I don't know the ins and outs of how a transfer works but wouldn't you ask the player if he wanted to move before you start negotiations with a different club?

Maybe he didnt want to move because of wages & it broke down?
Or possibly he sent his agent to Barnsley for a scout around & he didnt come back with good news.

In all seriousness though I suggested him last season. He would be a great addition to us but maybe NC sees Baxter & Trotta as too similar?
