Our star player of the season made an error last night but he owes us nothing. Since he moved to central defence he has been excellent, as was Basham too last night incidentally.

The penalty was an involuntary reaction and probably arose because Jay appealed with raised arms for offside when on the turn and that served to disorientate him. Soldado surprised him by getting a foot to the ball and when it was hooked back the arm movement was pure reflex. Without the appeal for offside, the turn and the surprise of their player retrieving the ball, McEveley would have been more composed.

These things happen.

There's little doubt he's been surprisingly excellent this season.

That said, he did struggle a touch last night for me. Was very panicky on occasion, kept players onside every now and then, and it was undoubtedly a mistake for the goal.penalty.

You're right, he owes us nothing, but that doesn't make him immune from criticism.

Hardly Jagielka-like was it? And just goes to show how excellently United concentrated on the job in hand last night...and the fine margins etc etc...one wee lapse and you can pay for it. Pity to not take a 0-0 back home but hey, still in it!

Who says he owes us anything ?

My Lord, at no time has it been alleged that Mr. McEveley owes anybody anything. If you feel that by stating he doesn't owe us anything, that in fact I imply that someone has testified that he does, then I submit to court that this was never my intention or that of our manager Mr.Clough who said the same thing in his post-match interview. I hope your honour is satisfied that neither of us bore any malice to the man and hope the jury can expunge it from their minds. Thank you m'Lord.
