Leicester Fans Views On Hammond

Good mate of mine, a Foxes fan, occasionally joins me at the Lane. His view on Hammond.

"He's a very good player. Think you'll be impressed with him. As a premier league holding midfielder he was not out of his depth. He will do well, am sure of that."

Once you left the room I suspect your mate whipped a scooby doo style mask off to reveal Gary Megson laughing hysterically.

I take it that he's now sporting a set of false front teeth and needed rhinoplasty? ;)

My best mate is a foxes fan. He reckons Hammond was decent a few yrs ago but hasn't played much since start of last season. Still reckons he will be a cut above in league 1.
I think this here is a prime example of a modern fallacy. When Premier League players are over the hill, the last place they should look to extend their career is League One. I honestly think Wayne Rooney would simply continue his decline and bring nothing but suspensions.

One of my least favourite Blades. Not just a shit player, but a twatty human being as well.
To be fair you can't blame Dean Hammond for signing a lucrative contract, even if he was/is a piss-poor footballer. If United offered me a contract on £5K a week I'd sign, and I'm 48 and arthritic so I'd be no use to the eleventh team, never mind the first team. Blame the fuckwits who allowed the contract to be signed in the first place, 12 long months ago.

It wasn't that so much as his complete piss taking after he signed.

I still don't buy this view, SV. Despite plenty of contrary evidence, there is room in football for honesty and integrity, and we should take every opportunity available to shame the shameful.

I do fear reactions like this from some of our fans to a player like Hammond. He is unlikely to catch the eye and he is unlikely to make 50 yard driving runs like Yaya Toure. What he will do, when match sharp, is very subtly take control of a match, maybe not for 90 mins, but certainly at crucial times. Knowing when to sit, advance, keep possession, risk the long ball, are incredibly difficult skills to master, and he has them in spades. 450 matches and only 32 should tell you something. The best comparison I can think of is somebody like Simeone Perotta for Roma a few years back. Always overshadowed by the more dynamic Francesco Totti, but when he played for Roma v Man Utd they beat them 3-2. When he was injured for the 2nd leg (Totti played), they lost 7-1. I'm not comparing Hammond to Perotta by the way, merely pointing out the importance of a player who doesn't always catch the eye.

I do find it staggering when a non playing fan can say of a player with almost 500 1st team games under his belt and who has performed well in the Premier League as recently as last season, that he can't pass, can't tackle, can't shoot and has no stamina. This was his first competitive match for sometime, in a new environment and with new team mates.

I assume you are talking about Reed on our bench. I hope Adkins has told him to watch and learn everything Hammond does on and off the pitch in the next 3 months, and if he becomes anything like as good he will make a good living out of the game.

Tomorrow will mark 1 year exactly that I penned the above missive. I would like you to rest assured that I will be spending half the day in silent penance, and the other half flagellating myself with a length of barbed wire and rubbing vinegar into the wounds. Sometimes 'sorry' isn't enough.

Worth 10 likes that BFS!

As fans we will always see things differently but I think many forget that to some players it is just a job.

If someone was to offer you a lucrative contract at their place of work tomorrow on wages you knew didnt reflect your abilities would you honestly turn it down? Especially if you have a young family to think about? You're a better man than me if you can honestly say no.

As others have said, the blame for how much Hammond was getting paid lies solely with those who gave him the contract.

(It's also worth noting that Coutts was just as poor as Hammond last season, not that I'm suggesting Hammond would be any better under Wilder)

It's a million miles from a fair comparison, though. Particularly regarding the "pay reflecting ability" point. His position was untenable. The amount of money is almost irrelevant.

It's more akin to a recording artist sitting out his contract, taking his retainer but not making music. I'd have some pride, turn down the cheques and try to make honest money where I was appreciated. Genuinely.

A foxes mate of mine said "He's steady, he'll give you 7 every game." At the time I assumed he meant 7/10, but now it's obvious he meant seven minutes.

Six oil tanker turns.
Five misplaced passes.
Four late tackles.
Three gentle jogs.
Two left feet.
And a contract exte-eh-ension.

Some months into his time with us, some lads near me said of Hammond "He keeps the kettle boiling". I think that suitably vague metaphor will stay with me for a long time.

Did he take that job over from this man?
