Memories at Bury

Seen two of the worst ever United performances I've ever seen there.

The first one a league cup tie in 1995 where we lost 4-2 and got our arses handed to us. I was 17 and went over on the train and stupidly didn't check the times of the trains back and ended up having to walk back to Chapeltown from town. The other one was a 1-0 defeat in the quintessential match under Adkins. Went there in 2012 and 2017 where we got 3 sides of the ground and it was a fantastic atmosphere.

I can also remember the 100 point season. A winter night match at home to Bury where we threw the absolute kitchen sink at the but just couldn't score until Ethan Ebanks-Lendell scored an injury time winner in front of the kop.

You have to feel for the fans. They'll be back in some form or another.

Do they and Bolton hate each other to any real extent? They'd do well to merge and form a bit of a powerhouse club in a heavily diluted area, being so close to one another. Too many clubs in Greater Manchester/Lancashire.

Bolton's biggest rivals are Blackburn,or the six fingered dingles to be more colloquial.😁

That awful game was the only time I've been to Bury. What a toxic night. Our players looked and played like they didn't want to be there. Adkins not only didn't have a plan B, he didn't have any plan of any sort, whatsoever. Last game I think that Baxter played for us, after he tested positive to spice or whatever it was. Remember he did an interview afterwards where he looked drugged up to the eyeballs, yet was quite correct in his view on the game.

The reason they won’t is that they know they’ll get out of trouble, although it’s a pig to get out of, the stadium is still decent and will prove attractive, plus Bolton have been a premiership club which enjoyed a few years up in the top flight.

Contrast that with bury, a handful of fans in an old ground, paying unsustainable wages without a sugar daddy to bankroll it.. could only go one way..

On some level the tribal rivalry between the clubs will prevent it happening, even though it’s a rivalry not on the map so to speak, there’ll be a group who would rather see the respective clubs die than merge and dilute their purity..

I think you might be exaggerating the arrogance mate. I lived in Bolton for seven years and find them ,including my missus to be very humble and welcoming folk. Even did a doco for Uni and the Club couldn't do enough to accommodate us. You might be aware of some being arrogant but don't tar them all mate😉. Ken Anderson on the other hand 😱.
 
My first memory of Bury goes back to the early sixties an FA cuptie that took 3 matches to see em off.
A young lad 16 years old making his debut for them in the first match at Gigg Lane.
Up against Joe Shaw and he gave Joe a hard time ,not the biggest of players but Joe found him a real handful ,this Joe Shaw who had strapping six footers in his pocket but this kid really gave him a hard time.
From memory the first two games ended goalless and the third match on a neutral ground ( Hillsborough ) we won 2-0 . Cant remember who scored the goals but I recall Reg Mathewson played in that game.

The young player against Joe was George Jones a strong lad for 16 year old.

It is hard to believe that Marcelo scored a brace, I know.

On my way to Hawkwind's all-nighter at the Brixton Academy in 2000, having returned from a failed hitchhike to Norwich away with the infamous Katrina, I got chatting to some Hawkestra-bound Bury fans and they were less than complimentary about our Neil, suggesting that his wearing of a Blades tie was a regular occurance.

Tim Blake's solo set that night was the highlight for me, as well as Lemmy singing Silver Machine.
 
Only been twice both times for cup games - a 3rd round replay in the snow in late 90s and a league cup game early 2000s. Won them both. Their commercial manager one of the times was Neville Neville, Gary and Phil’s dad. Met Michael Vonk at the game who looked mean and hard; also met Chris Lamar’s who, err, didn’t.
 
As a child of the 90’s, I most closely associate Bury with Laurent D’Jaffo in a monstrosity of a shirt emblazoned with the logo for card shop “Birthdays”.

Always enjoyed trips to Bury. Proper down to earth club with proper fans, who supported their local club instead of being seduced by the Manchester big guns.

That’s one I regret missing. Several of my mates went. One of them still keeps going on about it. I can only shut him up by mentioning I saw them at Donnington with Nik Turner in 82.

I don’t recall there being any animosity between the Bolton and Bury supporters. Bolton’s fans hated Blackburn and Wigan. I recall hearing on the radio some years ago that Bolton were over £100m in debt and that was when they were still in the Oremier League. Rather like the Gordon Brown school of financial prudence.

As it is I can’t see either set of fans being content with a merged club.
 
So sad to see what has happened to Bury FC. I have been there many times to see the Blades over the years , the first time was I believe when John Tudor made his debut . He scored twice in a 2-0 win, and the chant of "Hallelujha King Tudor!" was born. They always struck me a being a well run little club with a nice neat & tidy ground and they will be sadly missed.
 
Was there for the 3-3, not many blades went as it was a Friday night and on sky. Warnock did indeed wear a blades tie under his coat.

Was at same said match queuing up with blades fans was Mr reliable Eddie Colqohoun. The match day program was a newspaper and some blades back of the stand found a wheelbarrow and filled it with paper programs and set fire to em. Remember being half way down the stand shifting quick as this wheelbarrow on fire came flying past
 
Always wondered how and why there were so many football clubs in Greater Manchester, and now you have Salford City to add to mix. Stockport dropped down to the National League North and now Bury have gone. Sad.

They were and the debt increased to about £180m, I think, but the debts were mainly to Eddie Davies, the owner who wrote it off and then gave them another £10m before he died. I think their big problems came from not cutting their cloth after relegation, gambling on getting back into the PL and were then compounded by Anderson taking over using borrowed money at a high interest rate and gambling again to get into the PL.

I thought that was Blackburn? I recall shifting out of the way of trying inferno pretty quickly
