Just booked train for 2 adults and 4 kids £38 return all in with a friends & family railcard, booked on early train and will take kids to national football museum and make a day of it, looking at around just over £100 for a full day out.

Told my 7 year old girl last night that she was going to see the Blades in her first season at Old Trafford, her face was a picture and well worth the money in my eyes no matter what the result oh and her first away match..

Trains are going to be a nightmare, especially coming back after the match. The last train is 10.28.

The Trans Pennine trains are normally packed on a Saturday anyway with people going to Derbyshire, Manchester and the airport. East Midlands Trains also have a few longer trains that are also cheaper. Staying in Manc overnight is expensive too - hotels always bump up their prices when Man U are at home.

£41 each for a return from t'Smoke. It's going to be a bloody expensive day out to get bored to tears by Louis van Gaal's 'football'....but I'd not miss it for the world. This season's Aston Villa?

I've just been trying to book a hotel room for June next year when we go to see the Stone Roses at the Etihad and some of the prices are absolutely ridiculous. It would be cheaper to get a taxi back to Sheffield.
We once went over to Manchester for a gig on a return train ticket. When we got there, there was a sign on the platform saying that due to line maintenance the last train back to Sheffield was 10.30. The gig finished at 11. Shit.
We trawled round trying to get a hotel room and after speaking to loads of owners the last one told us "you've no chance anywhere, Man U are at home".
We ended up getting a taxi back to Sheffield which was £80 (between 4 of us was not too bad). This was some time ago now, I wonder what it would cost now?

I'll drive you for £100

Never mind this game, trying to work out Wigan will be fun given I don't drive

I booked some rooms as soon as the tickets were announced Park Inn by Radisson Manchester City Centre for £109, maybe one spare if you are still struggling and what night you are looking for??

Hope you and your family have a good one, yamyam.
I'm still trying to talk myself into going. I can't really justify it but then I might have a last-minute rush of blood and just go for it!

Booked a room now thanks at the YHA Castlefield. Not as bad as it sounds. Free parking, free wifi, buffet breakfast, bar on site, 10 mins walk to Deansgate. Private room with ensuite shower room. Just haven't told the Missus yet that it's 2 bunkbeds!! :D

Cheers mate, nice avatar by the way. We're going on the Saturday but I need a family room? Taking the Missus and 2 kids.

When we had proper trains, the 0210 parcel train always had a coach (with compartments) attached for us night owls coming back to Sheffield from Manchester. That was always the one after nights out, bands and North Western away games. Shame that was stopped really.

Mind you, waking up in Cleethorpes at 5 in the morning actually got me further from home and closer to domestic trouble, as I dont think the missus never quite believed the old 'overslept on the train and woke up in Cleethorpes' stories...

The Gardens on Picadilly Square is a decent option
