I understand why some people get worked up about Wilder fielding a reserve team on Sunday although that opinion surely hinged on the precise science of hindsight? Had we won the game which, despite Wilder's condemnation, we could easily have done had good chances been taken I doubt there'd have been much fuss.

For me Wilder's approach made sense and I went to the game looking forward to seeing Dowell and squad players take their chance (or not as ultimately proved the case).

For what it's worth, here's what I saw:

Players who did OK
There were no stellar performances but:

Coutts (comfortably MotM to my eyes) did enough to escape Wilder's vilification. Other than being caught in possession once he was efficient, if not spectacular, in his passing and put in a few good tackles.

Dowell looks to possess many of Duffy's traits - great touch, ability to beat a player, head up and capable of seeing a killer pass. He also put a real shift in and made a couple of decent tackles.

Stearman gave away the penalty but had made two crucial, (one probably goal saving), tackles beforehand. He wasn't great but certainly did enough to escape the worst of Wilder's wrath.

Players who blew it, big time

Marvin Johnson: has some ability and made a couple of decent runs but temperament seems questionable and was seemingly looking to get himself substituted towards the end of the game, without being obviously injured. On evidence to date Norrington-Davies (on loan at Barrow) could be a better cover option for Enda.

Freeman: Appalling first-half, seemed unwilling to put in a shift and was surely one of those fitting Wilder's "arrogant" label. Second half improvement with two or three great crosses giving evidence of just how much of a toss he didn't give before the interval. On borrowed time.

Washington: Offered just shy of nothing. Service was admittedly poor but on the few occasions he did touch the ball he showed poor choices and a worse touch. Does he offer more than a match fit Evans?

Clarke: Probably the worst I've seen him in a Blades shirt. Saw more of the ball than Washington but equally poor in possession. Snap header tipped onto the bar in the last few minutes was his only contribution of note. Made a strong case for M****e.

Just not good enough

Cranie: Did little wrong and, if he'd been a racehorse probably ran to form. Unfortunately, just not good enough for where we want to be and demonstrated just how effective Basham is in the same role. George Cantrill from the U-23s offers more scope from what I've seen to date.

Lundstram: Can't really fault his commitment but looks consistently as though he is playing a league above his capability. Had no significant impact on the game.

Is he a bird? Is he a plane?

Kean Bryan: played on the left of the back three and has the technical ability you'd expect of a Man City Academy product with a cupboard full of England youth caps. Didn't show a great deal to get excited about yesterday but demonstrated one major flaw in his heading inability. Clearly not writing him off after one game but not sure where he fits in to our current preferred system.

I've read and listened to arguments about not respecting the competition and giving supporters value for money but Wilder put out a team that should have been well capable of despatching a run of the mill, non-league outfit. The lessons learned could prove invaluable in the months ahead and the harsh truth is that, save for a few exceptions, existing cover players are just not good enough.

Lessons from Barnet are simple. Wilder can't trust any cunt who dosent start when it matters.
They were a disgrace and betrayed their managers trust and defrauded the few that turned up.

What not to do when playing a football match!

I was not impressed with Bryan and Dowell. Like it was said before I don’t want to judge to heavy on one performance though.

As I watched I was getting more and more annoyed at the current state of things in the way top clubs are holding on to players.

I understand Bryan is no longer with Man City but surly they knew a long time back he was not going to compete with Stones and Kompany and the like. Then there is Dowell. If he is a top end of the Prem player then we will be able to compete in that league no worries.

Big clubs farming out the same players year in year out. It has to be said Dowell played like he was doing us a favour and that can only be because he has grandeur’s above his station. They need to dig in work hard and if they have talent it will flourish when they work hard.

I'm sorry, but Washington is terrible. He's actually got all the right attributes as well, you can tell he's not a goalscorer though....the positions he takes when we're building up play down the flanks is awful, he should watch Billy in training.

A scared to score striker goes out wide which is exactly what Clarke and Washington did yesterday.

Thought Coutts looked tidy whenever he was involved but spent most of the game hiding away from the ball like he did under Clough and Adkins.

Wilder's teams always start the seaon terribly - they seem to need a few proper competitive matches to somehow find the magic that enables them to perform with vast superiority to the sum of its parts. (I think Wilder has 2 aspects to his success - one is (somehow) getting the players to perform far better than anyone else thought they were capable of, but it's also about the TEAM playing together - this is something fans of the clubs we beat often comment on. However this takes time to gel.)

With that in mind, given that yesterday's starting 11 had probably never played together and most of them had never played alongside most of the rest, I reckon we need to play that lot against another 2 or 3 non league sides before they start winning!

Crainie has been solid in his two league games and is adequate cover for Basham for the rest of the season IMVHO.

Purely basing this on the Forest game but Cranie looks solid in a position where we need more than that. One of my concerns is that if you take out either attacking CB, we're a lot easier to defend against.

Cranie has been perfectly fine so far.

Agree with “adequate” but Wilder wants real competition for places and can’t see Cranie challenging Bash.

Win and you could have had a winnable tie to reach the 5th round

Agreed with a number of your comments Bohemian, particularly that we put out a team of individuals good enough to win the match.

Dowell has clearly got some Premier League quality, but put a real shift in? He was far, far too lazy and passive - it was a massive difference when Duffy came on and there was finally someone running about and trying to make things happen. Dowell will need to significantly buck his ideas up if he wants to get a run in the team, and can learn a lot from Duffy's attitude.

Cranie: Did little wrong and, if he'd been a racehorse probably ran to form. Unfortunately, just not good enough for where we want to be and demonstrated just how effective Basham is in the same role. George Cantrill from the U-23s offers more scope from what I've seen to date.

I didn't go but by most accounts Cranie played very well against Wigan. Against Barnet it looked like he'd been told he had to get forward more often, which he did, but it's clearly not his strength and he was occasionally caught too far forward (exacerbated by the other defenders not sufficiently filling in to cover). He's clearly not as good as a marauding centre back as Basham, but don't think it's fair to write him off.

Your comment is spot on, the team on sunday had no relation in play, Duffy Sharp and Bash coming on made no difference either. None of the players who started sunday are young prospects except Bryan and Dowell. Ideally would've liked Tyler Smith and Slater starting.

The performances from Coutts, Johnson, Washington, Freeman (given recent form) and Lundstram were entirely predictable. Sort of the same for Clarke and Crainie (who was playing a position he's not used to). You didn't need to select any of the aforementioned to learn any lesson. That's how they've been playing.

Apart from the subs, the players that blew it big time we're all the starters.

I don't absolve Coutts of responsibility for just keeping hings ticking over. If he can't dictate play against a mid table conference team then he has no future with us.

It fucking worked well today. Never mind we have another cup game next week.
Ah, no we don't but it doesn't matter anyway because we lost to Barnet and according to loads that is going to win us promotion.
