As pointed out by Keith Edwards, all four are nervous ninnies. Collectively they're a shambles.
 
Adkins is either going to have to stick with Jay McEveley and risk promotion or man up and admit he made a mistake making him captain without signing anyone new to possibly fill the role.

Adkins seems a top bloke, but he dropped a bollock there.
 
What makes matters worse is there is no character in the squad to drive these types of players on. Everyone has these types of players, but they have leaders and warriors to look up to.

Got to agree with this, especially in a four man midfield it is the equivalent of starting with ten men.
 
Did Baxter even touch the ball today was he even on the field ? I hardly heard his name on the RS commentary.

You have to surmise that Adkins thinks the extra responsibility will improve McEverley's game. Personally I don't see how. Judging from last season he's too much of an error prone plodder that's always going to be apologizing. Captaincy has to go to Basham or Wallace whenever he's fit to play.
 
I'm not gettin carried away and writing the season off but I agree with the OP. Reinstate Howard as no.1 and replace those three defenders. We can't afford to carry rubbish anymore. Not good enough simple as. The problem stemmed from the defence.

I think he can pick a pass like nobody else in our team can. But any midfield 4 containing him will get overrun. See today.

I think I heard Sharp mentioned once and Adams once when he was subbed off. Maybe one of the worst ever Blades performances. Am totally shocked how a mid-table Gillingham team can be so superior on the day.

It's not a surprise that he looked good in pre season. Lower intensity, more time on the ball, less physical... He'd look a tremendous footballer in that context.

The Radio Sheffield pundits were applauding the decision to play him in a four "where he did so well at Oldham". I had my head in my hands.

That decision, plus the choice of defensive unit, are hopefully ones Adkins will not make again.
 
The players are spineless w@nkers and they are stealing a living. They haven't got a solitary ounce of pride in themselves. They're bullied every game, out thought every game and out worked every game.
Add to that a club/manager/scouting system that will not sign a player unless it brings out a collective groan from almost everybody and the disaster that the recipe has prepared for the last 8 years is just about complete.

This is what happens when club retard abandons it's boring hoofball and attempts to do what every other club tries to do naturally and play football.
It's just not possible for Sheffield United and its fans to have a decent team playing decent football in an interesting and exciting way.....................Even winning has to be sh@t and unenjoyable for the poor souls that decided to support this tw@tting club
 
A thread about the defends turns into a slag off of Baxter. How predictable.

He isn't a combat midfielder - that's not his game. He needs to get on the ball and have runners to pick out. Others have to do the battling role - that's the case in most clubs who have a ball playing midfielder.

What's Basham's role? To win tackles. Maybe the finger needs pointing at him?

Yes let's have a player who doesn't need to run,tackle,compete and only pass to runners. That's the way to get out of the 3rd division . Show ponies can fuck off for me especially poor ones who make about 3 passes a season .

Baxter is never a CM and I guess the blame there should probably be placed with the manager and coaching staff. He could probably pull the role off if he was partnered by a really top class tigerish partner in there. I think Basham gets a lot of passes in terms of criticism, but it sounded like he did nothing either in the centre. I'm personally not convinced he's the answer in there but he's the best we have.

Baxter just seems to not fit into any formation at this level really.
 
I would move Basham to CH as a short term solution until I signed 1,if not 2,centre halves and play Howard until I could sign another decent keeper

Baxter was possibly our best player in the first half.
I hope this gives you a clue as to how bad we were today.
