Media coverage of The Blades

As has been mentioned in a few threads around the Morgan challenge......is it time to ban the media from The Lane.

The National papers give us nothing but crap! eg.....The Times!

ITV coverage can be added up in seconds!

The Wednesday Star is a joke!

Radio Sheffield are so crap it's shameful.....although they think they are great. All they provide is a voice for the moaners! Real people have given up ringing in......but they don't realise, or just don't care!

I think we should ban them all......we don't need them!

They need us more than we need them!

I dunno... listening to Praise or Grumble on my way home from work, (it may not have been a Blade, I don't know) - it seems to be who can come up with best excuse for not attending a game? One that annoyed me most was "Oh I didn't go to the game Seth, what with having to pay a mortgage and everything, I can't afford it" - FOR CRYING OUT LOUD - THEY WANT YOUR OPINION ON THE GAME NOT EVERY EXCUSE IN THE BOOK ABOUT WHY YOU DID OR DIDN'T GO!!!

Who's Who book - section on James Shield. The guy who can barely get a player's name correct or the correct team.

Calendar - we exist if there's a MEGA story, but as for coverage, blink and you'll miss it!

Imagine a Lane without media.... there'd be no highlights of goals, there'd be no interviews with the players after the game or with the manager, little transfer news - and there'd almost certainly be no rumour mill!

It is always fun being a Blade and never controversial Not!!! Remember we are at our best when our backs are aginst the wall, its always been like this and always will be.

I have stopped listening to football heavan, its the same voices spouting the same rubbish, I still listen to praise of grumble so as to get the managers take on the game. The rest of the media I ignore.

Things said in the media are very borderline.

I've already stated the challenge looks bad.....but only Morgan will know whether it was intentional.

If this follows through to the courts we will end up with a no contact sport in the end!

Can I reminisce??

A long time ago as a young lad stood at the front of the kop, a real kop with atmosphere, I saw a really bad challenge on a great young keeper by the name of Tom McCallister. A young keeper who still in my memory is one of the greatest keepers we've ever had.

A certain Rodney Marsh, great player, unfortunately tried to take the ball from his cluthes in such a way that broke his leg. Tom was never the same player when he came back.

It was a bad, sad, and terrible challenge!

The press only reported the broken leg.

Rodney Marsh is still a legend to this day.

The young lad is now older and wiser to what may happen and the challenges are still there.

As I've said only Rodney or Morgs will really know if they were playing the game or the player.

The press these days are always after controversy!

They won't use the fan sites, for a number of reasons. One is as you've said, that they won't want to see their revenue drop. Another reason is that independent fans sites don't always toe the party line on all matters.

You can't say that about the press... even the local press. All they care about is keeping their jobs/selling their papers.

Across the media in general, news reporting has gone and been replaced by sensation reporting. Personally I think that the media coverage around the Blades is more negative than positive, but then isn't that the same with all things???

Radio Sheffield? Locals with a real understanding of what the club means to fans and how it should be reported (Bob Jackson, Peter Crabtree) replaced by media whore wannabes eyeing Radio One or TV, with no interest in connecting with the community.

The Star? Is, was and always will be a day before Thursday paper. Save Our Owls? It will return.

Calendar/Look L**ds?? Both based in West Yorkshire, both heavily biased to that region in their coverage, both hate the fact that Yorkshire's No. 1 hasn't been their favourites for quite a time.

National Coverage?? Minimal to non-existent. Under Warnock there was a good bit, but with his manner/attitude/style much of it was at best antagonistic and at worst just plain destructive. We may still suffer a little bit from that legacy, hence the total lack of Championship coverage.

I was at the Lane the night Rodney Marsh broke Tom MacAllister's leg. The challenge much like the Morgan one, looked bad, but you could never decide if it was intentional or not. Difference was that it warranted a paragraph in the papers the next day, rather than constant repeats on national television, quote and counter-quote on every radio and television station, newspaper and a million different internet sites. As stated above, the bias against SUFC has always been around, difference now is that it is more visible, accessible and geared towards finding something to make a sensation.

For all the technological breakthroughs and improvements since the early 70s (when Marsh did that at BDTBL) has it really made for a better quality of coverage?? Has it bollocks!!
