With the state of the football we've had to endure over the past few seasons there has been precious little to sing about. However, it got me thinking about some of the great original chants form the past and who actually thinks of them and how do they start.
Quite often they seem to be based on current popular songs of the time e.g. Prince Charming by Adam and the Ants - 'don't you ever, don't you ever lower yourself to supporting Sheffield Wednesday' or cult/new/popular players e.g. I remember a bloke on the John Street terrace during a quiet period started up a song about Jostein Flo 'Jo Flo, Jo Flo twice as tall as me' can't remember much else and it didn't seem to catch on - probably because he and the football was crap.
A lot has been mentioned about all seating grounds and the lack of atmosphere. Which is probably true as most chants when I started going seemed to start at the back of the kop when it was standing and then spread which doesn't seem to happen now.
Anyway can anyone lay claim to creating a new chant which eventually caught on?
