Surely the major decision was McCabe's legendary parsimony in the amount NW was allowed to spend. In just 4 years the financial rewards for being in the PL - or the doubling of parachute payments - make this a foolish decision. We never 'went for it'.

It's all conjecture and opinions. For me, NW deserves 'legend' status.

Do we know how much Mccabe limited NW's spending. Presumably he was happy with the squad he had or he would not have wasted the best part of £3m on " players for the future ". Or perhaps he could have spent it on a player for the now maybe Beattie even.

Blades legends don't spend their time on Simon Jordans boat in Puerto Banus considering options while still managing the club of which they are supposed to be a huge fan and are trying to guide to promotion.

United's single biggest screw up in the last 10 year was appointing Robson. Not renewing the contract of the manager whose tactics and signings were at least partially responsible for relegation, and who had taken 7 years to get us up the first time round, was a defensible decision.

He became manager of an almost bankrupt club half way through the 1999-2000 season when we were stuck deep in relegation trouble. He worked off a shoestring budget for the next 5 years or so, and yet still got us to two cup semi finals and a play off final, as well as being in contention for the play off places in three other seasons (2000-1, 2003-4 and 2004-5). When finally given money of any significant amount he got us promoted immediately.

The same has happened at QPR. When given any significant amount of money to spend he got them promoted.

If Warnock had had the support that Robson got, we would not have been sliding match by match towards the relegation places. We will never know (because he wasn't given the chance), but I believe we would have gone straight back up in an automatic spot.

I think that holding the view that Warnock was one of our better managers and that it just might have been a mistake to get rid of him is not incompatible with believing that Bassett was also a good manager. Liking one doesn't exclude you from liking the other!

A bit harsh I think. He did a pretty good job without any money. Took us from a team in the shite and made us into a strong Championship, often promotion contending team. To take over after the mess Heath (and others before had left) and get us to finish 3rd in the league, play off final and two semi finals was no mean feat. When it was stagnating and his contract was almost up he went to McCabe and said 'give me some money and I will get us promoted'. McCabe gave him some cash et voila. He was by no means perfect (he is a self righteous pillock who always deflects the balme) and in the Prem he blew it (negative tactics away from home) but I feel your post above is not very objectve Rev.

Warnock is a (Sheffield United) legend - in my book.

As a sligh aside, I actually think that he has become a very respected manager. People always regarding him as a wind up merchant, get the best out of people but bit of a tactical dinosaur and massive moaner. Since his high profile late days with us, doing a decent job at Palace and then proving the doubters at QPR I think many respect him. I quite enjoy his show on Talk Sport and from his guests you can hear he carries some weight in the game. Last Christmas he had Harry Redknapp and Mick McArthy on his show and you could hear from the way they spoke to him that there was mutual respect.

Olly, in case you didn't know, Dinosaur Dave took us up from the third division to the top flight in successive seasons, on limited resources, and then on the same shoestring budget brought 4 seasons of top flight football to the Lane on absolute peanuts, whilst dealing with things like transfer embargo's being placed upon him, having Iraqi businessman Sam Hashimi trying to buy the club when he didn't have any money, having a chairman who bought the club and then did a disappearing act with the gate money, having fraudster Stephen Hinchcliffe on the board.

It's all well and good calling him Dinosaur Dave, but he had his methods, and his methods worked, and i can't think of any other manager who would have achieved anything like what he did at the time given the circumstances.

Anyway, what on earth so it matter what i'm drinking in relation to what i post. Despite all the self-indulgent nonsense you post about your opinion being right because you like Real Ale and like Proper Football, what a persons chosen drink is, has no bearing on any other what they post, or the validity of their opinion.

tbf ollie is a bit young to remember, so he is probably unaware that at the time hoofball was a viable option for success whereas nowadays it isn't . so you should let him off i reckon

For what it's worth imo Warnock took over the club at a time when things weren't good but change was coming in terms of money available etc. Given a decent budget I think he built a strong squad over the first few years and this obviously paid off with promotion. Yes he made some awful signings but he also made some great signings too. To be fair he was out of his depth in the premiership but like everything else in life it's all a learning experience and unfortunately he had to do that whilst with us.

This legend/bell end argument seems to have morphed in to a Warnock v Bassett and to me there is no argument, Bassett wins every time and I have a suspicion that even NW might agree there too. Credit to Warnock I like him for being largely responsible for a few exciting years at the club, something we won't see for a while now.

Definitely not a bell end. Legend though? I can't put my finger on it but he's missing something that would give him legend status...
