I've conducted a study which shows that when Leo Sayer's song "Thunder in My Heart" achieves a chart placing in the UK, The Blades do worse.
Recorded in 1976, the initial release of "Thunder in my Heart" as a single and then album track heralded one of the most disastrous declines in Blades fortunes ever experienced - slowed only by Bucks Fizz's win in Eurovision 1981 with "making your mind up" - a message delivered to the club board in an unforgettable short skirted plea for more permanent signings, less use of the loan system and an end to midfield indecisiveness.
After a return to the top flight heralded by New Kids on the Block's magnum opus "Hanging Tough"in 89/90, the curse of Sayer again hit hard with the release and chart entry of "All the Best", a "best of" (sic) compilation again including the albatross "Thunder in my Heart". The perverse imp had spoken and the Blades went down that 93/94 season.
So to more recent times, and promotion having been heralded by WestLife's "You Raise me Up", the golden egg was rudely re-inserted into McCabe's goose by the release of "Thunder in My Heart (again)", a somewhat tarted up version of Sayer's invocation to his demon brothers which again had its desired effect in the 2006/07 season.
My conclusion - Sayer must be stopped, and we must pray for a significant boyband hit this season. The return of McFly may be our only hope. The correlation between people wasting money on Leo Sayer records rather than coming through the turnstiles at the lane or investing in the team is super clear to anyone. SAYER OUT.
