After listening to the Trevor Birch interview on RS it really hit home just what a tight financial situation we are in. Regardless of what I think about it, or how poorly I think it has been managed it puts some perspective on the team’s current situation. I know my moods change like the four seasons on a daily cycle but I woke up this morning actually looking forward to the game tomorrow and feeling a little more optimistic. That optimism has taken a hit after listening to the interview from last night I hasten to add. I don’t subscribe to the view that this supposed £46M debt doesn’t impact on the assets of the football club, as TB described, but rather on the property investment side of things. Of course it impacts on the assets of the football side! We are having to sell players and cut the wage bill to service the debt! It’s having a direct effect on the football club, so while I accept the current situation we are in, I don’t accept the quite obvious spin being used. I was born on a Monday, not last Monday! The one and only reason that our debt isn’t as bad as other clubs is because we have a chairman that isn’t pressing for his money back. We are fortunate in that sense because the way I read into it is that the majority of the debt is owed back to Mr McCabe.

We are told belts must be tightened in the summer as well. TB didn’t specifically say whether this would depend on promotion or relegation but the tone of his voice and the way it was put across almost suggested the forecasted budget would be geared towards the Championship. I have no problem with that because we can’t assume promotion at any time. We can assume our status in the Championship, pretty much. The clear message that I got from it was that its tough times ahead. That’s fine, if it has to be it has to be but I want to see us doing things the right way within that remit. For example, instead of spending money on wages and fees for loan players, let’s wipe the slate clean in the summer and build a squad of our own players. It can be done on a modest budget and other clubs are doing it. Get rid of whatever is left of the big earners from the last two seasons and keep a core of KB’s team together (say 15 players). I’m sure we can find some good free transfers with the way the football economy is and let’s give some young lads a chance. There must surely be some talent in our academy that would benefit from being on the fringes of the first team?! I would just like to see maybe a 24 strong squad of our own players. If you’re going to pay 5 loanees their normal PL wages we might as well pay and keep our own players. During tough times we need to stick together and fight by having our own men who are here for the long haul. Not some Jonny Foreigner who is going back to Fulham in 3 months!

One mention I will give is for Kevin Blackwell. I have been less than enamoured with our style of play this season and I find his tactics in some games baffling to say the least. Despite that, I have to admit under the financial restraints I now know of, 6th position in the Championship suggests he is doing remarkably well, regardless of how he is going about it. For those who are about to reply with the suggestion that he has had loads of money to spend on Darius Henderson, David Cotterill etc. etc. yes he did have a decent budget last year. But we were using the parachute payments and we happened to do very well. We finished 3rd last season and were very unlucky not to go up automatically so you can’t really argue with that. I’m not his biggest fan at the moment but I have to take my hat off to the guy, I hadn’t realised just how tight the budget was getting. He has lost a lot of personnel and hasn’t had the salary budget to attract equivalent replacements. Yes we could play much better football and for me, he needs to try. But the directors also need to find some way of helping him find a settled squad of players. The staff turnover has been ridiculous!

Referring back to Saturday’s game, I am looking forward to it with the slightest bit of hesitation. On paper and based on league position we should destroy Derby. That may be harder than anticipated after their uplifting win against Forest. I would air on the side of caution in this one and have a bad feeling in my gut bearing in mind what Watford did to us the other night. Hopefully my gut feeling is mis-informed and the Blades smash them! You can never rule anything out with United. We should be able to put enough out to beat them but this is a MUST WIN game to keep our season on track. I won’t make a prediction on this occasion. I will just keep my fingers crossed, got to the game and get behind the lads. Can I please urge that under the current circumstances we face and the disappointment of the other night, KB and the players need our full backing on Saturday? It’s our job to give them a lift so they can give us one!

I agree the team needs all the support it can get but to my mind the atmosphere at the Lane is worse than it was under Robson. Its impossible to get excited anymore. I genuinely sit there bored and wondering why the hell I'm freezing my nuts off to watch the standard of play in front of me. I spent £600+ on Sts for my family in the close season, I genuinely cannot justify spending that or similar when the begging bowl comes around again dangling the carrot of early-renewal prices.
On Saturday I will watch a much better game of football Derbyshire FA Cup semi final, I'll kick every ball, be screaming from the touchline and care about the result. More than I could say for if I went down on Saturday. Thats how low we've sunk emotionally, for me and I'm sure I'm far from alone.

So basically only those with anything positive to say are posting on this thread then? I dont understand why the majority go on a fans forum, just to complain 100% of the time.

Yes, a forum is there for debate and for opinions to be shot at or feelings to be made clear but when I said FANS FORUM........

The operative word is FANS so at least try and pretend some of you are and stop bleeting constantly.

