Just look at the last two.seasons
The triple assault season under warnock

Me i'd forfeit every cup game to have a chance of getting out of this anus of a division

That argument is fine if you look at every other season where we've gone out of the cups at the earliest point and then stormed the league...

There is a fantastic argument that fans love the cup success. Some will even be daft enough to pay nearly GBP 60 for a 3rd round cup game against Man U.

The only cup i want us out of is the JPT because its a pain in the arse and you can't play a team of kids/ reserves in it

at the risk of sounding like blade too long
Look at leicester today
Do you think if they finish fourth and in the champions league theure fans will be complaining they didnt go for it in the fa cup ?

On the other hand if he picks a full strength team and vardy limps off thats 4th place gone

Ah the memories of the prem.
Jags and CKR goals even Gillespies
Wigan game and all the fortunate incidents that wet spam had.
Now beatingVilla and Charlton as well as the others in that cup run was great.
Also, the Spurs cup run.
To those that say they don't want the prem. Competative in the championship what the fuck does that mean? Finishing just outside the play offs or losing in them so we don't go up?
Sorry, I'm with sitwell on this. Try to win every game realism does not come in to it till after you have lost.
When we where in the Premiership I did not get to any away game, it was impossible to get any tickets - so when Warnock was saying it was great to visit all these great stadiums he was speaking for himself! True getting to the Premier League is the only way that United could win the Cup, but sadly even then the board would not spend much of the £80 million on top players.

Daft argument, they could rest him this weekend and he limps off next prem game.

As for going for it on all fronts, they probably have a better chance in the cup than they have of finishing 4th. But if they have the squad size, why not give both a go?

But they wont win the Champions league ,so will they drop players in that ?
And I would rather have won yesterday but it doesn't have to be one Or the other.

so basically staying in league one and having a big day out in the cup every year is the pinnacle of little old sheffield uniteds ambitions then

Whilst I like enthusiasm and positivity, I felt Warnock had the wrong attitude when we were in the Premiership. Too much "it's great to be here and what an honour it is", and not enough self respect for himself and (more importantly) for the club and the team.
I say this regardless of how much backing he felt he had from the Board. Not enough fight.

Where has anyone come anywhere near saying that ? It like me saying beating Wigan is the pinnacle of our ambitions. Do you think dropping Long ,Sharp ,Coutts ,Brayford and Edgar would have made them think ' good choice gaffer ,Im fit as owt now, glad I missed out on Old Trafford ,lets fuck these rugby league wankers over ' ?

We had McEveley and Sammon limp off yesterday. As luck would have it they are players not many on here will worry about but it could have been Brayford and Sharp.
As it is our first team yesterday will be knackered on Tuesday night against a fresh Wigan side who came back to win from 2-0 down last Thursday night.

It's all about priorities and risk. The draw at Old Trafford was awkward in the professional sense.

You know full well he has not said that.neither is anyone else.
5 seasons in this league and only one was enjoyable from a league point until someone got banged up. the last two have at least given us something to cheer when the league form is crap.
This is not a question of Bladey Bladeness but do you go to any cup games?

Whilst I don't much worry about Sammon, Collins is knackered without JMc to back him up. but that is our limitation at the moment.

No dont get to many league games either though

Nobody wants a League 1 side to win one of the two big cups apart from the club's own supporters.

The TV company would be distraught if a L1 side reduced the appeal of the semi-finals and the Final. Supporters worldwide would resent missing two big clubs fight it out; having to watch us would reduce the appeal of going to the pub to watch it, so the pub trade would be upset, so would the bookmaking industry, so would the newspaper industry - less of a pre-Final build-up, match day preview, reports etc, sales well down when L1 team gets beat 5-0 at Wembley.

Referees like glamour too and it's one of their big days to referee a Cup Final - how much disappointment if it turned out to be SUFC v Watford or somebody. Not saying they would conspire against us, nothing like that, of course not, no pressure from all the above stakeholders, none whatsoever!!!

you started it
Lol! The point being that if you use the argument that he could get injured in the cup, the same applies in the league, training, walking to the shops, on a night out in Rhyl, Dublin, Glasgow and eating lollipops in the VIP.... It could happen anytime, its not a reason to not play in the cup

We have had some good cup runs and still got promoted so I don't think it has much of a detrimental effect.

Last 5 Promotion Seasons vs cup

2005/06 Rd3 Colchester
1989/90 Rd6 Man U
1988/89 Rd5 Norwich
1983/84 Rd3 Birmingham
1981/82 Rd1 Altrincham

I wanted to win, because I want us to win every game.

Plus a Cup run would have been nice given that promotion is not going to happen this season.

For me I'd forfeit promotion to win the cup. It would be the greatest cup win in the history of the competition and it would shut up those big gob pigs and dirty weeds up for the next ten years.
I'm sure that particular thought crossed N.Clough's mind last season.

Thats a point...when was the last great Cup win by anybody? (I know you'll all say nineteen twenty bloody five lol!)

For me, although they say its a distraction from the league a good Cup run breeds confidence in the ranks, pulls the fans in and means you get games in hand on your rivals perhaps which i personally like having as a kind of cushion/insuance policy.

I'm sorry Swiss, I'm not having that! There is simply no way a professional footballer would walk to the shops!!!

Exactly, why walk. Who do you think disabled parking spaces are for?

the declining standard cant continue in this division surely ?

I think it’s a fallacy to be honest. Teams at this level are better drilled, more organised, fitter etc. than they were a few years ago. I really don’t think the standard is declining at all. Our first year down here was an odd one in that us, pigs, udders, Charlton, MK, Preston etc. were all down resulting in more decent sized clubs than usual. I think the weakest this league has been since we were down here is the 2nd season when Donny, Bournemouth and Yeovil went up.

Personally, I have never wanted us to lose a game or go out of any competition. However, if you offered me a win on Saturday and a defeat on Tuesday or vice versa, I would take beating Wigan. I didn’t want to go out of the cup or lose Saturday, I just want league success more.

Easy to dismiss the cups when you're stuck in L1 but it's often the cups that drag the casual supporter back to the Lane where they get hooked again and gets the young fans exited. It's impossible to quantify but I wonder how much of our large attendances are due in some way to the cup runs we've had, how many part timers and young kids have been sucked in.
And it's fun, how often is supporting the Blades fun? (In terms of football). I was pissed off we conceded so late we didn't have the chance to get an equaliser and see what would happen when we took the game to them but I'm not really bothered, it's not like that relegation or losing in a POF feeling.

And let's face it, if we scraped up this season, after two seasons in the championship if we haven't reached the playoffs the same people moaning now will be moaning then about how we lack ambition, stuck in an agricultural league, the championship's never been poorer etc.

So time to put the funny hats away for another year and get set for four months of angst and hand wringing as each victory means we're bound for promotion and each defeat means we have lost all hope and we're doomed to stay in L1 for eternity.

And once in a while something will crop up to remind us that Shankly was wrong, football isn't more important than life and death, and that football isn't a religion, because religions offer redemption.
