Firstly, I was pleased with Uniteds dealings yesterday, the Harper signing is superb. But, with actual details of the deal yet to be announced by either club Im concearned that if its a loan, like some articles suggest we are getting close to maximum number of loan players in our squad.

My understanding is that United can name 5 loan players in their match day squad, but only 4 can be on the pitch at any one time. (Think Wednesday had an issue with this a while back).

So should Bunn, Walker, Treacy continue to play (which on current form is very likely) we are already at 3. Now IF Harper is a loan deal, if he's in the team we are upto 4.

It seems Blackwell is hoping to strengthen CB and ST, but should say Morgan get a ban (always a possibility) or Henderson (definately possibly) any new loan signings could require a drastic reshuffle to fit them in.

Hopefully United or Reading will ease my concearns and confirm that its a permanent deal, but he's only on a short term contract. In which case everything tickety boo and Blackwell can go out and get a couple of loans in.

yeah, I just checked that out. I think theres some confusion over it all, Blackwell said that we had "taken Harpers contract on till the end of the season" so that suggests to me its permanent, but Reading obviously see it as a loan. I dont know. We'll soon find out.
It will be unsettling for the team though if some players cant play because we have too many loans. I'd suggest Treacy is the most vulnerable should we need to alter things because changing GKs is never a good idea and Walker as been very impressive and we dont have cover at RB. Treacy as been quite impressive in spells too, but we have Reid who can play there so he might miss out.

We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

Very interesting points Greg.

My understanding is that he is a free agent at the end of the season and will be entitled to sign for who he likes. I am certain Reading will have no recall so I don't think it matters if it is a loan or permanent. I suppose if it is permanent and McCabe panics again he could sell him in January!

In terms of the number of loan players I think what we are seeing is a determination from the club to maintain as strong a possible first 11 whilst also dealing with the 're-profiling'.

Moving slightly off the subject I really cannot stand the McCabe interviews when he is economical with the truth or whatever we want to call it, but in fairness I struggle to recall any CCC club moving away from parachute payments being able to field such a strong first 11 and that is to McCabe's credit.

OK we are going to need major luck with injuries (for example if Morgan is out for say 3 months I think we wil really struggle) but all things considered I think we have to unfortunately accept that loan players, in addition to a core of contracted regulars, is the only way we can compete this season. It's much the same as any CCC club but our core (and I don't midfield!) is much stronger and I'm hoping Blackwell will thrive in these circumstances - although Stokes and Dyer would suggest not.

The point I'm trying to make is we are going to have to get used to a huge gulf between the quality of Morgan for example and a likely back-up should he get injured. That is why we need luck - not ideal by any stretch but worth a gamble given the understandable desire from McCabe to match income with expenditure. West Brom have Barnett and I think another decent back-up (name escapes me) to Martis and Ollsen at the back and that is the difference between us and them in my opinion

I said above that it doesn't matter if Harper is a loan or not - apologies - it clearly does as Gregblade said in terms of numbers of loan players in total but hopefully not in terms of recalls and options held by Reading etc

back up at the back is definitely a problem which i picked up on even before bromby left surely KB can't think we won't get injuries or in morgans sake suspensions the only thing i can think of is Naysmith is getting close to fitness we are only aloud 1 more loanee on the pitch 2 more in the squad. By the sounds of the blackwell interview he was close on a striker so he might loan him.

Izzy Iriekpen is another free agent, having left Hamilton Academical for family reasons the other day. Not seen much of him, but he's 6'2, pretty quick and has some experience at our level. Not sure we are in a position to attract much better at the moment.

Are there more centre half free agents around?

As we saw yesterday, if it suits, clubs / players can cancel their contracts thus making them free agents.

I'm also pretty sure that loans from outside England are not treated the same way. Blackpool for example had 6 loanees in their 1st team squad at times last season but included Charlie Adam who didn't affect their 'total loans permissable' as he was from Scotland who have a different FA.

I've just mentioned in another thread my dislike for loan signings.

I don't mind having one or two, but by the time you're getting 5 players on loan you'll end up back at square one soon enough. You can sign a couple of them permanently after some good loan performances, but too many times you see players do really well on loan, then go downhill after they earn themselves a transfer.

That's my biggest concern about our squad. I don't mind too much being short on players, as long as they're all our players. Obviously though, the size of the squad is quite a big worry for me aswell. Especially with the likes of Morgan, Quinn and Henderson who are likely to pick up suspensions.

Letting myself get wildly optimistic for a second..... the loan signings might be a way to get good Championship quality players for a year to get us out of the league without then having to go in to the first year in the Prem with them, letting us spend all our resources on better players when we get there.

Iriekpen was only any good on Championship Manager 03 Since then and in REAL LIFE he's rubbish

we are only aloud 1 more loanee on the pitch 2 more in the squad. By the sounds of the blackwell interview he was close on a striker so he might loan him.

Bunn, Walker, Treacy, Harper = the 4 player limit, so we can't have anymore loanee's on the pitch.

Which means who ever we get in on loan will be back up, and should they be required to play one of the above 4 will have to be dropped......

Too may loans means that even if the squad does gel you'll get what happened after last season to our outstanding loan player, namely Greg Halford.

The parent club loans them out for the season hoping for one of several options. The player gets found out that he can't play at this level, in which case he goes back at the end of the season.
Or maybe he does well, not well enough for his parent club to want to keep him, but well enough for another side to come in with either a better loan deal for the following season or a full transfer, often a newly promoted club, like Wolves did, or a club newly relegated to the division the loanee has been playing in.
The last option is he does really well and his parent club want him back and playing for them. Whichever way you look at it, it doesn't do a great deal for any consistency for the club that has him for one season. If he's good, he'll be gone. It's not very often the player gets signed by the club.
Players seem more likely to sign for the club they were on loan at when they've been there for half a season, like Cotterill.
