Ah you like real ale, that'll do for me lad (sir), mind you I've forgotten what the inside of a pub looks like not been in one since 2019.

I was looking at something to do with a club I have a soft spot for - Workington, when I noticed a familiar name from the 1960's, Mick Heaton. I thought, he used to play for us, remember him in the 1968/69? team photo.

I then found a very interesting and poingnant link to him. A good read.

His bad luck at Bramall Lane was to be a natural right back at the time that his contemporary and friend Len Badger was proving to be a class act in that position. Badger and left back Bernard Shaw were the England Under 23 full backs. Badger hardly missed a game for us for the best part of a decade.

After Shaw was transferred I saw Mick Heaton play a run of games for us at left back and he was a useful player but they then moved Ted Hemsley back from midfield and he made the spot his own.

Heaton gave his all when playing.

My dad was born in Cammell's Row in 1930 and lived there until the houses were demolished in 1960. His grandparents and their 5 children moved in there in 1920 or 1921 and the former occupants were Mr and Mrs Pendleton. The wife had murdered her husband before committing suicide one night in August 1920. Think I will be able to get more info when the 1921 census will be available for public viewing next January

Yes I can imagine it is Bert, a few years ago I was persuaded to go to Arena to watch Ice Hockey, god I was bored rigid.

Agreed. I've been to Baseball in US, Korea, Japan, Italy, Australia. (Also followed the GB Team through a tournament in The Netherlands). Good way of "keying" into a country when you're traveling.

Bert was in New York 18 months ago, there was a big game on but it was £80 a ticket so he didn't bother.
He's used to paying 3p in Cuba and then watching the top international players going home on their bikes or in a horse and cart.

That tournament in The Netherlands, we turned up at one GB game. To find it'd been switched at very short notice. To accommodate a game that was going to be shown live on TV. I went to the Tournament Office at the Stadium to find out what had happened & explain "the circumstances". They didn't flinch. Immediately got one of the sponsored cars, with the tournament logo on the side, & a driver to whisk us to the town where the game had been switched to. The driver was instructed to make sure we got in for free.

I had a couple of mates from Leasowe and Seacombe. They were known to us as 'Scouse' and 'Scouse', because of the way they talked.

It's a bit like if you say you're from Sheffield, outsiders adopt a generic (generally North) Yorkshire accent which has none of the inflections we kno as uniquely Sheffield.

So it aint offside lumping the hubcap stealing shower of dolers in the same miserable la-de-fuckkkkin-da bucket

Anything outside of the city boundary of Liverpool is regarded as 'wollyback' to them, save that the real woolybacks are from Widnes.

Without wishing to burst your bubble, the Accrington that we beat in the play-offs in 1893 was an entirely different club to the famous Accrington Stanley. Accrington FC who we played, were formed in 1878 and resigned from the league after we beat them. They folded completely in 1896. Accrington Stanley were formed in 1891.

Years ago I went to a game between Baltimore Orioles and Seattle mariners about 7pm ,settled down got pissed had a couple of hot dogs ,great night. At the end about 11 ish Baltimore won and we prepared to go ,but everyone stayed in their seats ,apparently the previous night they had been rained off and it was double header ,finished about 4 in the morning.

I know him through the greyhounds I had Hillfarm just down the road from the Masons for 12 years he lives at Marsh Lane now but he lived as a kid on Stonelow he used to go to the Lane with Sharpy and Mick Cardwell back in the day

The uniqueness of Bramall Lane doesn't stop there. It is one of only two stadiums in the world that has hosted an England football international match, an England cricket test match and an FA Cup Final.

The Oval is one of two grounds (Bramall Lane in Sheffield being the other) to have staged England football and cricket internationals and FA Cup finals.

I've seen Aussie Rules Football at the Oval - Fremantle Dockers v West Coast Eagles in 2005. My ex wife was West Australian. The boozers that day were a who's who of country Western Australia...

I’ve had a look through a couple of books and can find no record of League Football being played at The Oval.
The records show that along with cricket and football, England have played rugby union at The Oval and Baseball was first played there in the late 19th Century.

Bramall Lane will of course add International Rugby League to its history when England play Greece later this year.

Re earlier discussion of multi-purpose stadium, another back to back stadium is the Cardiff Arms Park site which has had at least 4 major developments over the past 100 years but the Cardiff Rugby Club ground was built into the same structure as the old Arms Park which somehow was incorporated into the Millennium Stadium. In its somewhat bewildering history it’s hosted Rugby Union, club and International, County Cricket, Baseball, Athletics, (Commonwealth Games) Bowls, Boxing, Greyhound Racing Tennis and Rugby League to say nothing of 100’s of large concerts.
