No not the usual McCabe bashing from me (or perhaps by the time I have finished venting it will be). Most know what I think of the man but this is where we are and what we are stuck with.
I see a thread elsewhere talking about quick decisions. I almost agree because when we have thought about appointments we have generally fucked it up (although I don't think Wilson was a bad appointment).
1) McCabe, he isn't going so thats where we are. I loathe the man for many reasons well documented but he is the man at the top and he isn't going to chuck money in. For this reason...
2) Get rid of almost everyone off the squad list. Keep the kids (if deemed good enough) and keep Long, McGuire, McDonald (possibly). We know we are going to be left with players like Murphy but FFS lets rid ourselves of the dads army of don't give a fucks like Kitson.
3) Put a budget in place and tell the fans where we are. If we are investing in youth and playing kids then lets see it. Don't piss up my leg and tell me its raining, just give me the facts. I know we are shit so lets get on with being shit.
4) Think long and hard about the next manager. If only to get every possibility out of the woodwork. That may mean writing off next season by the way. I know McCabe won't get someone in to make the decision but lets at least give the right man the chance to make himself seen. If you think its Morgan then do it now.
5) Don't blow smoke up everyones arse. While you can be critical about football fans the one thing we all respond well to is honesty. If McCabe came out and said we are up shit creek, don't have 2 beans to rub together and we are going to have to go with youth, I think the fans would applaud him for it but........
6) If we are going with kids, give them the season. Whoever is manager needs to know that a £5m bid from whoever isn't going to put the skids under the first team. This killed last season, let us never make this mistake again.
7) Give all renewing season ticket holders incentives. Bring people back to the lane because if we don't then League 2 awaits before the Championship. If its a 10% reduction on last season do it. If they recommend a friend, give them £50. Things like this make a difference to people. Those who have already renewed give them money back.
My feeling is McCabe is thrashing about wondering how he can win the fans back. Its so simple. Reward the poor bastards who have suffered and kept with the club and give some honesty back to the fans.
Last of all, continuity. When Warnock got it wrong in 04-05 McCabe kept faith. That as much as anything helped us put the 06 team together for promotion. Lack of continuity has been the cancer that has us where we are. Think about your next appointment McCabe and give him a chance. Tell him while you want results, he won't have to bring back Michael Brown and Danny Webber on loan, in fact he will be sacked if he does.
I don't care how shit we are, I just want some honesty and a vision to show where we are trying to go backed up by action. That bit should be given as a matter of course and McCabe used to be so good at it.