Matt and Puppet had something constructive and positive to say so whats wrong with everyone else? It would be nice to hear positive encouragement to get everyone feeling a little more upbeat.

For me the scariest thing isnt the cost cutting etc that we are going to have to do in the future, its how pleased TB was with Blackwells handling of the cost cutting excersise so far.

I just fear KB will be here for quite a while yet :cry2:

Lou....What positives did Pupp mention? Only a spinmeister extraodonaire could find anything postive in his post

I still can't think of anywhere I'd rather be on a Saturday afternoon. Songs still give me shivers, beer with my Pop still tastes as good. I still sing (quietly, I am on JS) and I'll still cheers goals. I'll still probably come away deflated but hey ho. I'll do it again.

Agreed Lou, spot on son. Now is the time to close shop, put our grievances aside and support the team, the manager and the club. No matter how much you argue with your missus or your brothers and sisters, they are still your family and you would defend them to the hilt if outsiders came gunning for them. The Blades are our family and the pigs are having a field day at the moment, saying we are on the brink of admin and that fans will be like rats jumping from a sinking ship. Brothers and sisters, now is the time to show a united front (pun intended).

I’m no clapper, I’m a Blackwell knocker. I don’t like his tactics, style of play, some of his team selections etc, but I find myself slowly accepting that this could be as good as it gets for a good few seasons and you know what? It feels ever so slightly liberating but there again, I always have been a bit of an oddball.

Up the Blades – F*ck the pigs!

He started with one;

"I agree the team needs all the support it can get"

and ended with one;

"UTB"

Criticism and dissatisfied opinion is fine as long as it is put across in the right manner, which it was.

UTB

This is what worries me. The only players I can think of in our squad that are likely to be on substantially higher wages than the majority of other Championship players are Naysmith (Robbo signing), Evans (Blackwell signing) and Camara (Blackwell signing).

You look at our squad and it is full of average Championship players. This, twinned with the fact that we have such a small squad makes it difficult to believe that we do have one of the highest wage bills.

On another note, hopefully the atmosphere might be a bit better because Derby should bring a few. A full away end sometimes helps to gee up the home fans. Anyone know how many tickets they've sold?

We are crap, the atmsophere's poxy, the syle of play is shit, we're millions in debt etc etc is a positive if you sign off with UTB? Bit like saying every German who said Heil Hitler was being positive about the Fuehrer.

Jon Bon, you seem to have a very similar view to myself. The one positive im taking from it all is that its going to be just like the old days again.......when we had no money and did everything on the cheap! We have always been this way so whats new?! Its typical United and we love them regardless.

Why the pigs would be having a field day is beyond me though. Their debt is a far worse one than ours. Theirs is to banks and to investors no longer at the football club. Even with our debt we were able to propose the funding of our own stadium renovations for Bramall Lane before the WC but poor little Wednesday had to ask for a council hand out. Its pathetic to think theyre looking to pick fault with us when their poor excuse for a shit hole has been mis-managed for years.

They can call us all they want but it wont get them any closer to being us. Its as if they want this merger. They love us really :D

Ghandi take it up with Puppet if it bothers you. I take your point but I didnt post it.

Would indeed be good if the away end is full and noisy.

Would help if we came out and took it to them and so our end would be noisy.

An outrageous refereeing decision, a bit of a "bench brawl" etc. would really get everywhere noisy.

Blackie. Pick the right team, have a bloody go and let the fans have something to get noisy about.

Just checked their website. They sold the initial allocation we gave them of 1,500. We have given them a further 800 which is on general sale so they will probably sell most of that I would think.

Hope that helps :D

Well said Lou. I've watched United for 45 years - don't regret a minute of it and I'm looking forward to the challenges ahead. It is perfectly understandable given the mistakes made, shocking luck and raised expectations that people are disappointed But the disappointment people are feeling today needs to be put into context, would you rather have Brealey, Woolhouse Macdonald, Strapon or any of the crooks that run other clubs plus Martin Peters, Harry Haslam etc ?

I feel no ill feeling towards any supporter who jumps ship. Many will be those who were only happy to support a winning team and we'll welcome them back when times change. The best is yet to come.

We might be "remarkably" 6th but owing to the nature of the CCC we are only 10 points up on being 5th from bottom...........................

So just how many times do the fans have to be urged to "forget the past" (play off finals), "get behind the lads", even though the lads do fuck all most games bar stroll around like a bunch of schoolkids, "support the manager" who's not a Blade, he's a bloke earning a fortune and he's not performing, "sing your heart out" for what? I think over the years the Lane's been a very vociferous place but IMO it's made little difference to the little darlings who play when they see fit and sulk when they feel like it.

