25th March 1980 in the old Third Division. 0-0 and United's team was: 1. Tony Poole 2. John Cutbush 3. Paul Garner 4. Tony Kenworthy 5. John McPhail 6. Paul (?) Jones 7. Steve Charles 8. Pedro Verde 9. Viv Busby 10. Alex Sabella 11. Steve Charles. Crowd: 19,686. Manager was 'Happy' Harry Haslam. We finished in 12th place (below Grimsby (!), Colchester (!), Chester (!!!) and Exeter (!!!), Barnsley finished 11th. The pigs were promoted...:(

Cheers Graf , I knew that I was right on the Pedro Verde call. I get so many flashbacks to my early Blades supporting days and most of the time I’m way out on scores, players , grounds etc. I must have had my scarf tied too tightly around my wrist it’s affected the blood flow to my brain !

UTB.

Understandable, it's way back. The 'Pedro Verde season' (1979-80), we finished seven points off relegation and 12 points off the promotion spots. The following season (1980-81) Aston Villa were Champions of the League, Haslam was acked and Martin Peters came in to finish us off....

I remember my last trip to Barnsley the 1 where they scored with the final mins. Completely expected because this was a defence with cb partnership of collins & mceveley

But to say exiting was chaos is an understatement i dont know what was longer the match or getting out of car park field we were forced into by the police. Who had ***** off during match & made it every man for themselves. Which made everything 2 of 3 times longer if they had stayed & brought some order to it. Because as you can imagine 2 into 1 doesnt go espically derby post match traffic

Mine go all the way back to 1951, when Sir James Hagan gave a masterclass in the art of inside forward play, scoring one goal and creating two of the other three we scored that day.

As reported elsewhere, if this wasn't enough excitement for one day, it was followed by a spot of fine dining at Barnsley Co-op restaurant. Larks tongues in aspic followed by roast ptarmigan, if memory serves.

Or was it Albert Hirst's pork pie ? Well, it was a long time ago......

Can't remember which match but late 80s early 90s, I was much taken by their fans' sophisticated tactical advice to full-back Joe Joyce - 'Kick 'im into t' wall Jur!'

My last ever away game, 1-1 draw under Sadkins.

I announced my retirement from away games after that painful experience.

back in the 80's me and my mate had the 'brainwave' to go to Barnsley on the 265 bus. got there. saw the game.. think we lost.. strolled back down to the bus station (so naive) and whilst waiting for the bus was surrounded by a bunch of Barnsley herberts around 20 years old. (we were about 13).. my mate got pushed into a plate glass window next to some arcade and i was fully expecting a kicking when the 7th cavalry in the form of Dodger (RIP) and the boys (i found out later) came and exacted retribution.. satisfying result in the end :D
hated them ever since..

I remember that amazingly awful stars kit they had, covered in stupid star shapes, just like the tank tops they were wearing that night out on the Barnsley pull...

Not been for years but will be there tomorrow.

It’s amazing how many time zones are crossed in 15 miles.. starting with ‘contemporary’ at Sheffield Midland and entering ‘neolithic’ by Wombwell... I feel like I’m going on a Star Trek/ Dr Who/ Planet of the Apes style journey...

Right here's a very vague recollection of my first visit to Oakwell -

It was very late 70's and I was still at school so me and a mate went on a coach from Denby Sportsman. It was a Tuesday night match and all the Blades fans were behind the goal on the terracing as it was back then and there must have been around 6000 fans on the one end .

Think we drew 0-0 and one of our players seemed to miss a sitter from about 6 yards in front of the masses of Blades at the death.

The player that comes to mind is, wait for it ..... Pedro Verde !!!!? Please someone confirm this or otherwise as old age is doing my nut in !!!

That was my first trip to Oakwell to see the Blades, went with my Dad, in that old wooden stand and sitting directly in front of us, one row below, United's other 'goalkeeper' that season, 'hands like a bucket, leaks like a sieve' Derek Richardson.

Been searching for a video of the Sharp goal at Oakwell in 2008 for ten years now.

No luck.

In the snow, what a moment. Anyone remember that bursting run from Speed who hit the post before the goal?

Has anybody got the picture of Beattie and Sharp celebrating at Barnsley in 2008?

We played in the luminous capital one shirt and it was like sleet weather.

County Cup game, night match at Oakwell in the late 60's I think. 2-0 up but lost 3-2.
Was at that game. 1969/70. Cruising at 2 0 then Barnsley centre forward Eddie Loyden got a hatrick. There was over 20,000 at that county cup game 👍

I don't have many memories of Barnsley the last time I went there I was that pissed I could hardly see the end of my arms and had trouble standing. We did win I think, oh and Morgan caved Iain Hume's skull in.

can remember going to a county cup final at oakwell mid 60s about 200 blades on the ponty end got a bit hairy when barnsleys boys turned up some big lads anall lol
