I need Silent's help on this , but I remember Woody smashing one with the outside of his foot from a looping ball from Salmons .

It must have been from at least 35 yards and I think it was in a cup match against York City .

GOAL - v York (h) 5.10.71. Salmons making a despairing run down the left, saw his shot deflected into the path of Woodward in the inside right position. The ball seemed nearer his left foot than his right foot, but the winger improvised a stupendous right foot volley from 22 yards, which swerved high into Hillyard's left hand corner.

Gareth Taylor against Forest at the Lane was from some distance, it won us the game 1-0.

I was at the dell to witness zico lake’s strike and remember someone shouted shoot as the ball dropped to him. Me and a couple of friends instinctively ducked as we thought it would end up in the terrace with us!!!. Needless to say we celebrated wildly.
Jags goal against Leeds is up there also.

Didn't TC score a volley at home around 73 or 74?

Bristol City (?) or another lower league team in the FAC?

Or have I made that up and it's another sign of my rapidly approaching senility.

The recent thread on goals from outside the penalty area got me thinking about the outrageously long-range goals we have scored. The two I remember are Graham Shaw from the half-way line v Portsmouth in 1960, and Deane v Liverpool lobbing the ball in from about 45 yards in 1992. Does anyone remember/know about others from similar distances?

May have already been mentioned; Len Badger from halfway line in the 7-0 home win versus Ipswich. Laurie Sivel (sp*) was off his line and quite short in stature and our Len spotted the opportunity and floated it straight over his head. Can't remember the year. Silent Blade may be able to help.

Yes, seemed to be a 40 yarder. Not sure if it was from a longer range than TC's v Liverpool. Also never forgot his 40 yarder that beat Peter Shilton but the ball crashed against the bar in the 0-0 draw at Filbert Street in April 1971. Both Leicester and Ipswich games were televised and I would love to see them again.

Bristol City in 1975 FA Cup was a shot from outside the box. TC used the outside of his right foot and the ball swerved past keeper Ray Cashley. Lane End it was

Didn’t Harry Maguire score a long range effort at Notts county, top bins too.
Was it nuddy rolling in a long range effort v Cardiff. Think we won 5-3 nuddy hat trick I think

John Matthews v Oxford late 70's early 80's. I'm getting old.

I wonder if this is the same goal I was going to post. At the Lane. Scored at the Lane end. Hit centrally with the outside of his right foot. In my memory it swerved out to somewhere near the left touchline before Nelinho-ing (Google it kids) all the way back and into the net.

Not sure how far out it was, but as for actual distance travelled I'm pretty sure it cropped up in a GCSE circumference of a semi-circle question a few years ago.

steve cammack vs Leeds 1974
at least 40 yards!
(gets a yard further every time i mention it) :D

Greg Halford's at the BL end way out from the left, only about 30-35 yards out but the way he hit it is what made it a cracking strike!

Against Ipswich around 2008/09 or 2009/10 and we won.

Geoff Salmons scored one from just inside the oposition half in front of the John Street stand (Kop end) but I can't remember who against!

Peter Ndlovu scored from quite a way out in the 5-3 win against Cardiff in 2003-4 season.

Yorkshire TV 'lost' the tape of the Ipswich game. I wonder how many games they lost of Leeds turning someone over?

Peter Ndlovu scored from quite a way out in the 5-3 win against Cardiff in 2003-4 season.

Yep, that was miles out. Bounced in like a Barnes Wallis special if I remember rightly.

That game was notable for having all eight goals in the second half. Ndlovu got a hatrick, Tonge and Richard Langley scored a free kick each, Robbie Earnshaw got a couple and Jack Lester scored the goal of the match (shades of Gascoigne against Scotland).

Me and thee must have been standing side by side on that day, crushed into that godawful pen in their away end. What a shit ground the Dell was. That shot was hit like a fucking rocket and as soon as it left Lakey's boot it too two or three swerves on it's way past Flowers and was heading straight for me and my missus. I remember us going fucking bonkers! What a fucking GOAL! I can remember being at Southampton station later with us going one way down to Fareham and the Blades fans on the other platform singing "Let's all have a disco!"

Fucking great game. Shearer and Le Tissier in their team as I recall. We fucking mullered them with a typical battling, won't be beaten performance on a shit pitch in January (I think)

pommpey