I get a bit pissed off with all these rallying cries, we're talking about highly paid and highly motivated sportsmen here so tell you what, write to the club, ask the players to roll their sleeves up and go for it from the off on Saturday, and then see how the crowd react instead of it always having to be the supporters responsibility to get the team going.

:gallop:

Oh and Eskimo, I'm also a Blade who's been attending for 45 years but have drawn the line this season as it certainly isn't the SUFC that I remember anymore.

I hear you and I get as frustrated. Their are bits of your post I agree with to some extent (footballers do sulk, the players and manager do need to strive to do better)......but if you dont like it, dont go. I have questioned my investment in a season ticket and still am but now ive paid my money and my seat is there im going to get behind them. Im not going to sit there and moan because my money doesnt fit in my wallet and my diamond shoes are too tight (excuse the FRIENDS reference).

Why do you go just to complain, youre just tormenting yourself. There is nothing wrong with venting frustration and dissaproval on here. I encourage differing opinions, but when someone comes up with some positives - why knock them down?! If as you say, the players and manager arent doing their jobs correctly - then why cant we be the light at the end of the tunnel?

just a word about the atmosphere.. it is so dire because we don't hold onto the ball long enough for the fans to get into the action.

Like I said mate, I packed in going after the draw with Ipswich earlier in the season so I actually did make a statement and stuck by it.

Good post but one thing to say Jon Bon, I think now is the time to ditch the Clappers and Knockers titles and try and back the Blades as best we can.

We're not Clappers....
We're not Knockers....
WE ARE BLADES, WE ARE BLADES, OH WE ARE WE ARE BLADES!!!!!!

You make a very valid point. However what gets me, a 45 year old exiled fan, is Utd are so so predictable.

In the days of the late great John Harris we played fantastic football but were prone to be a bit weak defensively. If we had any good players Hassell and his predecessor would have them sold, usually to Leeds. The only chairman who to my mind actually invested in the team to take us forward for the division we were in was Brierley, however this might have been at the expense of Indian Jute workers !

So where is this going. Well my solution is simple and for a while I thought the club had actually cottoned on to it. We need a pool of young players who get used to playing with each other supplemented by say 3/4 experienced pros. In the past pros like McGrath, Spackman, Saunders. You then need the conductor a manager who get them to play. Perhaps someone with a combination of the elements of Warnock (passion), Harris (style) and Blackwell (win record).

The only guy around who I think could do this is Coppell but I doubt if he would move north and he hardly comes across as passionate, furthermore McCabe/Birch won't ditch Blackie because he is cheap as chips. Maybe Mark Hughes but I suspect Bramall Lane is too far down for him.

Frankly that's it. We will never have the money to take us forward with this constant half baked approach and I blame McCabe utterly for the sales of Beattie, Naughton and Walker. The former should have been kept until the summer then sold and the latter two another season at least. These sales cost as promotion last season and will ensure a mid table finish this. Next year expect a bottom half struggle.

Having home grown youngsters and hanging on to them seems beyond the mentality of successive Sheffield United chairman when the stated aim is promotion and puts us about the level of Preston or Blackpool, illustrious history but mediocre clubs now. At least Wednesday have bought in a good manager (thought they would go for Megson with Hughes going to Bolton) and I wouldn't be surprised if they finished above us.

I have always loved the Blades with a fierce passion but it sure sends me ape when decade after decade we have chairman who frankly find it difficult to take the football side of the club forward.

Reading between the lines on the interview I believe mcCabe wants out because he was banking on the world cup money to fund his plans to build a super stadium. I hope TB finds us an investor. If anyone can do it he can. Like many others I struggle to see why our wage bill is so high but I expect we are still paying shed loads to Naysmith and Paddy. I agree with keeping our club as financially stable as we can and KM has done that apparently tho I cant understand why there is never any mention of the Tevez money or the extra we were supposed to get from Stoke when they stayed up post Beattie.

The next 2 or 3 weeks will be crucial we can battle on and keep there or thereabouts but if we hit another bad run we are sunk; without Chrissy Morgan to motivate the teams the fans have to do it so sing loud on Sat

I think our club officials are probably concerned that we wont see a penny of the what is owed from the Tevez money because of West Ham's desperate financial situation. Just because Sullivan and Gold have come in and bought it doesnt mean theyre flush again. Theyve just inherited the same problems and are bank rolling desperate spending on players. Why not, instead of letting them spend millions on new players, dont the football authorities deduct their revenue to pay the debt owed to the Blades? Theyre doing this to Portsmouth so why arent West Ham any different?!

The money West Ham owe is is a football debt. If they don't pay we sue and get a court judgment against them. If they still don't pay we send them into adminsitration, If that happened, WHU would not be allowed to compete in any sort of league governed by the FA unless they paid us in full.

In other words, the only way WHU can avoid paying is if the club disappears completely.
