crucial goal against Hednesford Town in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Boro would go on to reach the final after his departure.

After the Blades lost to Crystal Palace in the playoff final, he played at United until 15 January 1998 (where he had scored 19 goals in 34 appearances), when he joined newly promoted Barnsley to have another crack at the Premiership.

The 1989-90 season would see The Blades promoted to the top flight. On a dank, cold Bramall Lane (20th January 1990) a single Tony Agana goal won this game for The Blades. (Crowd? 15,950)

Middlesbrough’s form over the last six games is hardly stellar – just eleven points out of the last eighteen. However, with some teams having an untimely ‘blip’, Boro are firmly back in the chase for a play-off place.

Men to Watch

Britt Assombalonga is ‘Boro’s leading scorer with thirteen league goals. After scoring 30 goals in 65 games for Nottingham Forest, Assombalonga joined ‘Boro in July 2017 for a club-record £15m.

upload_2018-4-8_9-56-27.png

Second-highest scorer is Patrick Bamford with ten league goals. He joined Middlebrough in January 2017 - after a number of loan moves from parent-club Chelsea – for £5.5m.

Fun fact: Blades legend Brian Deane had a brief stint at Middlebrough (October 1998-November 2001 where he scored 18 goals in 87 appearances). After playing for Benfica, Deano returned to England in a £3million move to Middlesbrough. His second season with Boro saw him score nine Premier League goals, but in 2000–01 the goals dried up and he soon found himself struggling for a place in the first team.

Last away match of 1970-71 season, Bill Dearden headed a TC free kick to put us into the lead shortly before half time. Late in the game ex-Wendy John Hickton equalised for Boro despite protests that John Hope was fouled. No mention of gobbling on kids yet??

Back to the early 70’s for my first match v Boro at the Lane.

1-1 on tv Sunday with Keith Macklin and I think they played in green and black stripes !

1984-5 - a 3-0 home defeat as we found the going hard back in division 2. We were very poor but Boro weren't that much better. The 3rd was a penalty won by one of the most pathetic dives I have ever seen.

1985-6 - United dominated an early season game but could not score and Gary Rowell scored Boro the winner in the last minute. Dark days for them, though - they got relegated that year and went into liquidation and George Gibson had to resurrect them. Boro brought about 100 fans and were averaging about 5,000 at home at the time.

1987-8 - what a difference 2 years makes. A confident Boro side with a number of players destined for better things (Pallister, Mowbray, Slaven, Ripley) beat us 2-0 on their way to a second straight promotion. United never really in the game. We lost the return 6-0.

1989-90: I finally saw us score and win against Middlesbrough. Deano scored the only goal in a poor game.

1997-8: played the midweek after we'd lost to Newcastle in the cup semi. The key moments: Schwarzer dropped a shot and Saunders was in like a flash to net the rebound for the only goal, and Paul Merson missed a penalty with a shot that almost hit the clock at the Lane end. Gazza played for Boro - limping off injured he got a rare standing ovation from Blades fans.

2010-11: effectively relegated after we lose 2-1. That talentless prick Henderson missed an easy header at 1-1. I have rarely been so angry after a United match. Steve Simonsen made an incredibly good save about 2 mins before they scored the winner (Unlikely but true)

Holy crap.. That Fuchs tackle in the 1994/5 meeting is staggeringly bad! It's needs watching a couple of times to take in the full brutality of it.

It's a horrible foul.

There were a huge number of sendings off in our games that season for some reason, including the 4 in one game against Udinese.

Long-time Blades target Hamilton Ricard played for Boro in that game (maybe his debut?), got lots of abuse and was largely crap IIRC :)

Went that game at Ayresome Park in 1971. Poured down all day (pitch was a mudbath as can be seen on that photo). Stood on an open end. I think it was at the end where Billy scored. A good away point that led to promotion.

Let's hope for three points tomorrow and a similar conclusion to the season.

First memory August 9th 1969. First game of the season won 3-0 at BDTBL.

A false dawn as that season ended in disappointment.
