Back to who we are – I always feel so much more comfortable when Sammy Long Throw starts. Bindon has been transformed from boy to man this season – like McAtee before him (and the Kiwis know how to grow tough motherf…s); Jairo back (alongside Blaster), and Muppet (remember Wilder after Leeds v Villa) Pat leading the line with undoubted class. Bindon’s goal a replica of Mark PintaGuiness, Gus actually punishing a defensive cock-up and Big Pat keeping beautifully in line twice before guiding it in – game over.

As usual, Graph 1 compares our progress against 3 benchmark sets of results. I've taken each of our 46 matches and created 3 sets of results to achieve 3 points totals, which should approximate to Automatic Promotion, Playoff Certainty and Playoff Possibility. My benchmarks take account of who our opponents are each week.

Compared to my benchmarks, on 26 points we are now 10 points behind my Playoff Possible line (and 9 points behind “The Wall” currently in 6th place). End-of-season 6th place points, in particular, do vary significantly from year to year though. However, the stats would say we’ve played well enough to have earned 4 points more - and 6th place on xg results is only 6 points above us, so most of those above have more points than their performance justifies and we have slightly less. Looking at the League Table below, we still have the top 5 clubs to play at Bramall Lane, so it’s in our hands to pull a few of them back towards us. In our last 8 games we have improved our goal difference by 12 (-15 to -3), and that could be crucial at the end of the season.

compares this season against some recent Championship seasons. These earlier season results are the results from the same game day – not the same opponents. The comparisons are fairly self-explanatory. My main observation from Graph 2 is that after 22 games Hecky (post Slav) had 32 points (after an away win at Fulham) and then went on to 75 points, 5th place and the playoffs! So we’re 6 points behind Hecky 21/22, and we probably need to beat his strong rest-of-season performance by 3 or 4 points to creep in.

I haven’t included any detailed stats tables this week, as footballxg.com have gone to a charging model – so I’m getting familiar with footystats.org! However, we are now only about 3 behind our xg goal total with Ings (-3) and Sydie (-2) being the biggest culprits.

So, away at “The Goats” ( if you’re a Chester fan) and Stoke, and then home to Leicester on New Year’s Day with a ridiculous 1730, and no late transport, kick-off time. None of them in great form at present – 5 points minimum, but hit a 7 point target and we’re on for another Wembley let-down!
