SHEFFIELD United today denied they are poised to hold talks with Australia international Mark Bresciano.
Distancing himself from reports that Bresciano, who is valued at around £4 million by Italian club Palermo, is among the names being considered for moves to Bramall Lane, Kevin Blackwell, whose side returned for pre-season training this morning, revealed that he is unlikely to embark on a major spending spree until all the options at his disposal have been thoroughly assessed.

United manager Blackwell recently travelled to watch the Socceroos' World Cup qualifier against Iraq and claims his presence in Dubai is probably the source of the stories.

Ostensibly, the purpose of his trip was to monitor the progress of United midfielder David Carney, one of several players Blackwell wants to watch during next month's friendlies in Hungary, Belgium and Holland before confirming his first-choice 11 for the Championship opener at Birmingham City on August 9.

But The Star understands Blackwell was also keeping tabs on another member of Pim Verbeek's squad.

"I keep hearing all of these names being banded about," the United manager said. "To be honest, I've never even heard of half of them.

"I know about the lad from Italy (Bresciano) but the figures being quoted are way beyond.

One player Blackwell is definitely trailing is Wigan's David Cotterill who impressed on loan at United last term.

Blackwell has also expressed an interest in Manchester United's Lee Martin.

Shame :(

Shame.
Signing someone of His stature would send a clear signal to the rest of the league.

Hopefully its all just a smokescreen.

May be true. May not be. Will have to wait and see.

Negative Blackwell I think. surely this is a player we need to FINALLY give us a good central midfield. Oh well, I suppose we have got tongey and monty.

He's a winger isn't he?

Ive got us down to need a center half, 1 winger either side and a central midfielder

we need 2 centre halfs. another cover and a partner for killa. as much as i like morgan hes getting on.

we need a canter midfielder who creates stuff and a winger.

"Bresciano is one of Australia's most talented footballers and has a renowned eye for goal. He usually plays his football on the left side of midfield but can also play as a forward and in the central or right midfield role. Bresciano is a versatile player who often assists in both attack and defence and is also a set-piece specialist."

This is on wikipedia but he has been playing in central midfield for the socceroos in the world cup qualifiers.

Well he seems to tick all the boxes in my opinion, what do you think?

I agree Robbie, it would be a coup and i just added the wiki thing if anyone wanted info. I can't see it happenin either

The price now stands at £5million apparently...
