Just spotted this image of the old Maine Rd and I think it looks great surrounded by grid terracing and mismatched stands.
Which away grounds do you miss the most that have been replaced by identikit plastic bowls...and does anyone actually prefer the newer stadiums?8C5783D2-EE5E-4685-B61D-0930D1C1712B.jpeg

I went to Maine Road when we stood on the Kippax (side) and also when it looked like this.

In this, its last manifestation, I thought it was about as bad as a major ground got, Man. City completely cocked it up especially compared with their neighbours. Last time I was there, I sat in the stand at the left hand side, my seat was screwed into a piece of concrete where a gangway should have been or something daft, and the big new stand was completely out of scale and unattached to the rest. Man City do look like they did right by moving to a new one and its quite unique (though I haven't seen a match there.)

Not quite the answer to the question you put, but I really like Notts County in its former state, it probably hadn't changed since 1920. Newcastle United was interesting as well before they built it so tall, It had concrete crush barriers.

I never went there, but I used to love The Dell, just because it was so weird and inadequate.

the old version of the Hawthorns (home of the Throstles) holds good memories.
and to compare with Swanny's photo, this is the 'original' Maine Road, for me, they just made one mistake after another every stand they half built .....

"Mind yer car Mister?"

£5 very well spent.

Can only think of Coventry's old ground, Highfield Road, so much better than the Ricoh. It actually had people in it.

Really liked Highfield Road. Only a kid but remember a great atmosphere and felt so English. Huge shame.

Liked the north east ones, Joker and Ayresome Park especially, what I call proper grounds. Of the local grounds quite liked Millmoor, the Old Show Ground at Scunny and Boothferry Park.

Roker park was a great away day, was like the crystal maze after the game, every street around it was the fucking same, endless terraced houses. Remember Blades running them, them running us it was all mishmash of red and white and no one knowing who the fuck was who.

I don’t think Mark Hughes appreciated its inadequacies - remember his phantom goal that hit the advertising hoardings and bounced out - ref didn’t give it

As good as they were you can keep Maine Road, Highfield Road and The Dell for me.
Growing up as a lad my early away days coincided with our demise but one away will always stand out more than any other. How sad is the bottom picture. To think of the unbridled joy thousands of us Blades had on that “field”.......

Almost no trace left unless you know where to look today
