I've just been looking into Di Matteo's managerial record and he's notched up some very impressive stats:-

Di Matteo P135 W67 D30 L38 Pts 231 Avg 1.71 W% 50%

Encouragingly, both his sides have scored plenty of goals and almost as many away as at home.
That indicates to me that he likes to play attacking football and doesn't go down the negative "sneak a goal" route.

I'll be amazed if McCabe manages to persuade him to take us on but he's now officially gone ahead of Hill and Tisdale as my number one (realistic) choice.

It sounds that his management style might mean he needs a number two who is closer to the players.

Would someone like Hodges bridge this gap? Great at spotting kids and working with the academy, he would work well with Pembo and has a good academy record, but he has also worked as a first team coach.
Sounds like a perfect fit for me, that might work, depending on if RDM and Hodges can work together.

Incidentally could the Craig Short rumours fit into this structure? Personally I'd prefer Hodges due to his record.

If we get him he should be allowed to bring in his own number two, which presumably would be Eddie Newton.
It never works when you try and impose backroom staff on a manager and he's probably never even heard of Glyn Hodges.

Those comments were all made in April 2010, so it wasn't a "Road to Damascus" style conversion from McCabe last night.
What those comments indicate to me is that McCabe was happy with the style of play while ever we were winning.
He's advocating more attacking, entertaining football and we can all agree that we want that.
The hoofing/passing debate is as ever too simplistic as there are many shades of grey in between.
We LOVE attacking/scoring/winning would be a more accurate representation of most fans and The Chairman's attitude.

That argument will not prevail, Vas. It's a recipe for perpetual mediocrity. Don't appoint a manager who favours proper football because the players are incapable. Get an upanatem man in to recruit more hoofers and plodders. When you sack him don't bring a football man in because the players are incapable....and so it goes on: A vicious circle made of excrement.

Only 2 and a half seasons experience at 2 clubs who were already doing well. MK Dons were riding on the back of a promotion and WBA largely kept their premiership side together after relegation and had been playing quality football under Mowbray.

No record of having turned a team around, no record of bringing young players through and little experience as player or manager of life at the bottom.

Admittedly, he's a better bet than many of the no hopers and has-beens being bandied about but I think Keith Hill, S'OD and a couple of others are much more likely to be successful in our current position.

Nursery school terms to explain how football can be played. The older, more sophisticated realise that nothing is as black and white as this and shades of grey is more applicable. For those needing this shorthand it's explained as:

(a) you play football by kicking it as far as possible up the field, or (b)you tap it to your own players and move it forwards that way.

There are no guarantees, Barney. If we were to look purely at track record/stats, we'd never employ any of them (that we could afford). As far as I'm (and many others) are concerned, RdM represents an outstanding opportunity to finally break away from the media perception of our club. He's one of the first wave of respected foreign ex-pros including Zola, Klinsmann, Poyet etc. who broke away from the British sterotype manager (all bawling, initials-on-tracksuit, 'got mi badges' types who have had their day) A smart (both cerebrally and sartorially) bloke who has a past with Italy and Chelsea. If we appointed him, Martin Samuel may learn to like us and Wendy would puke (and that's good enough for me ).

So get him in, let him bring in (within reason) his own people, but try to elevate Pembo to something that doesn't interfere with his Youth work, but promises future progress nearer to the first team (after all, no point getting the branches right and chop off the roots).

Have to agree. Although I don't really feel any of the so-called quality teams came to Bramall Lane this season and showed particular class. If the cupboard was bare and they had to go above and beyond to get Billy and pay Killa to sit on the bench then there's not going to be much room for Donny to strengthen in the summer. Barnsley will be going down our route of trimming excesses to attract a buyer so will struggle too.

As for hopefully getting RDM, he's about the only name out there who we stand a chance of getting who I feel would make an immediate impact. Already have my ST, but can see he'd bring a few back into the fold.

I suspect the We :heart: Hoofing Brigade are silently sulking in the corner. Me? I'm cautiously doing cartwheels. What an opportunity to repent our hoofing sins and find football redemption.

I am less concerned with form than substance given the team's current predicament. If we can play like Barcelona or Swansea or Doncaster or whoever whilst doing well, great. If we play like United circa 1989 and do well, that's great too.
